ARCHIVED Alcohol
Krysten replied to JANMAZ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I only do potato vodkas. They claim many of the grain ones are ok because of the distillation, but I swear if I drink even a few sips of a grain vodka, I fell out of it, but I can drink a glass of potato vodka & be just fine. Some wines are ok, but some places uses wine in the barrels, etc. So I always check online before i try anything. -
ARCHIVED What To Bring? How To Discuss?
Krysten replied to DeerGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd also bring cereal, applesauce, if you can eat dried fruit maybe a bag of that, crackers, etc. And see if it's possible to get fruit like bananas or something that hasn't been cut since you don't know how clean the knife or cutting board was. Maybe even individual cans/cups of fruit as well. Better to bring too much than too little -
I would not take a chance w/the catering company simply because I had gone over the who gluten-free thing for me at my own wedding & I still got sick even though everyone swore they were on it. Apparently the chef wasn't fully aware of what gluten-free cooking was.

ARCHIVED New Member To The Glueton Free Life
Krysten replied to Stiffy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I would get elisabeth Hasselbeck's book on the gluten-free Diet because she talks about how to grocery shop & things to watch out for so you don't get sick in restaurants and how to avoid getting sick from cross contamination (like if you put your gluten-free toast in a toaster that has wheat crumbs in it). Basically the book gave me info that drs didn... -
I know at least some grocery stores in Switzerland carry gluten-free items because my hair stylist was there in the spring & brought me back some things: cereal, cookies, crackers. She said there were frozen items, too. She said there was a lot of selection.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cosmetics And Toiletries
Krysten replied to Lisa79's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
People have had issues with their hair falling out & rashes, etc from shampoos w/gluten in them and I got DH from a lotion with gluten and I had a lot of eye problems that I had never experienced before and found it was the wheat germ oil in my mascara. As soon as I stopped using the mascara, no more problems (I had thought it was a freak allergy thing... -
ARCHIVED High Altitude Baking
Krysten replied to mushroom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
When I lived in South Dakota I always had to bake everything longer, usually 20 at least. Sometimes 30 minutes or more. Brownies were my toughest thing since they never seemed quite done, but a stylist there told me when making cakes (cakes often came out very dense as did pound cake) & brownies you could use an extra egg as well as additional baking... -
ARCHIVED Had To Go Completely Gluten Free Due To Dh...have Some Questions. Please Help!
Krysten replied to labsr4me2's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Elisabeth Hasselbeck's new book made me feel better, too because she talks about how careful you have to be especially with cross contamination. I had a big improvement when I changed to gluten-free beauty products--shampoos, etc. And Elisabeth talks about how she got sick after gluten-free hairspray was used on her & she was in a cloud of it. So many... -

I had a situation where I used hand soap in a bathroom & got sick hours later since there was still residue on my hand even though I had washed them again at home with my safe soap. Recently, I saw a friend of mine have a reaction on her cheek after hugging a friend & we figured it was either the friend's makeup or a hair care product that caused... -
ARCHIVED Cetaphil-not Guaranteed gluten-free!
Krysten posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just heard back from Cetaphil that they cannot confirm or deny the presence of gluten in ANY of their products. I had heard the the Gentle skin cleanser was the only one that was OK, but wanted to check. Seems that might not be safe now either. So what to use now? -
ARCHIVED Depressing Teeth Decay Problem
Krysten replied to Alternative mama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got external resorbtion, which means my nerve is hollowing out my tooth. After a surgery to stop it, I found it didn't work so I had to have the tooth removed (had issues w/my pain killer) and then had a pain in the butt getting a bridge put in. I am so over this!!!! I actually almost cried in the dentist chair on several occasions. They aren't sure this... -
ARCHIVED Cosmetic Help
Krysten replied to DOCKLEARFAN's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had e-mailed Mary Kay about some products (eye shadow, gloss, blush) and their medical dept. called me. They're sending me a list of ingredients, but the woman said since they all have dye (color) in them, that's derived from grain. Same with alcohol and she couldn't give me an answer on the vitamin E source either cause they get thigns from different sources... -

California baby Wash is gluten-free, although a tad expensive. Finesse is and so are the soaps and shampoos from Gluten-free Savonnerie. I called Dove & asked about their cleanisng wipes for the face & they were, but she said one of the shampoos has wheat in it & a sensitive skin lotion has oats in it. -

ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals - Great gluten-free Mineral Make-up!
Krysten replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got my Everyday Minerals samples this week (you can test out colors & finishes of a few shades of the makeup, a concealer, and a blush for under 4 bucks). I like the matte finish--kept me shine-free after taking a walk & I tend to get oily. and the concealer is amazing! Normally concealer looks obvious on me, and I never tried a powder concealer... -

I recently found out my minerla makeup (Physican's Formule) wasn't gluten-free & my liquid foundation is too heavy for everyday. I was goign to order Bare Escentuals, but I checked out makeupalley.com's makeup reviews & the girls on there liked a product called Everday Minerals better. Best news is that when I went to their website (I e-mailed too...
