ARCHIVED Is Tiredness And Lack Of Energy Part Of Cd
ravenwoodglass replied to ILOVEOMC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Fatigue can be part of celiac but it should be relieved by the gluten-free diet. How did he 'take' the news he was gluten-free? Could he be stressing about now being different and worried about getting the wrong sort of attention at school? For my son the worst thing about the celiac is the depression, could he be getting trace amounts and experiencing... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Slap My Doctor In The Face
ravenwoodglass replied to Lena's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Lena, be aware that if you have been gluten free the test results may very well give a false negative. Heck, they often give false negatives even when your stuffing yourself with it, all the blood they took never caught it with me. I agree with other posters if you feel better gluten free thats the true 'test'. Good luck with your doctor, hope you feel better... -
Yes this is standard. If you go gluten free it may give a false negative in the biopsies. Be sure he takes lots from lots of different locations. In this country doctors feel biopsy is the only 'true' way to diagnose celiac, not sure I agree with that but it is standard to demand this 'proof'. Many GI doctors still consider this rare and don't look for it...

ARCHIVED I Want To Slap My Doctor In The Face
ravenwoodglass replied to Lena's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So, those of you who take bentyl and imodium for celiac...do you find it helps? he says since it helps me I MUST have IBS instead of celiac. I didn't take bentyl, they gave me Librax, but I lived off imodium daily for 15 years. Yea sure it helps, it holds the 'poison' right in there so it can have the most effect. It made sure I could get through most... -
ARCHIVED Daughter In Denial
ravenwoodglass replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
First thanks everybody for your replies and advice. I was suffering from a 'whoops, gluten got ya' depression all weekend which I must admit makes me a bit overemotional. Anyway you are right that this needs to be discussed. I spoke with my ex and asked him why everyone has been hiding this from me and he said he felt she should tell me. With me being... -
Please be aware that while Lay's lists many of their foods as gluten-free there are real issues with crosscontamination. If he is newly diagnosed especially he needs to watch out for this. I have come to realize that I am playing with fire if I consume any of their products, sometimes they are fine other times I react big time. I know this isn't great news...

It could be but usually the swelling doesn't go into the calfs, in most anyway. I would call the doctor tommorrow morning. Were his calves red or hot to the touch, has his discomfort been relieved at all by now? If his legs are hot or red and still real painful it might be prudent to call his doctor tonight for advice. If things have subsided a bit one of...

I did, horribly. The good news is within a month gluten-free this problem went away along with a host of others. I weaned myself off all meds (with doctors knowledge) before going gluten-free. I figured I wouldn't really know if being gluten-free was helping if I continued to take the 5 of so prescriptions I was taking for arthritis, IBD, fibromyalgia,...

ARCHIVED Company Statements
ravenwoodglass replied to laurelfla's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, Welcome to the family. I recently called the neutrogena company and all their shampoos and conditioners are gluten-free. Your doing the right thing by cleaning everything out. I donated everything except the box of Triscuts that I took down to Fort Bragg in Oct 2001 when I went to see my son on family day when he was in training. (It is in a plastic... -
ARCHIVED Daughter In Denial
ravenwoodglass replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
She told her brother that her ulcer and depression and anxiety are all from stress and they always were. When the endo was done the doctor told her she was 'a little bit celiac', to me that's a bit like hearing your a little pregnant. I have asked her why she doesn't order from Ener-g anymore and she told me she could find stuff in Boston. (Never thought... -
ARCHIVED Healing Foods/probiotics
ravenwoodglass replied to kallie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, About the probiotics, on some of the other boards I go to people seem to talk about these like they are the holy grail or something. It is my understanding that these are very helpful for people whose digestive tract bacteria have gotten out of wack due to antibiotic use. If you have used an antibiotic in the last year or so they may be of some help.... -
ARCHIVED New,positive Biopsy Lots Of Dammage
ravenwoodglass replied to Gcbec's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with the poison for everyone statement. It impacts much more than just the gut. I believe its' most serious impact is on the brain. It seems to occur long before the gut symptoms show up and makes life really miserable. Please be aware the doctor will need for you to poison yourself for a time before the endo. I wonder why they demand it. I ended... -
My 19 yr old daughter was diagnosed by blood test and endo about 2 years ago. She went to college last year and came home for X-mas only. She is doing an internship over the summer but her Dad and brother went to see her a couple months ago. She has not been very communicative for a while and I found out from her brother that she has gone off her diet....

