My advice would be to talk to the day care director. Perhaps get a letter or something from the doctor stating your child has celiac disease and ask the director to keep it in your child's file. Seeing a medical document may have some effect. If you explain the seriousness of celiac disease to the director ~ and compare it to an allergic reaction that someone would physically see like peanut/diary/etc ~ you may get some cooperation. The other kids in my little one's classroom that have allergies have poster size signs on the wall with their name and type of allergy. The posters are in the classroom and kitchen area. Trust me, your child is not the first one to attend that daycare center with an allergy. Tell them you insist your child's health is treated with the same respect as the other children.

I was diagnosed in Jan and have been gluten-free since. I too am now gaining weight and I am very upset about it. I am anxious to see the responses...

Why do we need to use gluten-free make-up? I understand lipstick. Please help, I'm still a newbie!

I agree with you. Appears they would love to have Celiac's purchase their products but are not dedicated enough to truly cater to us.

I have always known I was a little lactose intolerant even before the Celiac disgnosis. My doc says it is possible that intolerances differ. Taking Lactaid has never helped me. If I have milk on an empty stomach I suffer, for instance having a bowl of cereal for breakfast. But cheese, milk, etc. with meals throughout the day doesn't bother me.
Here is something strange, since going gluten free my lactose intolerance has gotten worse. My doc said it's only coincidence.

I have not visited PF Chang's since going gluten-free but I have visited Pei Wei numerous times. Both resturants are owned by the same people. I have never tried to order fried rice but I will say that the managers at Pei Wei are very knowledgable about gluten so I would assume the PF Chang's managers are trained as well. If you call the resturant and speak to the manager I am sure he'll be able to help you out. I have been to two locations in Houston and I have been very impressed each time. I have never gotten sick. I think I've just decided on what I'll be having for lunch today...

I understand EXACTLY how you feel. My scopes were done 3 days after Christmas so I stressed over the holidays. I have no tolerance for pain whatsoever! But honestly, and I am truly being honest with you, it is no big deal. You will get an IV and that is the only thing you'll feel. The medication to make you sleep is given through the IV. Before you are put to sleep they squirt your throat with a numbing spray. Next thing you know you are awake and done. Mine took 20 minutes total, and that was the endoscope and colonoscopy. You don't feel anything afterwards. Well, maybe you'll feel a little gas. The hardest part for me was the fasting, that sucks. And the day of the procedure I couldn't even drink anything and my mouth was so dry. I was given medication to help with the anxiety, maybe you could ask for that.
Anytime I have a procedure done (or papsmear) I buy myself something immediately afterwards. New jeans, charm for bracelet, new make-up, etc. That way I have something to look forward to.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but you cannot have any Godiva. Sorry! I have heard that See's are wonderful! (Hey, at least we can still have M&Ms. It would be inhuman to not be able to eat M&Ms).

That was funny. Now I'll probably giggle every time I watch House and hear lupus. (That would be a fun drinking game.) Friday night I watched a rerun of House on USA and the patients (mother and newborn) had celiac. It was very disturbing. Also strange because celiac was discussed on The View that same day. Until my diagnosis a month ago I had never heard of celiac and now it seems to surround me.

I am so excited! I LOVE cereal and I am so tired of eating the same stuff over and over. And I totally love cereal with marshmellows.

Thanks for posting the site! I love the way Rosie was taking it so serious. I sent the clip to everyone in my family so they'd see I'm not a hypochondriac.

I am happy that you have an answer. Even when a diagnosis is scary it is still better then the unknown.
I had a biopsy done last month that was "suggestive" of Celiac. I had blood work done last week and it all came back normal. So I am truly confused. I see my gastro next week so hopefully she'll shed some light. If I do have it, I want it to come back with flying colors. At this point I am almost hoping it is Celiac so that I don't have to go on wondering what the hell is wrong with me!
Good luck!

