  1. Artorius, Welcome! You are not alone in the 'absence of symptoms' issue. I came on board with exactly the same questions as you. My advice : read, research, read more and of course follow the gluten free diet!! I actually spend probably a bit too much time reading all the different experiences of others here, but I have learned much! For...
  2. Hello Beth and welcome! I came across your post and thought I could provide you with the link to the Canadian site for tax concessions. This will be my first year claiming my food as a medical expense. As far as I can tell, as long as you have a medical certificate from a medical professional stating your diagnosis and need for special diet, you should...
  3. Sara, I'm glad you are feeling better. It is definitely all about finding out what works for each of us for making ourselves feel better. Have you had your sugars tested? The whole reason I started eating like this is because I had some glucose tolerance tests done (5 hour and 8 hour ones) and it appears that my body is in a constant state of hypoglycemia...
  4. Sara, Sorry you are feeling icky. I'm with you on the brain fog....so very frustrating! I want to address the part of your post where you say that you usually wait until later in the day to eat. I used to do this because I also felt that eating made me feel more tired and confused. My days start at 4am and I would wait until getting home from work...
  5. Anteau, For me it was my vitamin deficiencies that led my reg. GP to consider celiacs. I have several needs for supplements. I take B12, iron, calcium with D and magnesium, C, E and folic acid. Also a multi at night. I use Jamieson (canadian brand I believe) which is free of wheat, gluten, yeast, starch, sugar and lactose. Are you working with a...
  6. Ok. I'm new. New to celiac disease, new to the forum, new to forums in general - never taken part in one before, so I apologise if my posting here is not proper forum etiquette, but I feel the need to contribute. I joined this site because after my dx, I was feeling really alone, sad, angry, confused, afraid (the myriad of emotions that can come with...
  7. Now that I am back to work, I notice more of the neuro symptoms. It almost seems like too much physical activity will cause my tingly/numb/weak sensations, but at the same time, too much 'rest' in between shifs brings it on as well. Is this strange? I don't know if these are all attributed to celiacs or not, but I have noticed some improvement on my B...
  8. Good to know. And good to read over again when feeling lost and frustrated, to help keep the hope that it WILL happen and that this is worth it! And thanks TCA for taking time to make that list....great thread.
  9. Agree with you on the gluten-free life with normal textured breads - it is where I seem to be struggling the most. If ever you do manage to replicate it....be sure to share it!! And then sell it to make your millions. If I had the resources I would experiment as well, but not possible at this time. And since any store bought loaves I have tried are...
  10. I agree with this for sure....this is why I keep it under wraps as well. I'm not someone who likes to draw attention to myself esp. to something that may come across as really 'different' to others. Also, like someone else said here, I am still trying to figure out all the ins and outs of this disease and learning to cope with it myself and this plays a...
  11. This is what helps me - do groceries with hubby or friend. Read ingredients out loud to each other. Laugh at each other for what the other cannot pronounce. Wonder about consumption of what cannot be pronounced. Then have some fun with the grocery store clerks when you catch them 'eyeing' you for being there for 4 hours.
  12. Yep! ..... And 5 days-post-cheat-with-best-burger.....still don't recommend it Ugh! Lesson learned!
  13. I just 'cheated' this past Saturday.....and am still paying the price! Why? So many ridiculous reasons that barely related to the food itself, and I've exhausted myself from trying to justify why (to my boyfriend as well as myself).....futile b/c there was no sane justification for it. I never had any 'reactions' to gluten prior to diagnosis...
  14. Another newbie and another Canadian (Guelph, ON). Glad to see there are quite a few of us here - helps esp. with finding info about stores, product brands that are different from our American friends'. I have already found a wealth of information and support offered within this forum, and see it as a valuable tool to helping me start the path to wellness...
  15. Evie, First of all, Happy Birthday !! Second, I want to say thank you. You wanted your post to help just one person....well it certainly helped me. Just last night, I had a wee emotional breakdown. I am newly diagnosed and I have been really struggling with coping with the changes I'm needing to make and feeling guilty for the toll it is...
