  1. I discussed this with her and we agreed that she'd do a trial week of gluten-free eating next week, starting on Saturday night or Sunday. I'll have her help me plan out meals for the week so she doesn't feel deprived (and I'll probably get a few gluten-free goodies just for her- just as we did when we first went on Feingold.) Then she'll have some challah...
  2. Well, I didn't have any fruits or vegetables at home yesterday to juice (or the energy to dig up my juicer!) but I drank plenty of water and had a lot of vitamin C and apple cider vinegar. I'm feeling a whole lot better today. Still tired, but not nearly as sick. In a way I'm kind of glad I had that reaction because it reinforces that I'm doing the right...
  3. I got glutened yesterday and I'm feeling miserable. Is there any way to speed up the healing process so I can stop hurting and feeling foggy and miserable?
  4. So how do I go about getting an official test for this? I am NOT willing to eat gluten again for the sake of a lab test! Should I talk to the pediatrician about testing my kids before making any dietary changes for them? I'm not at this point restricting what they eat away from home, although I do plan to make my kitchen gluten-free (or close to it) for...
  5. OK, if we can see results in only a couple of days, then this is do-able. I just spoke to her about it (she's homeschooled and playing on the other computer right now.) She wants to enjoy the leftover pizzas in the fridge, and doesn't want to give up challah on Friday night, but she's willing to give it a week. Next Sunday, she'll go completely gluten-free...
  6. I haven't had any kind of testing done- I figured that if the dietary changes help, there's the positive test right there. I've just heard about too many false negatives to put much stock in lab tests. OTOH, it would be nice to know exactly what I'm dealing with. Is this something I'm likely to outgrow as my gut heals? Do I really need to avoid all grains...
  7. A couple of things: I had an opened package of wheat flour in a plastic container, plus an unopened package, when I decided to go gluten-free. We have maybe 3-4 lbs left from the 2nd package. What am I supposed to do with the flour we already have in the house if we don't eat it? I can't eat most of the gluten-free foods, especially the bread replacements...
  8. It sounds to me like you're not tolerating it well. Does it matter if it's from the fiber or the protein? It's not a food you can comfortably eat, period.
  9. At this point, I'm the only family member on a gluten-free diet. Last year, homemade pizza was a big hit with the kids and a relatively inexpensive meal. DD has been begging me to make pizza again, so I agreed, with the caveat that she'd have to make the dough and shape the pizzas (we make personal sized pizzas). We ended up with flour all over the kitchen...

    ARCHIVED Paleo Diet

I eat fatty meats, and use animal fats for cooking (such as the chicken fat that I skim off chicken soup.) I disagree with the Paleo Diet author about fatty meats being unhealthy- I don't think cavemen cared about fat content- they simply ate what was available, and didn't waste any part of the animal! Again, this goes back to me eating what my body does...
  11. I've been gluten free, legume free, and dairy free for almost two months now- I could NOT survive without meat, fish, and eggs several times a day! I've also been eating low-carb since July (longer than I've been gluten-free.) Nuts make a good quick snack on the go. I always keep some in my purse. Dried fruit is equally portable, natural, and vegetarian...
  12. A couple of things that could have been wrong with the chinese food: 1) There could have been wheat flour in the sauce, or soy sauce brewed with wheat used to flavor the sauce. 2) there could have been cross-contamination in the kitchen 3) you might be reacting to something else that was put in the food, such as MSG 4) you could be allergic to...
  13. I felt "hung over" on Jan 1st, and the only alcohol I had was a single glass of wine. I have about half a glass of wine about once a week, so I don't think that's what made me so super sick the entire next day. I suspect it was the vanilla extract in my (virgin) eggnog- it's a huge Costo-sized bottle I purchased before going gluten-free and I suspect...
  14. I personally prefer drinking coffee for the caffeine to prevent migraines.

    ARCHIVED Paleo Diet

I'm on a modified Paleo Diet. I've been low-carbing since before I cut out gluten, and so far I've lost about 20 lbs (30 more to go!) There are a bunch of foods permitted on Paleo that I can't eat personally: legumes such as green beans or fresh peas, since they cause as much GI distress as gluten, and I limit the carbs (fruits and honey) for weight loss...
  16. Maybe next year you can help them make the meal gluten-free at their home? I see no reason they can't make stuffing from gluten-free bread, and pie crusts based on rice flour, etc- if they have your help in purchasing ingredients and learning how to use them. It might make for a less stressful visit all around.
  17. I wouldn't risk it. I'd either buy a new one or bake the old-fashioned way.
  18. So all brands of rum are fine? Goody! I can add rum to my eggnog tonight!
  19. I wouldn't throw out any food you've already prepared- maybe your best bet is to not worry about doing an elimination diet for now, but do some more research first, and maybe find time for some allergy tests before starting?
  20. I've also suffered from depression off and on since my teenage years, and had some kind of "emotional problems" in elementary school that were severe enough to land me in special ed. I'm not sure if I ever had any kind of diagnosis as a young child, but I do know that my Mom considered putting me on the Feingold Diet when I was little (until my therapist...
  21. I think you need to clarify to people that you're not just avoiding wheat; you're also avoiding barley, rye, spelt, and oats and any products that may have come into contact with them. If you had a wheat allergy, but not celiac disease, you wouldn't have a problem with beer. Can't you drink wine or a mixed drink at bars and restaurants if they don't...
  22. That's how much I've eaten so far today, with breakfast and lunch. I haven't had dinner yet. Did you read my update this morning? I'm down 4 lbs from the last time I stepped on the scale about a week ago- which means 2 lbs weight lost in the past month- I'm guessing the weight gain was water weight/bloating. I'm being as active as I can- but I can...
  23. I've been losing weight on low-carb- in fact, it's the only way I've ever lost weight and kept it off. I'm most definitely a "protein type." Exercise isn't really an option because of my fibromyalgia- some days I can be active, and other days I just can't be, not without being in pain for several days afterwards. Anyway, I got on the scale again...
  24. Back in July, I weighed 190 lbs and I lost 18 lbs on a low-carb diet. I'm only 5'2" and my goal weight is 140 lbs. Right now I weigh 172. After changing my eating habits, and no longer relying on grains as staples of my meals, I decided I was ready to try going wheat-free, which I've long suspected caused health problems for me, but I never had the willpower...
  25. Eggs are a common allergen- they're "bad" if you're allergic to them. Mayo contains eggs, and often soy oil.
