ARCHIVED I Am So Confused :(
Smunkeemom replied to Laura--G's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would go ahead and do the biopsy to be sure, it's not too bad really. Could actually be less bad for your son since he is used to needles, and the IV is really the worst part of it. If his biopsy is negative, you might try him gluten free and see if he feels better anyway, it's not too bad, and I would assume that most of the stuff has been cut out... -
ARCHIVED I Am So Confused :(
Smunkeemom replied to Laura--G's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
One of my daughters had a weak pos. and the other a strong pos. they both then had biopsy. The one with the strong, had a lot of damage, the one with the weak had none. The one with the weak still had celiac disease although it wasn't "active", it has since "turned on" and we had to put her on a gluten free diet. I think if you are pos. you have... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Soy/dairy/gluten Free Recipes/foods?
Smunkeemom replied to kimber's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
you should check out the SCD diet, I know there is a webpage around somewhere with like 300 recipes, even though your child isn't on the diet, it is a gluten, soy, dairy, corn, ect. free diet. *goes to look for link* Oh here----->Open Original Shared Link hope that helps some, it helped me a ton. -
ARCHIVED Daughter's Depression And Meds
Smunkeemom replied to ERA's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am going to get a little personal now, I have GAD, and mild OCD, and I have suffered from depression before too. Cognitive therapy helped me more than any medication ever could, it's something to look forward to, not so much a "last chance", sometimes you can do the therapy and medication too. Drugs for psychiatric problems are tricky, what works for... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else With A Gasy Child?
Smunkeemom replied to JacobsMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Do you think the gluten free diet is causing the gas? My daughters were pretty gassy for a while but I had to modifiy their gluten free diets, I didn't realize how many gassy foods they were eating (like brocoli and cucumbers), they still have a little bit of a gas problem just because of all the veggies they eat, but we have been able to teach the 4 year... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Contamination, Scratching, And Dev. Delay
Smunkeemom replied to elfkin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think your kid is getting glutened. It's probably not you that is doing it either, but just to be sure triple check everything. He may still have symptoms for a while after you find the gluten source but don't worry things will get better gluten free. As far as the church nursery, I would talk to the director. Bring articles and studys about how bad... -
ARCHIVED Good Kids Chicken Fingers
Smunkeemom replied to emsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
a whole stick of butter, basically you are "frying" the chicken in it like you would in veggie oil. it should be enough that when melted it leaves like an inch or so of melted butter in the pan. it sounds fattening but it's not as bad if you use like Parkay, and also it may sound gross to some people but I assure you it's really really good. -
ARCHIVED New To All This
Smunkeemom replied to skipper30's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
it's hard to tell with little kids if they don't have symptoms. Blood tests won't work if the kids are gluten free, and aren't reliable in small children anyway, if your kids seem to be doing okay on the diet you have them on I would leave it. The doctors will most likely want you to put them on gluten for the tests, but like I said the tests aren't great... -

ARCHIVED Good Kids Chicken Fingers
Smunkeemom replied to emsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I make gluten free fried chicken strips, I make it just like I used to except replacing flour with Bob's red mill gluten free all purpose flour. Most people can't tell the difference except for my hubby (who isn't gluten free) and he says they taste better. I will post the recipe if you want, I cook them in the oven. what type of veggies do you use... -
ARCHIVED "de-glutening" A 10 Year Old
Smunkeemom replied to lonewolf's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am sorry that it's hard on him. My grandfather got diagnosed when he was 78, so he was pretty set in his ways too, what helped him was sitting down with me and writing down all his favorite foods and finding ways to make them gluten free. Your son is going through a rough time, patience is key, you sound like you are bending over backwards though. I would... -
ARCHIVED Mainstream gluten-free Yogurt?
Smunkeemom replied to Smunkeemom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
thank you, that is good to know. Thank all of you for helping I think I am going with Yoplait, it's readily available here and I like to support companies that don't hide gluten. As far as Stonyfieldf Farms, I am annoyed with their answer, not so much that they don't know but that they suggested "asking your doctor", how the heck would my... -
ARCHIVED Typical Symptoms In Young Kids?
