ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
Gemini replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Restasis may not work for simple dry eye....it's basically used to help with inflammation in the eye, which in turn shuts down tear production. My eyes were so inflamed from allergies and Sjogren's, my vision was impacted in a big way. The type of dry eye that occurs with aging may not be helped by Restasis but my theory is it doesn't hurt to try. I am... -
I must admit I have trouble believing this one! There is a genetic marker for people who grey early and it also can be caused by a shock to the system, like having a stroke. Thinning hair can be caused by a number of factors but once you get into your mid-40's and are gearing up for menopause, your hair will thin somewhat and you'll never have the hair of...

ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
Gemini replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I tried Systane for awhile, on the advice of my eye doctor, but stopped using it. I noticed it blurred my vision after use for a few minutes and did not like that effect. The reason it does that is because I believe it said they use glycerin or a like substance in the mix and I do not want that in my eye. It would explain the blurred vision effect....it's... -
ARCHIVED I Was Crying Like A Baby
Gemini replied to Kathy'sUnicorns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, I don't think you are nutty at all. I only had one moment recently in 2 1/2 years where I was momentarily sad about not being able to have a particular food but it passed very quickly because I decided to make my own, gluten-free. That always helps when you know there are many good recipes for the same things you cannot have in their gluten filled forms... -
ARCHIVED Light Sensitive Upon Waking
Gemini replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Again, this is another symptom and common problem for people with Sjogren's Syndrome. My eyes were so light sensitive pre-gluten-free that I had to wear my Rx sunglasses inside. They are still light sensitive but it has improved dramatically after going gluten-free and allowing my body to re-balance and heal. As I have stated before, you can never get rid... -
ARCHIVED Raynaud's Phenomenon
Gemini replied to Joyous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Reynaud's is autoimmune and it is also linked with Lupus. I believe it's termed a connective tissue disease also. I do have Reynaud's myself, among other autoimmune problems, and it is linked to celiac disease, which is not surprising. Auotimmune problems never go away....you cannot be "cured" but what you can do is experience a major lessening of symptoms... -
ARCHIVED The Extent Of This Is Mind-boggling ...
Gemini replied to Sailing Girl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Kate....I have an appointment with her on the day after Christmas and I will ask her the name of the physician who gave the talk. This is not mainstream medicine, obviously, because he wouldn't have been so knowledgeable about it. These are doctor's who have bucked the traditional route and have done their own research and actually listened to their patients... -
Five autoimmune diseases? Join the club! It's gotten to the point I feel like a candidate for the Guinness Book of World Records! In answer to your question, yes, you should be tested for Sjogren's as the symptoms can be managed quite well, if you know you have it. It's a blood test so it's easy. I would suggest a few things to help with the dry...

ARCHIVED Stiff Finger Joints Ever Since Gluten Free
Gemini replied to Valeria V's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome Valeria! Sorry to hear you are having these problems but be reassured that Celiacs the world over have trouble with doctors and their ability to figure out associated health issues. I think I can point you in the right direction though.....stiff finger joints could possibly be caused by Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is an associated autoimmune disease... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed & Frustrated With Conflicting Information
Gemini replied to Krickett's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Distillation will remove gluten from vodka......the gluten molecule is too large to survive the process. What we have to beware of is if any flavorings, which may not be gluten free, are added back in after the distillation process. I don't know the process by which wheat starch is supposedly made gluten free but if it isn't distillation or a similar... -
ARCHIVED The Extent Of This Is Mind-boggling ...
Gemini replied to Sailing Girl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My doctor went to a seminar in New Mexico this past year and one of the topics was Celiac and Thyroid Disease. The line was long trying to get into that lecture. The guest speaker/researcher estimates that mainstream medicine has it all wrong and, according to his research, he estimates that up to 75% of the American public has some degree of GS/celiac disease... -
I have been to London many times and the British are much more Celiac savvy than their American counterparts. There are many small restaurants and eating establishments in the city and I have never had a problem finding a good meal. The English also post their menu's around the entrance to restaurants so you can get a good idea of what they serve before going...

