  1. Hi, I am not trying to get pregnant, but I can tell you that my fertility has improved since going off gluten (I have an ovarian cyst and can feel my egg pop-- it hadn't ovulated in months!) In talking to a doctor about this, he said that fertility improves dramatically after a body is healthy enough to have a child. Most likely it wouldn't be wise to...
  2. Chicken is great to eat while you are healing, the only reason why I ate beef was it was cheaper and I was anemic. Also, homemade breads/baked goods are much easier on the system than store bought, so you most likely are just experiencing healing pains, not a reaction to your food. It will get better. As far as milk goes, I love dairy, but I found that...
  3. First of all, welcome to the board! Your stomach is healing, and that takes time. The only source of potential gluten I see would be in the deli meat, roast chicken, soup, and chips. Google the brandnames and "gluten" to find out. I felt better 5 days after going off gluten, and within 2 weeks all of my symptoms were gone (I was struggling with C). Remember...
  4. Hi, First of all, welcome to the board! I am not sure about rashes, so I'll allow someone else to answer it. As far as medicine goes, doctors can be wrong. Check your medications (easiest way is by googling the name of the medicine and gluten). Unless they are life or death, see if you can switch to a gluten free brand if necessary. With...

  6. I want to preface that my knowledge about this is very limited, it is what I got from a celiac podiatrist who is an alum of my college. Celiacs affects the fertility of both males and females. In males it reduces the mobility of the sperm so they won't be able to swim to the egg before they die. In females it weakens the egg so that it will not catch the...

    ARCHIVED Acne

For me, my breakouts were my first sign that something was wrong. I was one of those lucky teenagers who took horrible care of her skin and had one zit, at most. After the year from hell, I broke out like crazy in college. It was my first sign that something internally was wrong and that I had a toxin in me. After 3 years we connected it to celiacs. When...
  8. I know how annoying it can be, but you will find some AMAZING people out there who will make it worth all of the jerks. This week my boyfriend's parents changed over all of their gluten free staples like soy sauce and chicken broth to gluten free brands and cooked 3 dinners that I could eat! Yesterday I was invited to a dinner party with my bf's friends and...
  9. Hi, I have been gluten free since April and have convinced 2 doctors that I either have non-antibody producing Celiac (which runs in my family) or gluten intolerance and feel great!! This past week I have been feeling sluggish, gassy, fatigued, and bloated. I know I am not feeling gluten because I am not having C or brain fog, but I still feel yucky...
  10. Some other things that you might want to try are gluten-free pancakes with peanut butter and jam, rice and beans in a thermos, carrots/apples and peanut butter, salt potatoes, and tortilla lunchables (cut corn tortillas in quarters and slice up meat and cheese and put them in tupperware).
  11. The only way you can truly be safe is if you cook it yourself... and I know that isn't what you want to hear . After the group gets going for awhile and you know who to trust, then you might be able to talk to them about splitting the cooking. What we do for the get togethers that I hold is that everyone chips in $3 or $4 and I cook. It isn't the ideal...
  12. Does the army know you have Celiacs? Because as far as I know, it is an automatic discharge. From what I know about army food... good luck! Talk to the head of the mess hall and see what they can do. Good luck and stay safe!
  13. I don't like taking medicines unless it is a serious quality of life/life threatening condition (and I have had C get to that point!), so what my doctor told me to do is make sure I get over 100% of the USDA recommended dietary fiber with lots of water. I eat lots of beans, brown rice, veggies, and dried fruits and I am much more regular. Also, drinking a...
  14. My advice would be to take all of your kids off of gluten for the rest of the summer and have no gluten whatsoever in the house. Cook healthy gluten free meals (to save time cook a lot at once and then freeze it) See if all of your kids lose weight/feel better on the diet. A lot of people have neurological symptoms related to it (mine make me appear to be...

    ARCHIVED New Celiac

Hello, Welcome to the board! To answer your questions, yes you will feel much worse some days than others just because of how the human body works and the detox process. To make recovery easier, google every ingredient you use on this website to make sure that it is in fact gluten free, and not just hiding the gluten (ie Lays Potato Chips). Then, make...
  16. Thanks for the info. I go to a mega chain pharmacy and have found a less than helpful staff as well. In a period of 3 days I went in to get allergy medicine and explained that I couldn't take Benedryl and function and asked them if they knew if Claritin contained gluten. They looked at me like I had 3 heads (I know now that it doesn't). Then I went back to...
  17. If it starts to peel, put olive oil on it!
  18. I also completely understand about doing things on a tight budget. Like the others have stated, avoid the gluten free specialty products and stick with the basic, cheap staples. For breakfast I either make eggs in tortillas, eat store brand corn cereal (check the label!) with whatever fruit is on sale, or peanut butter and banana on rice cakes. For lunch...
  19. It depends on what terminal you are in. They do serve Seattle's Best, so you can get flavored coffee and there is a Wendy's. I'd pack what you can and hope that you don't get delayed!
  20. Sounds familiar.... My advice, call your doctor and ask for a blood test. If they say yes, get it right away and go completely gluten free, and keep a weekly log of how you are doing. If they say no, write down a list of all of your symptoms, go completely gluten free. Then, after 1-2 months on the diet (and being strict on it because it is the only way...
  21. I agree with Janely, get tested yourself and then consider going gluten free hardcore and seeing where you are 6 months from now. If there is no improvement, do a gluten challenge (yay for real pizza!!) and see if it is the gluten. Worst case is that you spent 6 months trying a diet unnecessarily, best case is your son feels so much better. My experience...
  22. I agree with those above: when you feel better, it gets easier. Trust me, I craved brownies, fried chicken, and most of all, pizza. The gluten-free versions are just not the same. Now that I have been gluten-free for about 2 months, I feel much better and the cravings go away. Focus on what you can have, not what you can't. For instance, I can't have...
  23. While in the UK, and other countries with socialized health care, a firm diagnosis is a must, in the US it is so flexible because you get no benefits from insurance either way and you are not taking any drugs whatsoever. Going gluten free will not hurt anyone. Most doctors will not diagnose you as a celiac without a positive blood test and/or biopsy....
  24. First of all-- congrats on feeling better! Don't worry about what the test results say, if gluten makes you sick, don't eat it. That is what my GI and my primary care physician told me when my blood results came back with 0 levels. If your physician is worth his or her weight in salt, they will say the same thing too. You may not be celiac, but instead by...
  25. Hi Kim, I completely understand how overwhelming eating gluten free can be on a small budget. My advice is to ignore all of the gluten free specialty items (especially breads, mixes, pastas, pretzels...), and eat naturally. Everyone will feel better that way. Rice pasta (either in the asian food section or with the spaghetti) tastes better than regular...
