Oops, we were posting at the same time. Try eliminating dairy and soy to see if it helps, and if it doesn't, look for whatever else could be the cause.

She is exclusively breastfeed and I have been gluten-free for about 4 months now. It seemed to correct the problem at first, then the bm issues returned. I realized I was eating gluten and cut it out but the bm has never returned to normal.

My dr. is a G/I specialist but I have little faith in him. He flat out states that a child under the age of 8 months can't have celiac. We all know that is not true but try to get a dr. to change their mind. We have pretty much decided that we will get a second opinion and if they agree that scoping is the way to go then we will probably do that. I don't know what else to do at this point. It has been 4 months that we have been unable to figure out how to fix her issues.
-
So the G/I has decided that he wants to scope my 6 month old to find out what is going on. She is having green mucusy bowel movements. He says he is looking for damaged villi but not for celiac cause she is to little for that. My question is, has anyone had a baby this young scoped? It sounds pretty invasive and I really don't want to go that route. I am not even sure what it will accomplish. He has only decided to do this because we asked for a referral to Stanford.
Thanks

I would love to know what your daughters issues are. We are in the same boat. Rebecca began having issues about 4 months ago and is now 6 months (today actually). She is exclusively breastfeed and I have removed
Gluten
Dairy
Eggs (starting to add these back in when cooked in something like bread)
Soy
Nuts
Citrus
Beans
Brocolli
Corn (just took out even the small corn)
Even with all these items removed her poop remains green and mucusy. I know that some of these foods are definately an issue. Dairy scalds her butt, Soy makes her spit up. We avoid nuts because my older son has allergies to them. Beans seemed to give her gas. She is a very small baby only gaining about 2-3 ounces a month on average (She is only 11lbs. 13oz.). We are trying to get into Stanford to see a G/I at the moment but are getting the run around. I know how frustrating it can be.

My doctor gave us VSL #3 to use with my daughter. You can get it over the counter. I can't say that it really helped any and she refuses to take it so we dont worry about it. It comes as a powder and you mix it with any liquid.

Here's a link to a Gluten-free Casein-free hot dog bun recipe made by the same lady who made the famous bread recipe. You should be able to turn it into hamburger buns. Let us know how it turns out if you try it!

What is amaranth flour and is there a common substitute? I hate to buy another flour.
Thanks

Annalise Roberts has a recipe for homemade hot dog and hamburger buns on her website. Everything I've ever made from her recipes is phenomenal so I bet these are great.

Has anybody made these with rice milk instead?

I am looking for a good bagel recipe. It needs to be gluten free and if possible dairy free. I can use rice milk so if somebody has a recipe that would allow that that would be great. Thank you so much.

I am so glad you got good results. We went to see the G/I today and really did not get anywhere. Rebecca is not loosing weight and has dropped to the 1% for weight. He is doing RAS testing and wants me to supplement but I don't know what to do. I am trying to get into Stanford now.

What is Lorka bread?

I just got Robbie some rice cakes. I got the chocolate ones for a treat and he seems to love those. He is also into raisins and he likes the tortillas I make. Cheese is huge, yogurt, apple slices, grapes. We have not gone the specialty route at all cause it is so new. Oh, he likes Envirokids Gorilla Munch cereal as a snack and the Envirokidz Organic crispy rice bars are good too.

Thanks for the advice. I tried the flourless ones but the were too dry for my husband who is having a hard time with the gluten free thing.

I want to convert a peaunt butter cookie recipe to gluten free. The recipe calls for 1/2 cup all purpose flour. Does anyone know what I would use instead? Also is there a general rule or does it depend on what I am making. I am new to this gluten thing and still trying to figure it all out. Thanks for the help.

Thank you both so much for the advice. I have seen a lactation consultant and she does not think it is a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance but I did think of that. She tested my breastmilk and at the beginning of a feeding it has more fat than most formulas on the market.
I have stopped eating the chips so will see if that helps. I did notice that Rice Dreams said it contained gluten and I am using Pacific which states that it is gluten free. It is so hard as I do not have the reaction to the food to tell what could be causing it. I stopped buying bulk rice flour because I realized the risk of cc was incredibly high and that could be part of the problem. I am also taking the entire house gluten-free which is not making my husband very happy but I hope it will help.
Thank you both again. :

I saw that recipe for bread and thought it sounded good. Do you substitute the same amount of brown rice flour as it calls for gluten free flour and the same amount of sourgham as garfava flour? I would like to try to make it.
Thank you for the advice. I will definately try to not replace old favorites with new ones. Luckily I found a tortilla recipe that he likes better than the gluten one. The other big hurdles will be not having chicken nuggets or bagels.

