ARCHIVED gluten-free Restaurants In Boston
Char replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
In Brookline, there's Fireplace (there's duck hash for brunch -- absolutely divine). It's a bit pricey, though. Also, there's a Wagamama's in Quincy Market, though you might want to double-check everything -- I've eaten there maybe a half dozen times, but was glutened once. And another place not mentioned is there's a japanese restaurant right next... -
I don't really go to Americanized Chinese restaurants, so this might not be true across the board, but (relatively) authentic chinese places make everything to order. I've found that hu fun (or chow fun) (broad rice noodle), mei fun (thin rice noodle), and a lot of seafood dishes with "lobster sauce" or other white sauce should be fine (they usually use...

Douzo, a Japanese restaurant by Back Bay station in Boston, has started carrying gluten-free soy sauce in their fridge because one of their regulars has a gluten allergy. I wrote a note to them trying to persuade them to use that soy sauce in some of their other allergies -- and hoping that it might be the case. So if you're in Boston, and want to try some...

Thanks, everyone! I'll have to contact the place where I got the chocolate cake to let them know of the problems.

It was at Finale, a Boston dessert place. I have eaten things that are cross-contaminated (meaning I've had gluten-free bread from a regular bakery), but I've never had that kind of reaction. It's good to know, though, that some people have this reaction. Thank you!

I've been eating gluten-free for two years. Tonight I went out for dessert. Within about half an hour, I felt really sick, and my stomach swelled up as it usually does when I get glutened, but within about an hour of having eaten the (supposedly gluten-free flourless chocolate cake), I was violently throwing up. After a few times, I felt tons better. ...

ARCHIVED Boston And Baltimore Rest. Search Help
Char replied to gracey1037's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
There is one near government center (102 Water St, Boston, MA) (and that one was the one that had the gluten-free menu), but there are a whole bunch over the city. (you can use google maps to find them) -

Elephant Walk is French-Cambodian, not Indian; there are a few dishes they can make gluten-free that aren't ordinarily so, and those require you to call 24 hours in advance, but if you just walk in, you can also get their gluten-free menu and order most of the dishes on it. There are two restaurants, one in Brookline and one in Cambridge. Fireplace in... -
This might not help you much now, but I just discovered that Fireplace in Brookline (get there from the green C-line) can do gluten-free brunch -- including duck hash! They have a full-on gluten-free menu for dinner, but for the brunch, we called in advance and they called the head chef just to double check.

The B&B we stayed at (which is a bit quirky but nice -- the owners like things very precisely, and it's a bit like staying with a friend's parents or grandparents) was able to make fabulous breakfasts that were gluten-free, and even let us pre-order a gluten-free cake! I would suggest contacting them way in advance, when you make your reservation, but...

Hi guys, Just wanted to say that I found another restaurant with a gluten-free menu (just ask at the door): Wagamama in Boston. It's a UK chain, so there may be some elsewhere as well. They do asian noodles and soups, and the Wagamama I went to is in Quincy Market/Fanueil Hall. -Char

I'm Chinese and speak Chinese, so I actually never have a problem at restaurants. If you can take a friend who can speak the language, I would highly suggest it -- most authentic Chinese places (meaning not the westernized-all-they-do-is-takeout) will cook anything with any of the ingredients they have on hand, as long as you can specify exactly what you...

ARCHIVED Maggiano's Restaurant In Phila... Boo... Hiss
Char replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'm completely confused why the person answering the phone would say that. The Maggiano's in Philly is great -- I've been there twice, and both times, I just tell the hostess when I'm seated that I'm allergic to gluten, and one of the chefs comes out and talks with me about what it is that I want, and makes sure that the modifications they make are ok (they... -
ARCHIVED Travel/language Cards?
Char replied to munchkinette's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
What I've done if I'm going abroad is google that country's celiac society website. (Google's translation program is pretty good, if you need language help) Then I send an e-mail to that group (in English) detailing where I'm planning to visit. So far I've been lucky that the people on the other hand speak a bit of English, and they usually just e-mail... -
Thanks, NWLAX36Mom! I called the store, and they say that they have a lot of gluten-free options.

Hi all, I'm going to Acadia National Park in about a month (staying in Bar Harbor), and was hoping that someone might have some tips of where to go for gluten-free food, either delis etc that would be willing to use gluten-free bread for sandwiches, or restaurants. I've seen some of the posts about Bangor, ME, but I'm hoping that there are some places that...

ARCHIVED Travelling Through Co, Nm, Az, Ut
Char replied to Swiss's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hi Swiss, I think that, in general, labeling in the US is still behind labeling in Europe -- although items do say "wheat", they don't necessarily list the other ingredients we're allergic to. In addition to Wild Oats, if you can find a Whole Foods (Open Original Shared Link) (this is a supermarket), they generally have a good collection of gluten-free... -
Dear all, While at my local grocery market, I stumbled upon a display of baked goods for passover from Schicks Bakery, almost all of which had a little "gluten-free" label in the corner. I totally pigged out -- assorted cookies, coffee cake, and sponge cake. Pricey, but really good -- the coffee cake is pretty good, and the cookies taste just like the...

ARCHIVED Another Chinese Restaurant W/ A gluten-free Menu!
Char replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Just wanted to say that I went to Gourmetland -- the gluten-free menu had about half a dozen items on it, and the food itself wasn't authentic (i.e. Americanized-Chinese food). But it was really nice to have something with soy sauce in a Chinese restaurant and know that it was safe! And the service was really great -- they seemed to be pretty informed about... -
I'm actually at Columbia, and often eat around here -- but I'm not as sensitive as other people are, so you might want to make sure that you raise a bit more of a fuss than I usually do. There are plenty of ethnic restaurants that are fine -- Indian restaurants (the best is Indus Valley, which is a bit of a walk from where you'll be staying, Broadway and...

Hi all, I just wanted to let you know about my trip. We stayed for two nights at the Shoshone Inn (Open Original Shared Link click on "Lodging"). Our room had two burners, a microwave, and a fridge, so we ended up cooking our dinners (and packing a lunch) - though note, we had to bring our own pots and dishes. It's pretty cheap, with the corresponding...

Thanks for your post, winki4. It's disappointing, but expected... so sorry about your experience!

Hi all, This is my first posting! I'm going to Death Valley National Park in a few weeks, and am very worried about the gluten-free situation there. Does anyone know of anything vaguely nearby that might serve gluten-free food? Thanks! -Char
