  1. Wow, that does sound frustrating, while I didn't have exactly the same thng, I have hadbreastfed only 8 months olds, it is exhausting. I remember the exasperation of constant nursing, made worse by my MIL comments on why I wasn't feeding the child (uhh, because of the crying and rashes!) I a gald I held off on the solids and kept nursing, a healthy baby is...
  2. this is very much like what I went through my my dd, now 4. I started taking dairy out when she was 2 weeks old, then wheat, much better, but not all better, then eventually all gluten, and nuts, corn, and soy. Adn then she did great. her bm's were stinky and mucousy gross, tough still the right color, if a little too yellow. By honey,do you mean the consistency...
  3. there are so many possibilities that it could be, dairy, soy adn wheat sensitivities beign at the top of the list, the overactive let-down also causes green poops as a tell tale sign. If you can, go to Breastmilk only and try cutting out dairy, soy and wheat for a few weeks. If things get better, you could "test" on of those items and see. When my youngest...
  4. This is reassuring. WE have been gluten free for 7 months or so, dairyfree for maybe 3 months, and it has been slow. We had one burst the beginning of the summer and then leveled off. My 4 year old dd wieghs 27.5pounds, which made us happy, and I jsut changed over hr fall clthes and after 3 years the 2Ts are too short. so it's progress but as not a speedy...
  5. Putting your child on medications like that is not the easy way out, nor is it generally done without a lot of thought, consideration, and tears. Sometimes it is the best choice, other times it's not. I have a nephew on meds, an dI nwo tiwas a tough decision making process full of desperation. I have considered ADD meds for my 7 year old, but decided against...
  6. If his reactions to wheat are so clear, I"m not sure what the once a week suffering is for, expecially since it takes a few days at least to recover from it. with my dd, I had taken gluten and dairy out as an infant b/c she reacted, without conlusitng a MD. (I regret this now, because records would have been helpful, but alas) I figured at the time it...
  7. We finished our VBS a few weeks ago, I was the teacher for dd (4), so I brought her own snack and gave it to her each day. I did then run over to my son's table in a different group to take his snack away and give him one I had brought. I used the better than principle so they were always pleased with their snack. I had told the volunteers the deal and...
  8. My dd, just turned 4, had an initial gain goign gluten free, then nothing for some time. When we also took out dairy and added digestive enzymes she finally started really gaining and growing. I give her bromelain and acidophilus at every meal--chewable and yummy. Let's see we were gluten free in Feb, inititally gained 1/2 lb., then another half pound until...
  9. I have four kids on four different types of fish oil. They all have specific preferences, and it was easier this way. My 7 year old takes Go fish, Brainy kids, omega 3 soft chews. he gets 2 a day, which is 200mg dha. My 9 and 12 year old take capsules, they each get 1000 my a day. my 4 gets a omega 3 gummy chew. I think it lists 250mg. They smell awful...
  10. I have been wondering about the enzymes and probiotics lately. We took my 7 year old to a naturopath, and he has been on some enzymes, moslty bromelein and a mixed veggie based enzyme, and acidophilus, as well as of gluten and dairy. REally improved his energy and some weight gain, no effecton ADD behavior. I have also been giving my 3 year old the same...
  11. My dd turns 4 in a week and has also gained and grown very little she was 2. She was gluten free until she turned 2, then the Md said to give her gluten and get her a blood test, after a few months we had her tested, it was negative and we noticed no ohter real effects. she was always tiny, but by 3 it was clear her growth had really levelled off. her blood...
  12. There is some research showign diet related to repeated plugged ducts, particularly high fats and low iron. Lecithin supplements have shown to be helpful in reducing the ducts in these cases. I know several moms that this made a huge difference for. other common causes are tight bras, baby carrier straps, and changes in your nursing pattern which leave milk...
  13. I am feeling better about his food safety at camp now, but our council also isn't flexible on the price. It just bugs me to pay for something we clearly aren't going to use, Maybe he can try to drink a lot of bug juice to make up for it. Patty
  14. Sticking to the diet sounds like the best plan. AS far as worrying about when to give solids, it varies by child, My first two didnt' really eat anything until 8-9 months, and then very little, my third started solids at 5 months, and was chowing down by 8-9 months. I watched each baby and their individual reactions and needs. If your baby is oding best...
  15. I was just this morning contemplating how to handle scout camp this summer. My son is cub scout so is only going for 2 nights with his Dad, but I'm wondering how to handle it. I hadn't thought about sending the prepared frozen meals, like little TV dinners? My ds would probably like that a lot if I can get creative in the packaging. What gets me is that...
  16. Oh, just wanted to add, at first I was off only wheat liekyou listed for a about 3 weeks, and she was 75% better, excema gone, and only the occaisonal stinky BM. When I finally tracked the smelly poops, it turned out to the spelt pasta and the oatmeal (yes, I now some people can tolerate oatmeal, but not us) When we went off all gluten it got better. There...
  17. Your story sounds a lot like mine. My dd is now 3 1/2, but as an infant she was rashy, cranky, and had foul BMs-mucousy,stinky until I changed my diet, I ended up off gluten, dairy, soy, nuts and corn, and she was great, rashes cleared up and BM were normal, she was still pretty tiny, following the 15 percentile line, but as long as they are following a...
  18. Dora the Explorer cereal is gluten free and look almost like those puff thingy-it's star shaped and very popular at my house. Frozen veggies-mine loved little cubes of frozen veggies and peas, plus they are too small to be chokable. Really any small slcied fruits and veggies were popular here, though not so quick and portable as crunchy cereal. Patty
  19. It is hard to stay on the diet when youa recraving and don't immediately feel the pain. I have had the same problem with sugar, I can't tolerate any processed sugar (or honey or other sweetners) or my arthritis flairs, and I become seriously depressed, since I discovered this 15 years ago, I have been clear for 2-3 years, then start cheating a little, for...
  20. Usually it's the protein in the dairy products, not the lactose that causes the reaction, thus explaining the normal lactose test. We did continue eating some yogurt and hard cheese which she tolerated well. The protein in these is partiallybroken down through the culturing. Also, I couldn't bear the thought of taking away all of her favorite things. ...
  21. I was at a CERP session for Lactation consultants 3 years ago where this topic was discussed. It seemed that is was better to introduce gluten while a child was still getting breastmilk b/c on the antobodies in the breastmilk to reduce or eliminate an immune response. What I asked and didn't get a good answer too at the time was the breastmilk eliminating...
  22. My 6 year old son had Lyme this summer. His first symptom was speech regression, he couldn't say any "r" sounds whenhe had previously. When I took him to the MD, he suggestedit might be ear infections, hehad no history of this and normal speech development. I mentioned a deer tick point at this point, as another issue, I didn't make the connection yet...
  23. I don't know if your babies were breastfed or not, but a strong or overactive let-down often leads to extreme weight gain in the firts 3-4 months, followed by a drop off, usually discovered with confusion around the 6 month check-up. That might explain early bursts of high weight gain. Also, some babies dont' gain as much when they start moving, their...
  24. I've been gluten free for over 3 years, I feel great, no more bloating, gas, adn abdominal misery. My dd, 3 1/2 has been off since January for growth issues. She has grown an inch and gained 2 lbs, after not growing or gaining for 6 months (or more). She still is picky sometimes and has tantrums about things, but gluten or not she is 3. She is sleeping...
  25. I can empathize with your feelings as well. We just took my 3 year old off gluten almost 3 months now b/c of growth issues, and she is doign pretty well. I look at my 6 year old, who has off and on complained of stomach pains, always has the dark circles under his eyes, and generally less energy than the other. He was tested at age 3, and the results were...