What is this "twenty parts per million gluten" crap?!?! A single fruit loop can send me straight to the porcelain throne for crying out loud! Gluten is gluten no matter what the size is, as far as my intestines are concerned.
-
I would definitely start with the bloodwork, but make sure you have the FULL Celiac panel run, not just the IgG and IgA (as many doctors only run).
Laura-
What are the other blood tests? I had a biospy done last month and it came back suggestive of celiac so I've been eating gluten free since then and my symptons have gotten better but not completely. I had blood work done last week (I ate gluten for 2 days leading up to the test) and today the nurse told me the results were normal. When I asked her what the name of the blood test were she said anti-glidin, ttg?, and anti-endoyosial? I am sure I am spelling these wrong. I don't know what to think about the results. Should I ask for any other tests?
Thanks

Thanks everyone. I have decided I'll send a letter to the owner expressing my disappointment in his employees...I'll mention the number of times we've attended their resturant in the past and mention that 2 years ago I used them to cater a party. They will miss me as a faithful customer. I'll also throw in Richard's "it's just good business" comment.
Hey Stef - I cannot believe they asked you to leave! I would have been devastated. I guess they are fortunate you didn't respond with your martial arts!!!
And I do love the irony of you living in Wheatfield.

I've only been gluten-free for about 3 weeks so a lot of this is very new to me. We normally go out to eat on Sundays after church with friends, kind of like a tradition. Yesterday we went to a BBQ place and I ordered a baked potato with chopped beef. Before they added the sauce I asked what the ingredients are because I have a serious food allergy. She refused to tell me! Apparently it is their "secret sauce". I told her I didn't want the recipe only to know the ingredients. She then asked me what ingredients I'm allergic to and then she would tell me if they were included. I was so irritated! Not that I thought I would actually be able to have the BBQ sauce but that's not the point. Do I have any rights here? I mean, food packages are forced to have their ingredients listed so is it different with resturants?

I have my own chili recipe that is absolutely awesome! I won a chili contest 3 years ago with it. As I am new to eating gluten free, I was researching all of my ingredients and am so happy to know that I can still eat my chili! I thought it would be nice to share the recipe. And just so you know, I have had people ask for years for this recipe and I refused to give it out. So yes, you should feel special!
1 to 2 pounds ground meat
1 chopped onion
1 chopped green bell pepper
1 can original Rotel
1 can stewed tomatoes (Hunt's is gluten-free) - can also get diced if you don't like the chunks
1 small can tomato paste (again, Hunt's is gluten-free)
1 can tomato sauce (...Hunt's)
chili seasoning
cummin seasoning
Brown ground meat with onion and bell pepper. Drain. Combine all ingredients and add seasonings to taste. Ready when onion and bell peppers are thoroughly cooked. Enjoy! We usually eat it with Frito's corn chips and shredded cheese (just be sure to shred your own cheese, packaged shredded cheese is usually dusted with flour to prevent sticking).
Let me know if any of you try it.

I am too irritated to say what I really think about your friend. I was just diagnosed this month and am currently working through explaining my new diet and the seriousness of it to my friends and family. While most are supportive (and usually have the look of "I am so glad it's you and not me") there are always those few who seem to know more then I do even though I am the one faced with this life changing situation. I guess this is just another celiac side effect...

My diarrhea happens within the hour. It is sudden and mine is not as painful as described by others. You know what is funny, a year ago I would never have discussed diarrhea with strangers and now my potty issues are an open book!

Thank you to everyone that has responded. I've been on this site so much lately and it has been wonderful. I had an endoscope done with a biopsy and that came back suggestive of Celiac. I have done bloodwork since and am going gluten-free...I meet with my gastro in 3 weeks for a follow up. Unfortunately, only two days after being gluten-free I had a normal "potty" which I am afraid confirms I need to stay off the gluten. I am depressed and feel like I'm in a prison. I get sad when I realize that one day I'll probably forget what Pappa John's pizza and Olive Garden breadsticks taste like. It's good to read entries from those of you that seem to be pros. I know I'll get there someday.

I was diagnosed by a gastro last week. I had never heard of Celiac and did not ask too many questions. Of course, now that I have done my homework, I am a total wreck. Should I get a second opinion? It is such a huge lifestyle change. Should I maybe have a different doctor review the labwork? Am I just desperate...?

My advice would be to call the nurse and discuss it with her. She'll probably discuss it with the doctor. Surely this is not an uncommon question. You would hate to keep him gluten-free if they want gluten in his system and then have to wait even longer for the testing.
Also, he does not have to be Celiac for a gluten free diet to be a positive thing. The gluten-free diet in itself is a test and if without gluten you know he's better then just do your best to keep him gluten-free. You may have to come up with a creative reason since he is a teenager and knows more then you do!
