ARCHIVED gluten-free Dandruff Shampoo
sarah ruth replied to mouth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
my 7 yr old boy had this, teachers would think it was lice before they looked closely. I read somewhere that it's often yeast-related. We have had good success clearing it up (still has a little, but much less and it's continually diminishing) with him eating spoonfuls of extra-virgin coconut oil and putting it on his skin and occasionally scalp after a... -
ARCHIVED How Did You Tell Your Kid They Were Celiac?
sarah ruth replied to Pacer's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ahhh... take a big breath... you WILL figure this out with him because it's such a positive thing to find out what's hindering health. Maybe have a little time out with him, sit and re-introduce gluten-free as such a positive change, and talk about the adventure of finding new treats to eat and cook, and ask for his help. The idea that if human beings... -
ARCHIVED This Sound Reasonable?
sarah ruth replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm with you in thinking there is something odd about excessive pickiness in kids, and haved wished my kids would just get on with it and eat up... but in the arena of picky kids, yours sounds about average. Follow your intuition when it comes to your son's health, of course, 'cause no one but him knows better, but it sounds completely reasonable to me... -

ARCHIVED Pro-biotics
sarah ruth replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
kefir lovers unite! I'm so thrilled to have discovered live fermented foods, they feel *vital*, SO much better than yucky probiotic pills. I started with a yogurmet home yogurt maker and made 24-48hr yogurt and it's SO delicious, so unlike even the best organic stuff I can get at the store, even confirmed dairy-barfers love it. Then I bought milk kefir... -
ARCHIVED Vitamins A Problem?
sarah ruth replied to CMCM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I say, if a supplement makes you feel or be sick, then it's not a supplement you should take, regardless of ingredients. Find a different way of getting those nutrients, always going in the directions of whole foods. Sometimes, yes, vitamins make me feel ill, sometimes oils in capsules are rancid, and sometimes the ingredients are too processed or in the... -
ARCHIVED Pro-biotics
sarah ruth replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I feel queasy and gross after probiotic pills too, and take that as an indication that it's One Pill Too Many. Regular milk and yogurt also make me feel bad. I have no problem with the homemade kefir and homemade 24hr yogurt though, both are very low in lactose due to their extended fermentation, very high in probiotics, and they feel SO healthy and good... -
ARCHIVED Birthday Parties For Kids - Any Ideas?
sarah ruth replied to alison h's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Alison, I've never made gelatine using the sheets, but I believe that is just another way it is available, and should be pure. Open Original Shared Link had some chit chat about leaf gelatine, and suggested 6 sheets to gel 2 cups liquid... this must depend on the size of the sheets.. I've never seen sheets in stores here. as for juice, if the... -
ARCHIVED Celiac - And Small...does This Go Together?
sarah ruth replied to alison h's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
there is NOTHING wrong with being small! But if our intuitions are telling us something is off with our kids then we should listen. Ursa Major, thank you for your helpful post on my question about my kids, I agree that cod liver oil is a very powerful food - my kids LOVE it in those plain gelatin capsules. My mission lately is to increase the nutrient... -
ARCHIVED New To This Site
sarah ruth replied to mothermayiamof2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I remember when it seemed *impossible* to eat a diet without wheat, it felt so empty - what would I eat???!!! ..but it gets easy I promise. We had pizza last night, we eat noodles and cookies and toast, you just need to clear out your cupboards and shift your recipes, different is just as good! That said, the biggest change has been that pizza, toast... -
ARCHIVED Need Your Help!
sarah ruth replied to stef-the-kicking-cuty's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
yes. ALWAYS a good idea to sort through and rinse your legumes, if not for stray grains then for rocks and pebbles. my favorite are the chickpea sized rocks . I do not know the celiac implications of stray grains. My inclination would be to sort them out, rinse very very well, and cook it up, but buy from a different supplier next time. Debbie... -
ARCHIVED Birthday Parties For Kids - Any Ideas?
sarah ruth replied to alison h's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
we always make our own "jello". the gelatine packets here each gel 2 cups of liquid, you dissolve it in 1/4 cup water, add 1/4 boiling water until it's all dissolved (stirring), add 1.5 cups pure juice (non-acidic, we primarily use purple grape juice) and put it in the fridge to set up overnight. I usually make closer to 4 packets at a time to about 6 cups... -
oh ladies! our poor kids . My little guy is a nutter when he eats gluten too (I just asked this same question last week in the kids forum - I hadn't seen this forum yet). SCREAMING at me, painting all in black, unable to focus on simple tasks but a rain-man like ability to recite anything he has seen in a nature movie, collapsing into tears, getting stressed...

