  1. My best wishes to you for a quick and speedy recovery! Personally, I would be sweating the no solid food for 2 days before, more than I would the surgery! As if you won't be weak enough, they starve you for 2 days beforehand! The closest I have come to abdominal surgery was having my appendix removed. It was no picnic but not horrible either. Just...
  2. I have never had a reflux problem so am not sure about dosage. You may want to start off small, like a teaspoonful. I don't think I would take anymore than a tablespoonful....if that doesn't help, I don't think downing half a bottle of vinegar would help any better! I hope this works for you...I know how frustrating it is when you keep trying things and not...
  3. Don't worry so much about it. If you meet someone who really likes you and cares for you, it won't matter to them and you will work out the small details as easily as someone who doesn't have Celiac. It's just food and not that difficult to manuever around. I am married and my husband didn't even bat an eyelash about the whole thing. He actually does better...
  4. The only vinegar that a Celiac cannot have is malt vinegar. Distilled vinegar is definitely NOT a problem, except if it contains malt. Eating in Europe and Mexico can be much easier than here in the States....they don't eat the processed foods that Americans do, or at least very little of it. Plus, Mexico uses a lot of corn so that should make things...
  5. My goodness, Lady, you have had more than your share of problems! I hope you are doing better and am so sorry you have had to suffer all of these health problems. Hernia's are definitely a problem and probably a contributing factor to the reflux. However, the poster who wisely made the suggestion of using apple cider vinegar gave an alternative to what...
  6. Thank you for posting this as many people are confused about how you can be glutened. I find there is a lot of unnecessary fear. Even if there was gluten in the patch, the gluten molecule itself is too large to pass through the skin.....which would explain the importance of formulating meds so they CAN be absorbed into the skin. Even if any gluten that may...
  7. Although I did not attend the gluten-free Summit, I have been to many of the restaurants you have mentioned here as I live in Massachusetts and I dine out with a dining group from R.I. You are correct, these places are excellent and well worth a visit. It's a really good place to live, as far as being gluten-free!
  8. I use the non-bleached, brown coffee filters and have not had any problems whatsoever. As this is a non-food item, I would be highly surprised if there would be any gluten in a coffee filter. You also may be sensitive to something else in your daily diet. Very frustrating as it can take a while to figure it all out. Good luck!
  9. If your lymph nodes swell, it could also be that you have Sjogren's Syndrome. Swollen lymph glands are common with Sjogren's and Sjogren's is common with Celiac. It's not so normal for lymph glands to swell up just from canker sores alone so you may want to keep that in mind. There is a blood test for Sjogren's, in case you are interested in getting tested...
  10. Many people do have enough stomach acid to digest proteins completely but for those with Celiac who also may have pancreatic insufficiency, along with the aging process, many have problems with acid reflux. I am not talking about old, old either.....most people after age 40 start to have a decrease in many things. It's all part of the aging process. I...
  11. I used to get mouth sores and sore spots on my tongue when I didn't know it was Celiac Disease I was suffering from. Once I was diagnosed and went gluten-free, they are no longer a problem. It may not be common for many Celiacs but it is a symptom. I should also add I have Sjogren's and the resultant dry mouth so that could have added to the problem. I wouldn...
  12. This is why doctors so often fail their patients! If a person has acid reflux, unless a doctor does tests to prove you have excess acid, you most likely do not. As we age, and because of food issues, many people have REDUCED stomach acid. When this happens, you cannot digest your food properly and acid reflux results. It's undigested food that is going nowhere...
  13. Candy.......in order to develop Celiac Disease, you HAVE to have the genetic predisposition (of which I am convinced the medical community is not really good at yet, as far as discovering the genes related to it), have to trigger and have to be eating gluten in your diet. Obviously, you cannot develop a disease related to wheat, barley and rye if you are...
  14. I am glad you posted this because many people get confused about an internal gluten reaction vs. a contact allergy. Gluten containing shampoo's will only cause an internal reaction if you drink the shampoo. If a person is having a topical reaction to shampoo, they are allergic to something in the shampoo and it may not just be wheat. It's a contact allergy...
  15. I used to love Godiva chocolates pre-diagnosis. As they were very expensive, I was shocked to learn their chocolates may contain gluten and they didn't seem to care that was a problem. I sent them a letter indicating my displeasure and remarked that considering they were so pricey, they ought to be more aware of allergens and the millions of people who have...
  16. Being on the North American diet alone will not trigger celiac disease for anyone...you have to have the genetic predisposition. Plus, may Asian cultures do eat a lot of wheat in noodles and soy sauces. My guess would be that this person may have the genetic link from someone in their background and the doctor should do gene testing to rule it out. You are...
  17. It only took 3 days for my blood work to come back but my doctor rushed it because I was so sick. Different labs have different processing times but you should definitely have had results by now, especially since you have contacted them. I am afraid, though, that the one test they did is not going to be enough. A FULL Celiac panel needs to be done because...
  18. That is the biggest problem for a Celiac.....family denial. If you all could see my parents and siblings and how some of them look like text book Celiacs plus all the autoimmune problems related to celiac disease, it would make your head spin. I think they all have it, to some degree. My mother behaves like I am accusing her of passing on a disgusting disease...
  19. Nice to hear! I hate buying anything without asking first if other's have tried it and what their opinion is because of the expense of these products. Although.....I buy organic milk now and that isn't exactly cheap!
  20. Thanks, Susan! These 2 have been written down and I will try both. I thought it might be harder to dump the dairy, and I am not sure if I can tolerate small amounts, but lately, I have been having problems that point to a dairy issue. I know it's allergy season but when you wake up in the middle of the night coughing because of all the junk in your throat...
  21. Now that's an interesting combination! I admit I love the taste of butter but if I found something that was good, I could easily give the butter up....just like I did with gluten. Would this be usable in baking also? Does the texture come out good in baked goods, using this as a substitute? It's funny but most people have no idea about the uses of coconut...
  22. I was diagnosed via blood work only....the endo was not needed. I have had repeat testing to ensure that no gluten is getting in but I only did that to shut the doctor up. I went from being end stage Celiac and extremely ill to resolution of all symptoms and a much needed, 15 pound weight gain. As far as I'm concerned, that, along with my blood work, was...
  23. Could you please elaborate on what non-dairy butter you use? I am having allergy issues with congestion and think I would like to do a trial dairy free diet, on top of the gluten-free one. I have not eliminated dairy up to this point so have no idea what good substitutes are out there. Good luck with your daughter! I am sure she will find good substitutes...
