I hope you don't mind me saying a prayer for you today. I'm very sorry for what you're going through, & hope you take care of yourself in the days & weeks to come. My understanding is that gluten intolerance/celiac are often implicated in miscarriage or infertility. I also know that tests can be falsely negative, as all of my blood tests were...

How do I talk to my doc about things like the B12 level & Free T4 levels being low when they're within the lab's range values though? I understand the concepts like "optimum" values, but does the medical community? My DHEA was tested, & it was within the "Normal" lab range, as was my cortisol level. I talked to the doctor about possible adrenal...

I finally located my most recent lab tests, & here are some of the results... See if anyone notices anything I'm missing that might contribute to being cold all the time. (sorry for all the details, but I didn't want to leave anything out). July 2007 Red Cell Count: 3.86 (range: 3.7-5.5) Hemoglobin: 12.1 (range: 12.0-16.0) Hematocrit: 35.0 (range...

ARCHIVED Restaurant Frustration
horsegirl replied to horsegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree that because it's a work function, it's much more awkward for me (which is a lot of why I posted to begin with!) I recently attended my employer's entire Behavioral Health Department's holiday luncheon (held at Spaghetti Factory, of all places), & that was very awkward too. There's no way I would have tried to special order a meal there, because... -
ARCHIVED Any Of These Items Gluten-free?
horsegirl replied to NoGluGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use the Trader Joe's brand of vanilla (pure vanilla) & have not had any problems at all. And, it's not expensive!! -
ARCHIVED Restaurant Frustration
horsegirl replied to horsegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I was "only" gluten-free, I was able to find many more selections of restaurants where I could safely make food selections. However, with 4 food intolerances now (& possibly more), & after having gotten sick a couple of times recently from cross-contamination issues, I am VERY wary about eating in restaurants unless I KNOW they can safely accommodate... -
ARCHIVED Restaurant Frustration
horsegirl replied to horsegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for all of the awesome suggestions & replies! I knew I could count on all of you for some help & support. I think I'll take something in a small lunch bag, & eat it while everyone else eats their food. If I get hassled, then I will tell them I have "life-threatening food allergies" & cannot eat there, but have joined my entire staff... -
ARCHIVED Restaurant Frustration
horsegirl replied to horsegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
[if we are ever told that the restaurant's policy is not to allow outside food, we plan to simply say it is our policy to eat meals that don't make us physically ill. But no confrontation has ever come. -
Thanks for all of the responses, everyone! I guess I need to pull out my lab results again & pour over them more thoroughly to find out about ferritin & part of the thyroid function too. I've caught a few "low normal" or slightly below-normal values before, but my doctor always says they're "fine" & not to worry about them. I haven't checked...

To kbtoyssni: I like it! That would be awesome to tell a restaurant that if they pulled attitude about it! Maybe I'll try that. Thanks. -
ARCHIVED Restaurant Frustration
horsegirl replied to horsegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone, for your quick replies. I probably will just bring a little snack in my purse, but it makes me so mad to have to do that! For one thing, the only thing that will work for that is a cold sandwich or a cereal bar, & it's not like gluten-free bread is very appealing! And, since I'm always cold anyway (I just posted on that on another... -
I'm going out to lunch with my coworkers next week to celebrate the new licensure of one of them. They selected a place called "Chinois", which is a Chinese-American fusion place. I checked out their menu, & really don't think anything is going to work since I'm gluten, soy, casein, & egg intolerant. Plus, I'm just getting over being quite ill from...

I feel like I'm always freezing cold, deep inside my body, even when others say it's comfortable or they're even hot. I dress in layers, drink warm beverages, snuggle under blankets, etc but I'm cold probably about 90+% of the time. This past summer I wasn't cold all the time, but still got cold much faster than I ever used to. I've always been sensitive...

ARCHIVED Blue Diamond Almond Milk
horsegirl replied to horsegirl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Well, I heard back from Blue Diamond this morning about their Almond Breeze product. Either I totally missed "soy" in the ingredients all these months (which I doubt) or it wasn't labeled. Here's their response: Good Morning - Thank you for contacting Blue Diamond Growers with your questions and concerns. First, I must clarify that the soy lecithin... -
I have been happily using Blue Diamond unsweetened almond milk ever since I was diagnosed soy intolerant 4 months ago. Unfortunately for me, I stopped checking the labels for ingredients, & only today did I learn that it does contain soy lecithin now. I have no idea when they started adding it, but I'm mad because it was a product I had really been...

I received a phone call 2 days ago from the general manager at the Red Robin where I had this bad experience. He apologized for his staff's seeming lack of understanding of allergen issues & said he's been trying to increase the availability of food choices to people with allergies in his restaurant. He asked me several questions, & seemed interested...

Thanks! Just when I think I've got this "all figured out", something else comes up! -
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!! (could you hear me singing??) Anyway, I'm so glad that you have sensitive coworkers who thought ahead to give you such a nice surprise today; it really makes a big difference to know they support you, doesn't it? Now, celebrate you for the rest of the day too!

I've been doing well on my gluten free lifestyle for some time now, but got to wondering about makeup. I looked at the labels on my compact (powder foundation) as well as my blush, & both have oats as one of the first ingredients. So, I'm assuming they're not gluten free? And I should avoid them since the powder becomes airborne & could be ingested...

ARCHIVED Pacific Brand Almond Milk Isn't Soy Free Or Is It?
horsegirl replied to LoriG's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Blue Diamond Almond Milk. It comes in sweetened or unsweetened versions, & is very mild & smooth. I even make hot rice cereal in it, & it works just great! -
I went to Red Robin yesterday, & had a BAD experience with CLUELESS staff who clearly don't "get" what "food allergies/intolerances" mean, & how seriously they need to take them. My family & friends I was with urged me to write the company a letter, so I did today. I wanted to post a copy of my letter on this forum, & will post the company...

ARCHIVED Glutenous Rice
horsegirl replied to up-late's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Be careful though - a lot of those "California roll" type things have imitation crab meat in them, which almost always contains gluten (from wheat). -
ARCHIVED Dairy And Soy Intolerances -- Damage Or Discomfort
horsegirl replied to pcv's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I asked that same question to both Enterolab & my personal GI doctor. Enterolab told me that anything we produce antibodies to can cause damage, & "should be avoided for life". My GI doctor said that "anything that causes inflammation can cause damage to the small intestine", but in his experience, such damage is "rare". Since I've tested positive... -
ARCHIVED Do You Take Communion?
horsegirl replied to dandelionmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I talked to my pastor about it, who at first wanted me to take "just a tiny bit" of the wheat wafer but I told him I couldn't. So, I ordered a box of allergen-free wafers from Ener-G, & keep them in the sacristy at church. Before communion, I place one on the altar next to the plate of wafers, & the pastor blesses them along with the other wafers...
