ARCHIVED Milk Question
Smunkeemom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
okay, I may be too paranoid, but this has been bothering me, if gluten is passed into breast milk (human) then wouldn't it be passed into cow milk (if they eat gluten)? I am seriously worried about this, I know that there is a big thing with "grain fed cows" now, and how they eat a lot of wheat and such, so can the gluten pass into thier milk? I assume... -
ARCHIVED Losing Too Much Weight Help!
Smunkeemom replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
can you have ensure? it's like adult pediasure, there are recipes on the pediasure page of how to make milkshakes, muffins ect. (you would have to modify them to make them gluten free though) also lots of statchy food can make you gain weight (potatoes ect.) -

Open Original Shared Link.. it's how we got Annika chubby again 3 cans a day plus reg food (gluten free reg food of course) we got WIC to pay for it since the dr. prescribed it, because it's expensive (something like $3 a can) There are about 6 flavors all gluten and lactose free, they taste best cold, or partially frozen, you can also use them instead... -

I know, I mentioned that there was a support group where I live and that I had been thinking of going, and my friend says "you have a support group for a food allergy?" I wanted to scream. I don't know how many times I have explained to everyone it's not an allergy!!!!!!! It's a chronic disease, and one with a difficult diet, and you need support for... -

you know you are a celiac mom, when in addition to "knowing your kids friends" you have to send over a notebook of gluten information, a bag of food, homemade playdough, homemade fingerpaints, and have a sit down meeting with other kids' parents, before every single play date and answer questions like "she can have sugar cookies right?. what about white bread... -
ARCHIVED Hi Looking For Some Input
Smunkeemom replied to lovemyboy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know if this helps any, but you may be able to get your local paper to do a story about your dayhome, you know and how you are trying to cater to children with a special diet and about what gluten free actually means, it's cheaper than running an advertisment, and you will get more publicity for your dayhome and also help with educating people about... -
Poppet I will keep your son in my prayers, and you as well, I know it's stressful when your child is sick, I really hope that you find out what is wrong so that you can help him. btw, I didn't really catch what some of that food was, it's always a little funny to me how people from different areas have different names for everyday stuff. I am just going...

ARCHIVED School Lunches
Smunkeemom replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I made it very clear to my daughter's school that I was doing them a favor by bringing in her breakfast (she only went half day) and that by law they should be providing her with gluten free food. I don't think there should be a problem at all with her using a fridge and microwave if she needs them, you might get a note from her doctor saying that this... -
There are some diseases that are related to celiac disease or celiac is related to them, I am not sure which way it goes, but my ped GI was telling me that in most of the children she sees that celiac disease is a secondary diagnosis, that they already have stuff like C.P, diabetes, and some other ones but I don't remember what they are, she said Annika was...

ARCHIVED Depressed Teen
Smunkeemom replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would suggest having her see a counselor, she may need someone to talk to, and the counselor may be able to help her see a need to get help for her depression. I know that when I was that age I didn't want to listen to my parents, esp. when I was depressed, seeing a person who is "outside the situation" may be very helpful. You might point out to her that... -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Grandparents
Smunkeemom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
you are being a good parent, you would do the same thing if their house had exposed wires or loaded guns on the coffee table, you are protecting your kids, maybe you can have them come over to see you, that way he doesn't miss out but you can pull the "my house, my rules" thing, and explain that he won't be going to their house until they will comply. -
ARCHIVED Chewable Vitamins For Children
Smunkeemom replied to mamaathome's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The last bottle of Scooby Doo vitamins we bought was gluten free, but I don't know if they are now or not, we have been getting some liquid vitamins from the health food store for the whole family, you mix like an ounce with juice in the morning, it seems to make us feel better than the chewables and the pills, the lady said something about more of the vitamins... -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Grandparents
Smunkeemom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
my husband has used that analogy before. "a peice of a cookie won't hurt them right?" " sure, why don't you put some arsenic on it, it will make it taste better" "no, I don't want to hurt them" "then keep cookies at least 40 feet from them and detox your hands before you come near my kids" LOL I think they got the point. -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Grandparents
Smunkeemom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would ask them if they had gotten toxic waste on their hands would they wash them or use alchohol gel? of course they would say that they would wash them, then you can begin the conversation about how gluten is literally toxic to someone with celiac disease. some people don't realize how serious it actually is, they think that it's an allergy but... -
ARCHIVED The Star Ledger, Newark, Nj
Smunkeemom replied to debmidge's topic in Publications & Publicity
It's not from the same paper, but I think it may say basically the same thing.......maybe.... anyway, I found this this morning and thought it could be what she (I am assuming) was talking about since a lot of the time the same articles get into different papers. ohOpen Original Shared Link -
I found when I was pregnant things went better when I ate 6 small meals rather than 3 large ones, some of my favorite snacks were, apples with peanut butter, celery with peanut butter, and tortillas with lunch meat and cheese. I think you can gluten free all of that, protien takes a while to digest and should be able to keep some of the hunger away. ...

he really wants to try the diet, but he is scared that he won't find anything to eat, I tried to tell him that we thought that when we had to put the girls gluten free, but they eat lots of good stuff. He had a dr. appt this week and they say he has gained 10lbs which means he is healing enough to get food asborbed which is great, I think I may try to...

ARCHIVED Safe Cheerios?
Smunkeemom replied to kimber's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Open Original Shared Link My girls really like these, they say they are a little sweet too. They look enough like Cherrrios to fool small children, but once they are about 2 you have to say "but they won't make you sick, and they are round, and they taste yummy" and all of that is true. -
it's pretty bad, they have been talking lately about removing his large intestine, he found a new doctor that is trying some new meds, and they think they are working, so I really hope that they do. He is pretty young to have to go into a surgery like that.

ARCHIVED Anyone Know If Quaker Oats Are Safe?
Smunkeemom replied to Kassidy's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was told that oats were forbidden on a gluten free diet, because it's so easy for them to get contaminated. also, you might check everything for malt flavoring too, it's one of the things that slipped me up in the beginning the doctor said "Kelloggs Rice Krispies are fine" but it turns out that they have malt flavoring in them which is made from barley... -
I have the book, but not for my girl's celiac disease, someone told me it would help with my husband's crohns disease. The things she said though about being able to "cure" celiac disease made me almost discount everything else she said. My husband has been going back and forth on whether or not he will try the diet, I think the book scared him really. I...