ARCHIVED Celiac And Lasik Surgery
Gemini replied to jennavive00's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Go with your gut instinct, which it sounds like you will. I, too, share a basic distrust of doctors due to prolonged diagnosis time, which resulted in additional related problems. If I ever get one more eye roll from a physician, I'll explode! I think the reason they get so annoyed is that I figured out my problems before they did and requested testing, which... -
If you are receiving allergy shots, there is no need to worry at all. Allergy shots are just concentrated forms of what you are allergic to so there should be no fillers or additives to them. I getting shots for 10 years now with no problems. Also, you have to ingest gluten through the GI tract to cause a reaction so unless you are swallowing anything...

ARCHIVED Celiac And Lasik Surgery
Gemini replied to jennavive00's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You should have the blood test for Sjogren's Syndrome, which is very common with Celiac Disease. It will cause dry eye and dry mouth because your autoimmune system attacks the salivery and lacrimal glands. A person can have some improvement after going gluten free but it never goes away and you will have ongoing problems from it. A good eye physician would... -
ARCHIVED Family Members And Testing
Gemini replied to lilypad23's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is a very common problem for many compliant Celiacs.....stubborn family members who refuse to believe they may have it also and think they will die if thy have to give up gluten. My own family all have symptoms and many autoimmune diseases amongst them but have gotten petty nasty at times when I tried to press the issue. So now I am patiently waiting... -
You are absolutely correct about the dental enamel problem and it's a direct result of having celiac disease. It's called hyperplasia and it causes ridges and defects and sometimes yellowing of the teeth. The yellowing can be from a total lack of enamel on the affected tooth. My 2 front bottom teeth came in without enamel on them and were that way until...

ARCHIVED Healed And Never Get Sick
Gemini replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have been gluten-free since April of 2005 and have had complete resolution of ALL Celiac symptoms. I have never felt better and I'm 48 years old. I think it was a combination of things that made my outcome so good, such as eating healthy before I was diagnosed. Little did I realize it was those 12 grain loaves of fresh bread from Whole Foods that were... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Overcome Bad Advice?
Gemini replied to sharps45's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh, I don't think it's unfair at all. I never said that all younger people are not disciplined, in fact, I never mentioned the word undisciplined. For younger people, food is a much larger social issue. It's younger people, especially unmarried younger people, that go out more often with their friends and significant others and most of their socializing revolves... -
I can't give you direct references but there are many Celiacs who are overweight. One theory is that for some, when you are not absorbing fats properly and other nutrients, your body goes into starvation mode and holds onto weight. For others, like myself, I lost weight and was underweight for most of my life....until diagnosis and healing occured. I have...

ARCHIVED How Do I Overcome Bad Advice?
Gemini replied to sharps45's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My nephew is 25 and I know he has celiac disease also. He always has stomach issues and loves his beer. He also has bad asthma and my family refuses to believe that their breathing problems are connected to gluten. So.....I convinced him to do an experiment, which was to go beer free for 2 weeks and then have one. He did it for me and when he raised the glass... -
Oprah was recently diagnosed with a low thyroid and the first thing I thought was whether her doctor did a thyroid antibody test along with the others to see if the cause was autoimmune. Someone ought to tip her off because Oprah may even have Celiac and that could explain her ongoing weight problem. Maybe she doesn't want to do a Celiac oriented show because...

ARCHIVED Celiac Diet And High Cholestral
Gemini replied to kathya's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is one of the best posts I've read in a long time! Excellent information and so very true. Everyone jumps on statins if their cholesterol goes up and that is absolutely the last thing you want to do....unless your body is producing too much but exercise can combat that. Very few people actually have that problem also and most cases are caused by other... -
ARCHIVED False Serology Positive
Gemini replied to marklen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The most likely explanation is that the blood results are correct and you haven't sustained enough damage for the doctor to have found it or they didn't do a good job of getting enough samples when they did the endoscopy. If your Ttg is very high and also the IGA, try the diet and see what dietary response you get. You will most likely see relief and you... -
I would suggest making reservations at Rialto because I had the BEST EVER gluten-free meal there and you will not get sick. It's a high end place, with educated people working there and they know gluten inside out. The gluten-free menu is larger than most places and the chef, Jody Adams, is Julia Child caliber and truly gets it with regards to Celiac. It...
