ARCHIVED Should I Only Eat Products Labeled gluten-free?
Gemini replied to LoriG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Don't get hung up on whether or not a product is labeled gluten-free or not. While that certainly makes things easier, all you need to do to remain gluten-free/CF successfully is learn your ingredients well and check labels on the things you eat. I only have called manufacturers two or three times in 3 years to verify gluten-free status because of questionable... -
My PCP is covered under my insurance but because she's in an HMO, the testing they perform is all mainstream and sometimes not very helpful. My alternative med doctor is mostly out of pocket, except for some testing, which my insurance reimburses me for. No funky tests though are covered.....just routine stuff. The mainstream medical profession is way behind...

I started going to an alternative medical doctor about 20 years ago for my "stomach" issues and other problems because I was getting nowhere with mainstream medicine. These are the people who eventually told me my problems were in my head because they could not find them. My "good' doctor" is an MD but prefers to treat via natural methods and does less...

The fact that you are waking at 2:00 am and have trouble going back to sleep is classic peri-menopause and menopause related hormone issues. At 44 years of age, you are right on target with this. I would wake up at 3:00 am and have the same trouble getting to sleep afterwards. It got really bad the year prior to diagnosis of my celiac disease but I was...

I agree with Ursa.....there is a good article in one of the gluten-free mags I read about all the perceived places you can become glutened from. From keeping track of things myself, I would agree with the article which states that it is so very rare to find gluten in spices, that if you think you have been glutened, it most likely will not come from the spices...

What an excellent post and the information given is spot on! Like your daughter, I have celiac disease and Hashimoto's (from undetected celiac disease) and I recently had my ANA and Rheumatoid Factor come back very high. After discussing this with more than one physician and doing some of my own research, I have learned that these 2 tests are very general...

I did the gene testing after being diagnosed with celiac disease through bloodwork. I presented with classic Celiac. The results were that I have a double DQ2, which means mother and father possess at least one each.....not surprising as they are Irish/ English. I have 3 other siblings and they all have autoimmune diseases linked to celiac disease and...

ARCHIVED Raynaud's Phenomenon
Gemini replied to Joyous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, everyone has the right to disagree but I can most certainly tell you that once you trigger for an autoimmune disease, it does not go away. You only trigger once, pretty much, to turn it on. You cannot rid yourself of celiac disease by eliminating gluten but you can become totally asymptomatic if the diet is followed strictly and you have no other food... -
ARCHIVED Reversing Osteoporosis Without Fosamax
Gemini replied to frec's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The reason that osteoporosis increases dramatically after menopause is the lack of hormones a women now has. Hormones play a role in healthy bone formation. This can be offset with the use of bioidentical hormones that are compounded from plant sources. The Vitamin D issue is also important and I've found you can take quite a large dose when trying to... -
ARCHIVED My Husband Just Doesn't Understand
Gemini replied to kali-mist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What an excellent post! I think you are spot on with the way you feel on this and I cannot understand why some would choose the "be nice and understanding" approach. I know I would be BS if my husband treated me this way and never would put up with the attitude when it's my health and well being at stake. I have been extremely lucky in that my husband... -
ARCHIVED My Husband Just Doesn't Understand
Gemini replied to kali-mist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What you need to do is to take control because you're the one who HAS to! Don't feel guilty for giving them tough love but both your husband and roommate need an attitude adjustment, pronto. Why are you feeling guilty over the thought of banning gluten from the house? Considering it's poison to your system, there should be no guilt on your part. I would outline... -
ARCHIVED Reversing Osteoporosis Without Fosamax
Gemini replied to frec's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Edit: Animal protein is not "pretty much unavoidable" if one is celiac or gluten intolerant. When I cut out gluten, I didn't have to change my diet that much. I merely had to sub in with nongluten grains. There are plenty of us out there than manage quite well. I have more recipes than I can ever hope to try. If you want to eat animal protein, fine... -
ARCHIVED Wow, My Husband Is Gluten Intolerant Too!
Gemini replied to Glutenfreefamily's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I seem to have the same situation as yourself. I was diagnosed in April of 2005 and have been gluten-free ever since. My husband eats gluten-free at home by default but his lunches and food away from home may contain gluten. I started to notice that he seemed to have stomach issues like gassiness and burping after having a gluteny meal. No constipation or... -
ARCHIVED Reversing Osteoporosis Without Fosamax
Gemini replied to frec's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've heard of all this before but not so sure how much it really affects bone loss. Most Americans eat tons of meat and drink alcohol and I doubt everyone has soft bones. I think moderation is the key and a good diet is probably the best defense, along with all the other things frec mentioned. I drink some wine and coffee and eat animal protein, which... -
I'm a female with Sjogren's and you get diagnosed through a blood test that looks for elevated antibodies. I believe it's called SS-A and SS-B. I knew I had it before the doctor did the blood work because of my symptoms. These include: extreme dry eye and mouth, inability to swallow gluten-free bread without drinking water to wash it down....you can literally...

ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
Gemini replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
And on the different note, I thought that Sjogrens was a "drying" disease? I did not know that it had anything to do with light. Interesting. Wouldn't the initial symptoms be dry skin, dry hair, dry nailbeds, things of this nature? Just wondering. Thanks for the info! -

That statement is not quite true.....the big pharmaceutical companies have long promoted many drugs that, after a short time, were pulled from the market for life threatening side effects. We are constantly barraged on TV with these ridiculous ads and many of these drugs are not safe for many people. The FDA sometimes pushes through a drug quickly with bad... -
ARCHIVED Parties, Gatherings, And Informal Events
Gemini replied to amande01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You've brought up a very good point about socializing that irks me also and it's the real reason I sometimes skip out on these gatherings. I have noticed that it really bothers many people when someone at a party does not stuff their face with food like everyone else. It's almost like they are threatened on some level by someone who has control over their... -
ARCHIVED School Trip To England And Scotland
Gemini replied to HAK1031's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I have been to both countries many times and have never had a problem eating out at all. Use common sense at mealtimes and talk to the servers where you eat....they know Celiac much better than Americans do. You'll find that at most English meals, they usually serve potatoes and veggies like cauliflower, carrots and broccoli in abundance and you could always... -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
Gemini replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oh, I understand that aspect alright and know what you mean about a sorepoint! I went 20 years with active symptoms so I sometimes wonder if I might fall apart as I age. However, I am totally asymptomatic of anything right now and am managing things well. I can only hope that this lasts by being very strict about the diet. I consider myself very lucky... -
ARCHIVED Why Endoscopy If Blood Tests Show Celiacs?
Gemini replied to gfny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was in the same boat as yourself....I failed 4 out of 5 of the blood tests done and my numbers were ridiculously high. I may have considered an endoscopy but at that point, I was so sick I was losing a pound per day and the stupid doctors needed "time" to set up an endoscopy! By the time they got around to it, I would have had to be hospitalized from dehydration... -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
Gemini replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
A gluten free diet can help reduce symptoms and make it possible to manage autoimmune problems well BUT once an autoimmune problem develops, you cannot cure the problem or make it go away completely. Once the immune system has found something else to attack, the goal is to calm the reaction down by strict gluten-free diet and maybe some meds to help with... -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
Gemini replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It's just this attitude that kept me from a diagnosis for over 20 years. Now I have a host of autoimmune problems that are a direct result of gluten poisoning for years. Honestly, sometimes I feel like suing the medical profession for sheer ignorance on the subject. Restasis costs 125.00 per month but with insurance, I pay 25.00 per month. It is important... -
ARCHIVED Sick Just From The Smell Of Gluten?
Gemini replied to XxKittykat's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Same here and what really ticks me off is that many non-Celiac's think I am making it up. My very understanding husband has yo toast his bread in a room off the kitchen, with a door I can close and a window to open to get rid of the smell. I don't get physically sick but nauseated and, if bad enough, my intestines will ache like a toothache for a couple...