I have decided to take my entire house gluten free. I worry that the cc to my daughter is too great and also question whether my 3 year old might be gluten intolerant. My concern is how do change a 3 year old who is use to breads, pasta's ect. over to a gluten free lifestyle? Also, snack ideas would be great. This is going to be hard for him I suspect but want to make the transition as easy as possible.
Thank you

Here is my tortilla recipe.
1/4 cup tapioca flour
1/4 cup potato flour
1/4 cup white rice flour
1/4 cup brown rice flour
1/4 cup potato starch
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons xantham gum
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup water.
Mix together, I usually need to add more water until it is moist but not sticky. Let sit for 10 minutes. Roll flat with rolling pin. Make sure they are not too thin. Mine are never round but they are suppose to be. Cook in skillet until desired color is achieved.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

I am struggling with the same type of issue. We went to the dr. yesterday and he said it was colic, and claimed that the green mucus poop is unrelated to it. I am not sure why he would assume that but he has. We are in the process of eliminating all gluten from my life so we will see if it gets better. I wish you the best of luck.

I would love to go with you to the next meeting Janel. Do you know how you get into Stanford? I don't have the items that you mentioned but will definately get them. We have gone gluten free with all pasta's so I will just replace the colander and buy spoons for me. One thing I am wondering about is the waffle maker. It has been gluten free as long as I have but was used for gluten before that. Should I replace it?
Thanks
-
Ok I will try that because I have been eating them quite a bit. How do you find out about the cross contamination issues?
-
The chicken broth I am using is Swansons Natural Goodness. Cambells told me that the Natural goodness was gluten-free but not the others. As for the chips, they are Lay's not Ruffles, sorry. The ingredients are potatoes, sunflower oil and salt. Are they not safe? As for the flour I do buy my white rice flour in bulk, guess I will have to stop that but everything else is individual and from the Korean market.
The G/I has not run any gluten bloodwork, or any bloodwork at all for the matter. I am pretty sure we see the same one or at least they are in the same office. I see Dr. McDonald. I found gluten-free hair products and am working on makeup. I dont really use the toaster so that is not an issue and the pans I have are new with no scratches so another part of this board told me they should be ok to keep using.
I hope that I am right about what is causing this but I guess the only way to be sure is to eliminate everything gluten and go from there. Thank you again for the support.

My biggest problem with figuring out what is glutening us is that I am not the one with the issue, it is my breastfeeding baby who has the issue and once it occurs it takes a while for it to show up and even longer for the symptoms to subside.
-
Thank you all for your support. I found that my shampoo and hairspray both contained wheat so they are out. I am looking very carefully at everything I eat. It is a pretty bland diet so not that hard. For breakfast I make pancakes that consist of brown rice flour, potato starch, tapioca flour, sugar, salt, rice milk and add some cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice to give them some flavor. I usually make a smoothie around 11 and it has peaches, pears, mango and pomagranate juice. For lunch I have rice made with chicken broth and seasoned with italian seasoning and chicken seasoned with either italian seasoning or a little salt, pepper, chili powder and cumin. I have ruffles potato chips for a snack and usually chicken seasoned the same way and either rice or potatos with the same seasoning for dinner. Sometimes I make tortillas with dinner and those are a rice flour mix too. That is pretty much my diet at this point. I hope that I am on the right track with the gluten. When the gluten first came out the green poop went away and when we challenged it, it came back so that is why my focus is on it, not other foods.

I am already off dairy, soy, corn, eggs, gluten, citrus, nuts, and beans. Total elimination of the corn is new as of Monday, prior to that I was only off big corn ie. popcorn, corn chips and tried to stay away from corn syrup. I am not sure where else to go on the elimination diet at this point.
