  1. Actually, walking IS a weight bearing exercise, especially if you carry the load uphill. You do not have to go into a gym and pump iron to achieve results. I think that whole issue has been overblown. Also, the younger you are, the more likely the problem will reverse with a strict gluten-free diet, along with supplements and a diet rich in calcium. That...
  2. That seems to be the million dollar question! I am not convinced that once you go gluten-free, EVERYTHING returns to normal. I also show a high protein count in my blood work, which can be an indicator of blood cancer. Off to the hematologist I go, who was one the BEST doctors I have ever had the pleasure to meet, and after some more "in-depth" testing, notably...
  3. I thank you for your words and honesty on this! My sister's daughter has been told she most likely has lupus so that little voice that maybe I have it too is always there. I am convinced she also has celiac disease from her symptoms over her short life but, so far, she doesn't want to hear that right now and her doctor's think I am wrong. Eh, what do they...
  4. Well....this gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling all over! I also have celiac disease, Sjogren's, Hashi's and Reynaud's, plus have a sky high ANA and Rheumatoid factor but have not seen a Rheumatologist. Considering my history, I feel pretty good right now and have no active symptoms of anything else so am not going to go to any more doctors for awhile...
  5. It can be very easy to get in a rut with food, especially if you work for a living and don't have much time to play Betty Crocker! I am lucky that I crave no gluten containing anything and my recovery, plus these events with my thyroid have re-inforced, like yourself, the rewards of being compliant. When a person becomes life-threateningly ill, it's amazing...
  6. I forgot to add that, although Lucy's doesn't specifically advertise gluten-free menu's on their website, she teaches a course in her cooking school on gluten free baking and will accommodate Celiacs at her restaurant. If she teaches a course, she'll get the food right!
  7. Nicole......I have been to the Lakes District to hike and if you have never been there, you will fall in love with the place! I would like to retire there but not sure how possible that would be. As far as gluten-free places to stay, I found one I have been perusing for a future trip and here is the link: Open Original Shared Link. It looks pretty...
  8. Roda......what you are describing is happening to me right now. I have been gluten-free for 4 years in April and was on 150 mcg. of Levoxyl, plus 2 mcg of a compounded T3. All that ever happened was an increase in dosages. About 6 months ago, I started to have symptoms of hyper-thyroid and my doctor cut out the T3. Everything calmed down and I went...
  9. What you describe is classic for Hashimoto's thyroid disease. I also have Hashi's and I can feel my thyroid gland when I swallow......it's exactly as you describe, a feeling like there is something in your throat. Most everyone with this disease has an enlarged thyroid so I wouldn't worry about it too much. As long as you are getting good medical treatment...
  10. If you tested positive on your EMA, which is 100% specific to Celiac Disease, and have a positive tTg, the numbers given by the AMA are 99% positive for Celiac Disease, with these 2 results. I tested positive on these 2....I had full blown Celiac. Don't doubt yourself.....you have celiac disease. Biopsy not needed! Good luck with your diet, you'll have better...
  11. Absolutely! If you go gluten-free before testing, it will skew the results. It's Easter and if I were you, I would do what I did......go and gorge yourself on Hot Cross Buns! I was deathly ill from eating them at Easter 4 years ago but I got my diagnosis! Keep eating gluten until you have your blood work done. I want to emphasize to you that if your...
  12. Yup....I did forget something important! All of those meds you currently take have to be checked for gluten-free status. Call the manufacturer and ask or ask your pharmacist to check for you. Even if you follow a gluten-free diet religiously but forget to check meds, you'll still have symptoms!
  13. Jenn.....I hear your pain! It can be SO frustrating trying to obtain a diagnosis for this. It took me 20 years of active symptoms and one trip to the emergency room after passing out in a restaurant one night because I was so run down, and STILL I had to press for testing for Celiac. Let me try and give you a few pointers on what to do the first month......

    ARCHIVED Exciting!

You are too funny! I am lucky that I live in the state where WF started and I have access to quite a few so I know your joy. Just don't go overboard on their treats or you'll gain weight but it sure is nice to be able to just buy some cupcakes when you want them. I have to admit when I find a new gluten-free product that looks really good, I get as excited...
  15. Nicole....were you diagnosed using blood work? If so, you can easily find out if you are ingesting gluten on a regular basis as it will show in your repeat blood testing. I eat out from time to time and have had absolutely zero problems with it. However, I am careful where I eat and frequent the same places so they know me and my needs. As far as being...
  16. I am not sure how much a proper diagnosis helps people stick to the diet. What I have noticed, time and again, is that it relates to how sick a person gets when they ingest something that makes them really sick. With most people, at some point, and never for some, when you get to the point where you have no quality of life, that can be the trigger to help...
  17. You will probably do just fine with henna, then, as you have no gray hair. That really is the crux of the issue because hair dyes and color do not behave the same on gray vs. non-gray hair. Hair color today is much, much safer than it used to be. You have no need to worry about chemicals and potential health affects as the only color that was ever an...
  18. I have never heard of Frey wines myself and have never seen them around where I live. I also do not drink white wines, which are generally aged in oak barrels (not all, I agree) because I am allergic to oak and get a severe headache every time I drink one of those oakey wines. I know Chardonnay is and I can't go near the stuff. What is all boils down to...
  19. I will add my comments because I think it's important to hear a different opinion. I take thyroid meds every day of my life and have for a long, long time. I was end stage Celiac....if that's your definition of super sensitive. I have never, ever had a problem with my thyroid hormone and my blood work is so good, there is no way I am ingesting any gluten...
  20. I don't know what the requirements are in Canada but here in the States you have to reach 7 1/2% of your adjusted gross income before you can even begin to deduct for medical expenses of any kind. That's a ton of gluten-free food!
  21. I have used Framesi hair color for years and have never had one issue with it. It's an Italian hair color product, used with peroxide, and it's the best color I have ever used. It can only be done in a salon, though, because it's professional color......you need a beautician's license to buy it. There is a big difference between dyes used without peroxide...
  22. Tica......there are many choices in and around the Boston area for gluten-free dining but I would warn you not to feed your daughter at any food court. CC and the fact the vast majority of the food is gluten loaded and the employee's tend to be people who don't have a clue. At the Burlington Mall, there is a Legal Seafoods, which has an amazing gluten-free...
  23. Actually, wines are completely gluten-free. As an avid wine-only drinker, I went to a number of local vineyards and investigated their gluten-free status. Not a one of them use anything remotely connected to gluten. The only remark that was made concerning this was that maybe, just maybe, companies that mass produce cheap wines MAY use a process that most...
  24. Anthony.....the hardest thing a person can be today is patient. Most societies are impatient and want instant gratification, especially when illness is the issue. From my personal experience, the moment I committed to the gluten-free lifestyle, I never looked back. I was end stage, near to a feeding tube kind of Celiac and I NEVER want to be that sick again...
  25. There are many cosmetics and perfumes that do not contain any gluten products or by-products. They tend to be the expensive ones, though, the ones the majority of people do not buy. You also cannot be glutened by being in the same vicinity as gluten. You sound like you have extreme allergies, along with Celiac, and that is entirely possible. Touching and...