ARCHIVED Did I Get My Celiac From One Of My Parents
ravenwoodglass replied to bing69's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, you got the gene from one or both. -
ARCHIVED Int'l Delight Creamers
ravenwoodglass replied to 2old4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nestles Coffee mate French Vanilla is gluten-free. I often find emails don't get a response so I call the company. If you want to check other flavors or ask for their gluten-free list the number is 1-800-637-8534. I always mention that 'gee if your label said gluten-free on the front do you know how much more you would sell?' Also something kind of funny... -
ARCHIVED Maltodextrin/good Or Bad?
ravenwoodglass replied to Babs83's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For our family distilled vinagar is a big no-no if it is made from wheat. We react to it without a doubt, don't need no studies here the blisters tell us all we need to know. We have pretty severe DH and that might make a difference. I believe heinz vinigar is from corn but I always call the company when I try anything new. Many don't list crosscontamination... -
ARCHIVED Could I Have Had This All My Life?
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Please go for potato vodka only. Many places say that grain alcohols and vinagers are okay for us. My families experiences scream differently. My son and I both react to them just as we would to a slice of bread, and the hangovers are awful. We switched to wines, potato vodka and gluten-free beer, Bards Tale is good if you can find it. Don't drink malt liqours... -
Or rye free, or free of crosscontamination. Some times I feel like eating is a crap shoot. I've thought of going with the raw diet but with extensive diverticulosis don't think that would be advised. Stick with the diet, it can be frustrating at times but its worth it.

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And The Workplace
ravenwoodglass replied to Jen H's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Jen, I also had to give up my job. What I did was to use the good taste everyone told me I had to find 'bargins' at second hand shops and sold them on ebay. When I started I was 5 years prediagnosis and used my precious immodiated and Libraxed hour in the afternoon to do a quick sweep of the shops. I didn't make a fortune but it kept the wolves at bay... -
I take 'Country Life' adult chewables and also Maxi-hair by the same company. I get them at a health food store. If you can't find that particular brand check the fine print on any good vitamin. I try to get lots of the B vitamins, 12 in particular because I deal with the ataxia and tingly hands when I get 'got'.

Celiac definately affected my hair. Not only was it very thin but my hair was almost totally white on the top and sides. After diagnosis I went through my shampoos and was shocked how many contained wheat along with my hair dyes (I don't dye at all any more). This was almost 3 years ago. My hair has grown back as thick as it was when I was little, (not always...

Hi, I know I sure can sympathize. I haven't found anything that helps it go away faster. When it happens I make sure I take my gluten-free mega-vitamins and have 1 more cup of coffee than usual. Hopefully someone out there may know of something that helps more. It does go away fairly quickly for us, within a day or so, and I hope it does for you too. Hang...

ARCHIVED Any Celiacs In Blairsville Pa Area?
ravenwoodglass replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks for your reply. Do you know the name of the store and the street it's on? Also do y'all have Wegmans in PA? I wish every company would label their gluten-free foods. It would make life so much easier. Best wishes. -
ARCHIVED Tingling/hurting Feet And Legs
ravenwoodglass replied to abqrock's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This can definately be connected. Before diagnosis this was a great problem for me. One thing that helped was sublingual B12. You should be able to stop the B12 after he has been gluten-free for awhile and his gut has had a chance to heal. Of course ask the doctor first but there shouldn't be any contraindications for this. Make sure the b12 is sublingual...
