  1. It could be a detox reaction- now that you're no longer "poisoning" your body, your body is able to devote some energy into clearing out some of the yuckies, and when they're cleared through the pores, pimples can result.
  2. Yeah, I noticed that too- why put soy into almond milk? If I could handle soy I'd be buying soymilk to begin with! I still use coconut milk (comes in cans and is thick like cream, not easily pourable like milk) and I'm thinking of making my own almond milk from almond butter and water in the blender. I haven't tried it yet, but I did put a spoonful of...
  3. If you're just getting started and trying to heal, I'd stick to things that are clearly labeled gluten-free and not take any chances. I'm not sure what to tell you about dairy, as I've been avoiding dairy for longer than I've been avoiding gluten.
  4. (((((HUGS)))))) I'm so glad I did my own cooking for Thanksgiving this year (we don't celebrate Christmas.) Maybe next year you can help your parents make gluten-free stuffing and gluten-free pie crusts?
  5. My guess would be that you're reacting to the nuts themselves. The nuts come with a "made in a facility that processes peanuts and other tree nuts" not a "made in a facility that processes wheat" warning. I've been eating TJ's almonds and pecans for months.
  6. Weird. It's been moved to "pre diagnosis" so I guess that's where it goes? Anyway, I just had the lightest menstrual cycle that I've had in years, after 6 weeks on the gluten-free diet! I hope this becomes the new "normal" for me!
  7. Yup, they get our outgrown toys, outgrown kids' clothes, "outshrunk" adult clothes, etc. A few months ago I offered a box of kids' videos on Freecycle, and a woman responded that she could bring these items to the DV shelter where she worked. Since then, if I have anything to donate, I email her directly and don't even post offers on Freecyle anymore. ...
  8. I don't know if I have Celiac Disease, wheat allergy, gluten allergy, wheat or gluten "sensitivity" or what. The only diagnosis I have right now is Fibromyalgia and right now I'm not pursuing additional lab testing- if the diet works, who cares about the label? (And if it doesn't work, then the lab tests wouldn't have shown anything anyway, right?) I have...
  9. Thanks for all your responses. I'm having a tough enough time making sure I stay gluten-free without having to worry about the bathtub, so I threw out the sliver of oatmeal soap that was left a couple of weeks ago and didn't open up a new one. Today I took the unopened package of oatmeal soap and added it to the pile of stuff we're donating to the women...
  10. I regularly shop in Trader Joe's- I'm in there at least once a week getting milk (for the kids) and eggs so I buy a lot of their products: crackers and cereals for my kids, canned fish and nuts for all of us. I've found that their brands are far cheaper than equivilent products sold in other stores- and it's convenient for me to shop there since I'm there...
  11. I bought it before Thanksgiving in an effort to make gluten-free, low carb gravy. It caused me some GI distress, so I don't plan to use it anymore. I still have a fairly large package of it (well, a small container, but when 1/4 tsp is a serving there's quite a bit in there!) and I'm not sure what to do with it. I'll probably hang onto it and see if my...
  12. Oh, I've been avoiding ALL dairy- I've been avoiding casein or any other potential "hidden cow milk protein" for years- what I've recently cut out was heavy cream, butter, and products made from sheep or goat milk. I couldn't have breathed in any flour this week because the flour wasn't even taken out of the pantry; I was working with frozen (then thawed...
  13. As of yet I haven't had any kind of lab tests for food allergies- I'm just trying to figure all this out with an elimination diet. When I first went dairy, soy, and gluten free (about a month ago) I noticed that my nose cleared up a whole lot. I tested cream and got congested again, so I stopped that. My nose cleared up in a few days. I've had a hard...
  14. This was boring old black tea. Not even decaffeinated. I had planned on doing that, but my daughter doesn't like the Trader Joe's rice pasta I bought, and I can't eat a whole bowl of pasta anyway due to other health issues. And my parents just gave us several boxes of whole wheat pasta- I'm pretty sure Mom bought it, then Dad didn't like it, so they...
  15. I personally wouldn't use that product because of the paraben and the synthetic coloring, but neither of those contain gluten. The only possible danger would be in the flavoring- not too likely, if it's a cherry or mint flavor, but still a possibility.
  16. I've been using Fitday to track my food consumption since July, when I got serious about weight loss. I just discovered the "journal" feature, which I'm now using to mark when I've had potential gluten reactions and if I'm potentially getting exposed to gluten outside of what I eat (such as cleaning up my kids' dinners.) Today I took a look at my posts...
  17. Before I went completely gluten-free, and was just avoiding wheat, I bought a loaf of Trader Joe's 100% whole spelt bread. On the ingredient panel, it listed "spelt flour (wheat)" followed by whatever other ingredients were in it.
  18. Does Pacific Foods unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk have gluten in it? I bought some yesterday because I'm getting sick of coconut milk in everything, and I've found it to be quite yummy! I'm gluten-free, dairy free, mostly soy free, and low carb- so many gluten-free products don't work for me. But this morning I'm having GI symptoms again- my stools...
  19. I got rid of my nonstick pans YEARS ago and I don't have any wooden spoons. I do have some bamboo chopsticks but I didn't use them last night. The pasta pot was totally separate from anything I ate. I re-used the frying pan from the liver and onions to warm up my spinach. We keep kosher, so we already have 2 sets of dishes, pots, and pans. Since I'm...
  20. Today I had some frozen spinach with dinner- I opened up a new package, a different brand than last time. Then this evening I had what I call "toxic poops"- where it feels like my poops are burning my bowels and it hurts to come out and I'm still sore even though I've already "gone". This is the exact same symptom I had when I last tested wheat, before...
  21. The party went remarkably well. I ate well before leaving, AND I brought my own latkes. It turns out I only ate one latke (but the kids had a few) because there was other stuff I could eat- several different kinds of fish plus the 3 salads my mom brought (she actually brought 4 salads, not 3, and only one had cheese I can't eat.) Between the lox, the...
  22. That's great!! In fact, it's probably simpler to make gluten-free latkes for everybody than it is to try and keep one batch separate for one child. With my family, it's kind of complicated. I've only been gluten-free a few weeks, and I'm not 100% sure it's going to help me, and I'm still learning how to do this myself so how can I teach somebody else...
  23. Thanks for the recipe- I bookmarked it, and I'll experiment with it sometime when I'm just making stuff for my own family (plus I'll try it with teaspoons in place of ounces so if it's horrible, I haven't wasted too much food. ) ITA about the contamination risk if my cousins make latkes with a gluten-free recipe- I'd rather just KNOW I can't eat the...
  24. Trust me- they're NOT going to change their tried-and-true recipe for one person- and due to my fibro I really can't help them with latke prep. Peanut allergies are different- I'm not at risk of anaphalaxis if I touch wheat or gluten, so being in the same room as the latkes isn't going to kill me. The same would NOT be true for my friend's 4yo if I...
  25. This Sunday, my family is having its annual Hanukkah get-together. It's a potluck, and the host family is making latkes (potato pancakes; their recipe includes wheat flour). Generally all the food is placed on the same table and everybody helps themselves, then we light the menorahs, then we open presents, then they serve dessert. This morning my Mom asked...
