  1. I would agree that the immune system is weakened pre-diagnosis but weak is different from suppressed. Suppression comes from diseases like AIDS and Celiac immune function, or lack of, is a totally different animal. I also think the weakened state comes from mal-absorpton and not so much from it's hyperactive state. A Celiac will always show hyperactivity...
  2. The immune system of a Celiac is not suppressed....it actually hyperactive. So, it should not have anything to do with being sick, as you have described. However, if you are still ingesting gluten, whether on purpose or not, you will have malabsorption issues still and that could be what is running you down. Or it could be that you are just one of those people...

    ARCHIVED Idiot!

I don't agree with the statement that it is an inconvenience to accommodate a Celiac. A restaurant is in the business of accommodating people who eat food and it is not that difficult to prepare a gluten-free meal anywhere. I guess I am lucky that I live in an area that, for the most part, does not have such a bad attitude towards it's customers. In fact...
  4. Moldlady....I wanted to respond to some of your advice given here....not that your advice isn't good because some of it is very insightful and worth reading. However, as far as acquiring Celiac, you either have the predisposition for it or you don't and you have to trigger. I don't believe anyone can trigger for Celiac just by ingesting heavy metals. Having...
  5. I have Sjogren's and was diagnosed via blood work and symptoms. I actually figured it out and asked my PCP for testing. A few facts about Sjogren's.....I have done a lot of research on it so my information is current. One of the biggest symptoms of it, which is recognized by the medical profession and is generally included in the questioning, is whether...
  6. I don't always agree with you, Ursa, but thank you for responding to this post by Ali. The problem with MY thyroid was not caused by malabsorption, it was caused by my immune system attacking it because of the underlying inflammation from gluten. Autoimmune disease, pure and simple. I, too, will have to take Levoxyl for the rest of my life, unless I become...

    ARCHIVED Hypotyroidism?

Your son is, indeed, well on his way to being hypothyroid. Besides, going by the TSH score alone is very bad thyroid management, especially if the problem is autoimmune. A full thyroid panel should be done, checking T3 and T4 levels, along with antibody levels. I can get the information for you, if you need it. Because I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the...
  8. Yes, I have been seeing eye drs for a long time. Now those eye drs are really a lost group. I don't think they could identify a lady bug if they saw one land on a bug encyclopedia!!!!! However, I got one this time, that actually knew his stuff. He has actually ordered Restasis for me. It took me a year after I had asked for it to get to this point...
  9. I would have to agree with you. If you have had excellent results with the diet and are having no problems, any invasive procedure would be not necessary. I certainly would not have them done unless I were having a problem that made it medically necessary. They are the test du jour today though, and doctors push them.
  10. hayley....There is no doctor on the planet that can suspect Celiac just by looking at your duodenum....villi blunting can only be seen using a microscopic exam after the biopsy is taken. I know of people who were told this and the doctor said he really didn't think they had it because everything looked fine and, lo and behold, positive biopsy. If you are...
  11. No, not at all! You can most definitely be a card carrying Celiac AND notice amazing, fast improvement because I did. At diagnosis, I weighed 98 pounds and was losing 1 pound per day. I had deficiencies, was anemic and could not leave the house as I was so sick. After I had the blood drawn for the test, I immediately went gluten-free because I KNEW it was...
  12. A high Ttg is indicative of other autoimmune diseases also. Hashimoto's thyroid will cause elevated Ttg so it could be that you have another problem, undetected, that is causing these numbers.
  13. With an elevated Ttg at such a young age, this is evidence of intestinal damage. However, the number is still on the low side so damage has probably just started. Your child most definitely has Celiac so the decision to do a biopsy would really be for your peace of mind. The biopsy could still come up negative, though, if damage is very patchy and they don...
  14. Scotland is an easy country to visit if you have Celiac. It's common there and you do not necessarily have to find official gluten-free restaurants with menu's to eat well. Every time I ordered a meal, I generally got steamed vegetables to go with it. They were good too. Lots of potatoes, more so than rice, and they are big on game and meat, chicken and...
  15. Your rheumatologist had it right from the start....if you tested positive via blood work for celiac disease then an endoscopy is not necessary to confirm Celiac. The endoscopy may be warranted if there are other problems, like symptoms of bleeding, that need to be checked out but the GI doctor is dead wrong that you need an endo to "confirm" celiac disease...
  16. You might want to re-check the Passion Fruit Lemonade drink at Starbuck's....I don't think the tea part is gluten-free. Herbal tea's can be a problem because of the flavoings they use in them. I know many are not gluten-free. The only drinks at Starbuck's that are gluten-free are the Chai tea latte's and the straight coffee drinks like the latte's, with...
  17. What a nice, positive post! Good for you and I agree with your outlook. I experienced the same types of changes after going gluten-free in that, for the first time in my life, I filled out because I was finally absorbing. No more skinny arms and I felt better and better with each passing day. I had also cut out many foods before I knew it was the gluten...
  18. Do any of you get your blood work done on a regular basis? I do and, as I've said before, my numbers are close to zero. That is definitive, clinical proof that I am not ingesting gluten. Every single symptom that I had before I was diagnosed, and I had every single one listed for celiac disease, is gone and has never returned. I have had some medical trianing...
  19. That's perfectly fine, if that's what makes you comfortable. I just think that newbies to the lifestyle should be told medical fact as to how they could become glutened or CC'd. That way, they will not make mistakes or make living gluten-free more difficult. It seems to me from reading these posts that some have a really difficult time, more than they need...
  20. I certainly understand everyone's concern and everyone has the right to choose their gluten-free lifestyle but I would add that you cannot have a gluten reaction in your GI tract by putting something on your skin, unless you ingest it. Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin....the molecule is too large. That's medical fact. It's a disservice to the newly...

  23. This choice is a personal one and will be different depending upon each situation. I don't have DH and, except for lipstick or lip balm, none of my personal care products are gluten-free that I know of. I don't eat my make-up or shampoo and practice good hygiene to prevent CC. I can't remember the last time I was glutened and to prove compliance, I have...
  24. Good advice! I recently had blood work done and my ANA and Rheumatoid Factor came back very high. As I have absolutely no symptoms of either disease, I am not worried about it. I saw a hematologist a few months back because my gamma globulin/protein levels are elevated. I was lucky in that the doctor I chose seemed to be extremely knowledgeable about autoimmune...
