ARCHIVED Gluten Free Graham Craker Thingys?
Smunkeemom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My 2 year old is having a beach theme birthday party, and she wants this "sand cake" that she saw in a magazine, basically it's vanilla pudding with graham crackers sprinkled on top with a parasol and a bouncy ball on the 'sand' I need gluten free graham type crackers, if not we are going to "smash her animal cookies" (those were her words) but I think... -

weird bruises are from vitamin K def. ? and that can be caused by celiac?! OMG. I had the blood test when my girls did and they said I "carry it" but it wasn't turned on yet.... I get bruises so easy and I forget where (like once I got a bruise from my kid holding my finger while she was nursing) *goes back to the doctor* see? the show did help... -
ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
Smunkeemom replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
yeah, there was an episode of ER where it was briefly mentioned also (I notice stuff like that, like on Gimore Girls when Lane was talking about gluten free diets., I could go into the whole conversation but it's off topic) -
ARCHIVED How Can Eating In Restaurants Not Get You Sick?
Smunkeemom replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
you know, I don't know. I used to think if we ordered gluten free food from an understanding restraunt that it would be okay, then the other night my daughter got DH rash from a gluten free meal from a "celiac friendly" restraunt. I realized she can't eat out (at least not risk free) It's kinda sad. -
ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
Smunkeemom replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
I have recieved a ton of emails and phone calls today because of the show, if nothing else, at least people realize that Celiac disease can be serious if untreated. I think a lot of my friends didn't realize (no matter how much I told them) how very important it is to be gluten free when you are a celiac. I have had to answer the same question all day... -
ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease

It was on tonight, and I am so glad that I recorded it!!!! It was so good. I am expecting about 40 phone calls tomorrow about "isn't that what your girls have?" LOL oh, well, can't ask for better awareness than to be on a show that a lot of people watch. -
I agree, and I am a tax preparer. Technically you can deduct the cost above what's "normal" as a medical expense for foods that are gluten free if your doctor puts you on a gluten free diet, such as gluten free bread that costs $6.00 when regular is $2.00, you deduct $4.00 You don't have to send in your reciepts or a doctor's note or anything, but you...

ARCHIVED Need Suggestions Please
Smunkeemom replied to Tony'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
when I was trying to get my 2 year old to gain weight, we did a lot of startches (potatoes mostly) and also, Pediasure. I agree though that you need to make sure he doesn't have allergies that you don't know about. -

Peanut butter playdough * 3 1/2 cups peanut butter * 4 cups confectioners' sugar * 3 1/2 cups honey * 4 cups dry milk powder 1. In large bowl, cream together peanut butter and confectioners' sugar, then beat in honey and fold in milk powder. Divide into 15 equal portions and refrigerate or freeze until ready to use... -

we make playdough with gluten free flour at church for everyone to use, and at home we make some using peanut butter that's edible (peanuts aren't allowed at the church nursery) I usually bring my own spoon for my dish and try to keep an eye on the table to make sure people aren't using it anywhere but there, also I mark the dish "gluten free... -

yep, she is 4 and has been gluten free since October of last year. My other daughter is 2 and has been gluten free since May of 2004 so she is past the "adjustment" and also doesn't really remember eating gluten. -

My 4 year old has been having "food issues" lately, and pretty much didn't want to go anywhere (church, choir practice, friend's birthday's, ect.) because they were having food that she couldn't eat. I understood, but was worried about her socialization, I mean her dad, sister and I are cool and all, but she's gotta hang out with someone else.......right... -
ARCHIVED Replacing My Whole Kitchen
Smunkeemom replied to Smunkeemom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would love a whole new house, some how I doubt hubby will pony up the dough LOL -
I think my girls are still getting glutened, I have crossed off everything that I feed them and also everything they eat elsewhere, so I have come to the conclusion that my entire kitchen is making them sick (okay, just the dishes and pots and pans and that type of stuff) so, I am trying to make a list of everything I need so that I make sure that if...

ARCHIVED Lunch Suggestions
Smunkeemom replied to jackie4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The school should be able to let her use a fridge and microwave, esp. after you explain to them that she is on a doctor prescribed diet. If you are in the US, you might point out to them that according to the ADA, and also "no child left behind" they are required to provide accomidation for her diet, that gets you a fridge and microwave pretty quickly. (they... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Diaper Rash = Celiac?
Smunkeemom replied to hapi2bgf's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
if your baby is still in the mouthing stage I would say it's pretty likely that she got cross contaminated. If I were you I would have a gluten room, and not allow gluten anywhere else in the house, and then don't let the baby go in the gluten room (like the kitchen would be good, because what's a baby gonna do in the kitchen) everyone needs to wash their... -
ARCHIVED Daughters Friend Has Celiac
Smunkeemom replied to brendavid's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
that is such a really cool thing you are doing for her. I would like to suggest a few purse friendly candies (since there will always be a time when a celiac has to rely on eating solely what's in her purse) M & M's are good for this. I doubt I was much help. sorry. it really is awesome that you are doing this -

ARCHIVED Modified.....
Smunkeemom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Okay so I know that if the label says "modified food startch" the my girls can't have it unless I call, which means I just don't buy it, I assume that it's the same for modified "anything" startch, but I have heard someone comment that modified corn startch is different and that I don't have to check......... I really need to know what the deal is. ... -
ARCHIVED Background Heritage Question
Smunkeemom replied to CMCM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
wow. it's difficult to answer. It's my girls who have celiac, and other people in my family. My mother is Irish/Scotish, and that's the side the celiac is on, so I suppose that's the answer. -
ARCHIVED Problems With Diaper Rash = Celiac?
Smunkeemom replied to hapi2bgf's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
oh, and when I said really bad rash it was really bad, it would bleed, people thought I was abusing the kid by not changing her diaper until I saw the doctor about celiac, she said it's a normal thing when celiacs get glutened. Do you think your kid accidentally got some? or maybe got cross contaminated? my girls can have a full blown reaction from even a... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Diaper Rash = Celiac?
Smunkeemom replied to hapi2bgf's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Annika used to get really really bad rashes, but once she was gluten free they went away. Her doctor said that she wasn't absorbing her food right because of the damage in her intestines and that there was some stuff left in her poop that was irritating to skin (I don't remember the exact word for it, but it was some type of digestive acid) I just grossed...