Smunkeemom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Annika got sick really fast, she was fine at 9 months and then very sick by her 1st birthday, she threw up everything she ate, it didn't even look digested, it would come back up pretty much how it looked on her plate. She had fatty smelly diapers, and a bad bad rash all the time (even though I kept her clean), she seemed to have no energy, she would either... -
Is there like a thred with the rules for the board? I heard/read somewhere that we aren't allowed to link to pictures, does that mean we can't use img tags, or that we can't link to a url with a pic (like a photobucket account) I would like to put a link in my sig of my kids, but I really don't want to break the rules.

ARCHIVED How Do You Afford This?
Smunkeemom replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
just thought you might want to try sometime, I found out that if you boil cauliflower(sp?) just like you would potatoes and mash it with milk and butter it tastes just like mashed potatoes, I know it's kinda off topic but since you can't have potatoes I thought you might want to know, you know if you missed them or something, as opposed to just not liking... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Afford This?
Smunkeemom replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I actually hardly ever buy "gluten free food" I get some animal crackers for church, and some cereal, and every once in a while I get some microwave dinners (for weeks that are so busy that we would end up eating fast food anyway) I just gluten free whatever I cook anyway, sub cornstarch for flour, naked meat instead of breaded, corn tortillas instead... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Guard Software
Smunkeemom replied to celiacbaby's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I haven't used it, but have been thinking of getting it, so far I have just researched everything myself and kept a 3 ring binder, but since the delphi list alone is like 80 pages, my binder has grown to like 150, so my hubby is going to make me a data base and I am going to get a handheld computer for it. I can email you some of the stuff I have if it will... -
ARCHIVED Omg! She Did It!
Smunkeemom replied to Becky6's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
whoo hoo!!!!!!!!!!! You should throw a potty party, it doesn't have to be a big thing, just some gluten-free cookies and juice. I threw one for my 4 year old to celebrate her new health after going gluten free. I am so happy for you and your daughter -
ARCHIVED Disagree With Doctors
Smunkeemom replied to lovemyboy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
wow. I did not know that. It does make a lot of sense though, I am going to call my cousin her kid has lactose intolerance all of the sudden and is still sick off milk, I think she may need to have him checked out since celiac disease runs in our family.....wow. I never put that together before. You may have just helped out a 3 year old. Thanks. -
ARCHIVED Disagree With Doctors
Smunkeemom replied to lovemyboy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 4 year old is gluten free without doctor approval. My grandfather has celiac disease and my 2 year old almost died from undiagnosed celiac disease (the kept saying she had a stomach virus, and then they switched to that she was constipated even though she was having D everyday and still puking and lost 11 pounds in 3 weeks which is a ton when you only... -
ARCHIVED Happy Happy Shopping Time
Smunkeemom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have found 4 different grocery stores in my area now that carry gluten free food, no more shopping at the health food store for us!!!!!!!!!!!! Gluten free waffles for cheaper than the gluten-full counterparts, gluten free cake mixes, even gluten free bread at under $4 a loaf. I am so excited, it seems that gluten free really is going mainstream,... -
ARCHIVED I'm Afraid My Kitchen Will Be Toxic
Smunkeemom replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I try to keep my house as gluten-free as possible. We don't cook gluten meals at all, and any gluten snacks are eaten when the kids are away. After a while you don't really miss the gluten, sometimes you find out that the gluten-free stuff is actually better. My only other suggestion is to make a "gluten free special place" in the kitchen, with new... -
ARCHIVED Kids Getting Glutened Need Advice.....
Smunkeemom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My kids are getting gluten, I am not sure where, but I know it's not from me. They do go visit my in-laws who swear that the kiddo's are gluten-free over at their houses, but I am not so sure. I think they are getting gluten, they come home cranky, and distended tummies, and their poop is weird. I have ruled out every other possible place (like my mom... -
ARCHIVED Mainstream gluten-free Yogurt?
Smunkeemom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am having trouble finding gluten free mainstream yogurt. My daughter wants to eat yogurt for breakfast, and the gluten-free stuff from the health food store is too expensive to be a staple. It's like $2.50 for a little thingy of it. At the grocery store I found Yoplait for 50 cents for a larger size, but it says modified food starch and I can't seem to... -
ARCHIVED Omg Omg Omg!
Smunkeemom replied to cherie012's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
yeah. I get into that too. My husband has Crohns and my kids have celiac, and I have some type of IBS so we talk about poop at our house a lot. "How are you today?" "okay, my crohns is bothering me" "solid, or rhea?" "water rhea" "I will go get the immodium" it's a natural conversation for us, when other people figure that out...