ARCHIVED Celiac - And Small...does This Go Together?
sarah ruth replied to alison h's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
my kids are on the smaller side of average, but they're still pretty young. 'Small' and my increased inability to tolerate gluten is actually what helped me figure this all out. I noticed that of our circle of kiddo friends the ones who were similar sized to our kids ALL had grandparents who had been diagnosed celiac (except mine). That said, none of the... -

ARCHIVED Sourdough/levain/kefir Fermented Bread Help?
sarah ruth posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Does anyone make any fermented bread recipes? I would very much like to figure out a loaf that I could make over the week where the flours are being eaten up a bit, even gluten bread was nicer to digest when it had been 'soured'. I haven't started experimenting yet, and would love some tips. Abject failures in the bread department are so disappointing... -
ARCHIVED Celiac For Almost 2 Years - Now, New Health Problems
sarah ruth replied to elfkin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
sorry we don't have this problem, it sounds heartbreaking, your poor little dude. Right now I am re-reading Breaking The Vicious Cycle (or my old edition Food and The Gut Reaction) by Elaine Gotschall as motivation to heal up after this past month eating gluten for the bloodtests. Her daughter was diagnosed with colitis at a young age and really wasting... -
ARCHIVED The Most Delicious Home-made Gluten Free Bread I've Ever Tasted...

Seriously well done with the bread recipe lorka150! Thank you I actually found out about it on a faraway forum for parents in Victoria, BC - and we loved it! I am inspired to bake and create more delicious treats -

I don't know, we're sort of in the same boat. I'm curious to hear what you decide and what other recommend - it will be a while before we get our results. I know we will all figure this out though, and help our families be healthier it you want to do a trial run of a diet, why don't you try the Specific Carbohydrate diet (www.pecanbread.com; www... -
ARCHIVED Any Phd Chemists Out There?
sarah ruth replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hey Crazy Canuck - you could always move out to the wet west coast and feel mouldy all winter long the moss can take over anything here... says one fungal canadian to another... likely you have tried everything, but have you given the specific carbohydrate diet a good try? I feel 70% better when I eat totally gluten-free, but I feel FABULOUS when... -
ARCHIVED Jekyl And Hyde Kids On Gluten? Or Am I Imagining Things..
sarah ruth replied to sarah ruth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
well, thank you for sharing with me - seems I don't have the only nutty kids around!! Our doctor told us a week would be enough to have results on the IgA bloodtest she ordered, but from what I've been reading and what you say it likely won't be. NO WAY will I be doing this for 3-6 months!!! On the positive side, our doctor doesn't seem too heavily invested... -
ARCHIVED Jekyl And Hyde Kids On Gluten? Or Am I Imagining Things..
sarah ruth replied to sarah ruth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, thank you all. This really really validates what I was suspecting. Seriously, aside from the freaking out and obsessing about everything, my five year old has dug out all of our old punk rock indie records and is listening to them really loud (was that phase of my life really about celiac!!?? ) and keeps chosing BLACK for all his watercolours and... -
ARCHIVED Jekyl And Hyde Kids On Gluten? Or Am I Imagining Things..
sarah ruth posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I cannot tolerate gluten foods, haven't been tested celiac but have 'tested' myself enough times that I know it's poison for me. In that intuitive way we feed our families I notice my kids are much calmer, hungerier, happier, and healthier when they only eat with me (gluten-free), and too many trips or parties really set them off into being whiney and irritable...
