  1. There's an Outback Steak House in Elmhurst at 88-01 Queens Blvd, although their website says that they'll be closed on Thanksgiving Day. I supposed you could pick up something the day before and reheat it. If you're willing to ride on the subway for 30 minutes or so, there's a ton of great restaurants in Manhattan that accomodate the gluten free diet...
  2. I seem to recall someone on the group testing various products to confirm gluten levels. It might pay for someone to try that if they can tolerate the trouble and expense. I sometimes have a reaction to Chex myself, but my theory is that it's the BHT as opposed to gluten as I react negatively to many preservatives. Did anyone confirm if they actually...
  3. Sadly, Little Italy is mostly gone. There's only about one block left and as Andrew posted, the remaining places are basically tourist traps. You're much better off going to Bistango at 29th and 3rd where they're happy to accomodate gluten free. If you really want to check out Little Italy, then you should probably just go for drinks and maybe appetizers...
  4. I had this debate with my sister for a few years until she started cooking the stuffing separately. Frankly the turkey cooks faster and it's actually recommended from a food safety perspective anyway. It sounds like it's too late for this discussion for this year, but you should have that in advance next year. It's not really a big sacrifice to ask someone...
  5. I just wanted to add my two cents to this discussion. I frequently eat Rice Chex and sometimes don't feel all that well afterwards. My theory is that I'm actually reacting to the preservative BHT. I'm definitely sensitive to other preservitives (such as sulfies) and the concentration of BHT is very variable as it's added to the packaging, so it probably...
  6. I went to Lake George in late June for 2 nights and figured I'd post a follow-up regarding my meals. The rest of my family eats gluten, so I'm only mentioning what I had for the most part: We ate dinner at the Log Jam (Open Original Shared Link) on the first night and I had the "Natural" rib-eye steak with a big baked potato. The steak only has olive...
  7. That's great. Thanks! I figured steak was safe, but I'll still make sure to ask them not to put anything on it. Regards, Ted
  8. Out of curiousity, what did you get at the Log Jam that was gluten free? I imagine they could probably make a steak gluten-free without too much trouble. Regards, Ted
  9. I'm going there too in late June. Here are a few tips for you: S.J. Garcia's on Canada Street has several gluten free items. Sadly, I'm not a big fan of Mexican food. Heres's the link: Open Original Shared Link Several of the national chains with gluten free menus are also around: Pizzeria Uno in Queensbury (only a 10 minute drive away): Open...
  10. I use Glutenease on those rare occasions when I eat out at a non-GFRAP restaurant. Does it work? I don't really know honestly. I've been fortunate and haven't had a major reaction in a while, but it might just be luck. The only reason that I bothered to try it is that I use other Enzymedia digestive enzymes and they seem to help in general. Pros...
  11. I personally like the Bob's Red Mill gluten-free pancake mix, although it's a little bit of a pain to prepare as you have to use a blender. I used to eat the gluten-free mix made by Polly's Pancake Parlor in New Hampshire. That's really good, but I no longer trust that they're careful enough regarding cross contamination. (I don't think I had a bad reaction...
  12. Joan's Gluten Free Great Bakes makes the most realistic bagels in my opinion: Open Original Shared Link The only downside is that they take a long time to make. You have to bake them in the oven (or toaster oven) prior to toasting. The flavor and texture are excellent though. Regards, Ted L.
  13. I'm no expert on the area, but I do have friends who live in Richmond. Two options that are nearby are Outback and Carabbas's Italian Grill, both of which have gluten free menus and locations in Williamsburgh. You can get the exact details on location via their websites: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Hope you have a great trip...
  14. I also had a real problem with canker sores which has mostly gone away since going gluten free. I pretty much tried every product on the market to help with them. Here are some recommendations if you're still suffering: Canker Cover -- this is a patch that goes in your mouth and slowly dissolves in about 8 hours. I recommend using this only at night...
  15. Amy's makes several gluten free soups which you can buy at Whole Foods and a lot of regular groceries. You can see the details on their website: Open Original Shared Link Kettle Cuisine has a great frozen gluten free line as well. I love the Chicken noodle, which is really delicious! I've seen this at Whole Foods and at several health food stores:...
  16. You may have other food allergies/intolerences in addition to the Celiac which could be causing the problem. One thing you could try is an elimination diet starting out with only a few simple foods. There's a lot of information on elimination diets on the Internet. I'm personally sensitive to corn, soy, buckwheat, dairy, sugar (can only tolerate small...
  17. I work fairly long hours and my wife doesn't cook much so pretty much quick meals are all I eat during the week. Here are some staple foods for me: * Bell and Evans grilled chicken - This is already cooked and ready to defrost * Bell and Evans chicken burgers - I make these on the grill but are also fine when heated in an oven or toaster oven * Dr....
  18. I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and have been on Synthroid ever since. I initially felt a lot better, but then my health started declining again. After discovering that I had Celiac disease I started feeling better again on the gluten free diet, but have periodically struggled with fatigue and other symptoms. After trying to identify and eliminate other...
  19. Trix is no good unfortunately -- it contains wheat starch. I'd be extremely cautious about any cereals from Post, Kellogs or General Mills unless they specifically say gluten free (like Rice Chex). As for recommendations, Honey Rice Puffins is pretty good (the other flavors contain gluten) and I also like the granola from Enjoy Life foods. Regards...
  20. I just wanted to let everyone know that I had a very good experience with British Airways coming back from London Heathrow to New York JFK very recently. As a caveat, I was sitting in business class (Club World), which had very good service in general -- paid for by my employer of course I had ordered the gluten free meal via their website and didn...
  21. I've been enjoying Rice Chex without any issues and I'm sorry to hear that some people have been reacting badly to them. One possibility that I haven't seen mentioned is that people are having a reaction to the preservative BHT. Most gluten free and "healthy" products don't contain chemical perservatives so most celiacs wouldn't consume them too often....

    ARCHIVED Burger King?

I used to get their low-carb whopper and never had a problem. That's basically just a whopper burger without a bun in a bowl with lettuce and tomato (or whatever toppings you want). They don't officially have that on the menu any longer, but they can easily make it for you. I haven't had it in a while as I'm now on a low saturated fat diet so I'm avoiding...
  23. Cafe Formaggio does have gluten free pasta listed on their menu so maybe that's where the confusion originated from: Open Original Shared Link I haven't tried them yet, but my wife and I plan on going when we get a chance. Regards, Ted
