ARCHIVED Any Good Books Lately?
flourgirl replied to debmidge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Lots of great books and writers mentioned here. I also like Koontz so much better than King, and agree that Koontz gets better as he ages. I love the dog characters as much as the human ones. In my youth I read everything that Heinlein put out, I think I owned every book he ever wrote. Right after I sold my collection (a box full) in a garage sale, the... -
ARCHIVED Silly Question I Know But I Will Ask Anyway
flourgirl replied to Krystens mummy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your dentist may be able to answer the question about your temperal-mandibular joint (your jaw). Some clicking once is a while is normal, a lot is not. Your doctor would be able to help there, too. There is a syndrome that could be bothersome, but I don't have much info there. As far as joints clicking....some is normal, I guess. When I was younger I... -
ARCHIVED What Other Foods To Avoid?
flourgirl replied to scottyfeelsick's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Scottyfeelsick. I know exactly where you're coming from. I've been on the diet for 6 months and am just starting to feel "better". I'm not 100% yet, but gaining. It seemed like forever, but for most of that time it didn't matter if I ate or not, or what I ate, the pain was almost unbearable. I had a host of other symptoms as well as digestive that... -
ARCHIVED I Just Need Some Good Folks With celiac disease To Talk To.
flourgirl replied to Ashley's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Ashley. I'm certainly no expert, but I want to help. If you are still having extreme bloating, and it's not a weight issue....maybe it's time to take a good, close look at everything you are eating and being exposed to. Is there a chance that you are getting some trace amount to gluten somewhere? For me it was the Calcium tabs I was taking everyday... -
Hi J, It is my understanding that you can't actually "see" if there is villi damage, though there may be inflammation visible. I think that you need the biopsy to get results, and that there needs to be several biopsies taken as one area may be flattened and the area right next to it may not be. There is plenty of info. out there for your reading pleasure...

Ear Problems Associated With Celiac
flourgirl replied to twinsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi JulesH! I have had problems with ear infections all of my life. I had my tonsils out at the age of 2 in an attempt to stop all of the infections (they used to believe that somehow the tonsils caused this, as at the time they didn't understand the function of them), as well as chronic kidney infection. I've done the whole deal with tubes in the eardrums... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Two Months, Feeling Bad
flourgirl replied to mamasaidso's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi! I know just where you're coming from. When I started the diet, at first I thought I was doing better....tho' my energy level stayed bottomed out. I've been gluten-free since November, and have only been doing much better in the last 2 weeks or so. Balance problems are mostly better, until I get really tired (which still doesn't take a whole lot but... -
ARCHIVED Ouch...foot/calf Cramps.
flourgirl replied to the Swede Life's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used to get terrible cramps in my feet,...and legs and hands. I would wake in the night almost screaming, my toes would be crossed over and stuck. They would subside after a while of massaging until I could stand, and then walk it off. Sometimes my knees would lock up (really scary when driving; I used to have standard shift). Other muscle things... -
ARCHIVED Help My Squirrel Is Out To Get Me!
flourgirl replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Funny! Thanks for the laugh. We feed the birds, too, and garden. We love to bird watch. Our run-in with nature this year is a bear. We have to bring the bird feeders in at night because of him. So far he has trashed the neighborhood feeders, picnicked on trash waiting for pick up, left muddy footprints all around the garage and up to the front door... -
ARCHIVED Home From School, Again
flourgirl replied to OBXMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! It IS a tough call when your child is ill. You want to do all you can to make their lives easier. My own son had a lot of health issues.....wish I had known then what it was all about! My philosophy would have been the same, however. Unless he was running a fever, or could not be away from the bathroom, he had to at least make the effort and attempt... -
ARCHIVED When It Rains, It Pours
flourgirl replied to Ursa Major's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Ursa Major! I like the name, but the way. You have my prayers, for relief and for a cancellation that they'll give to you. I can commiserate completely! I blame Celiac for my mouth troubles. I've had 3 abcesses, 4 if you count the one a year ago. By the time I could get into a dentist, the root had broken in the gum and I lost the tooth. Happened... -
ARCHIVED Still Confused
flourgirl replied to Nan2N's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you want a really handy reference guide (no, it doesn't list "everything") but does list lots of things, give this book a try "Gluten Free Grocery Shopping Guide" by Matison & Matison. When I'm making out my grocery list, sometimes I check out the item. Of course, you have to re-check the ingrediants before you eat it, in case anything has changed... -
Hi! Sounds like you have plenty of damage to overcome! I did too. While inflamed, your body has had a hard time absorbing much of what it needs to be healthy, that's why so many biologic systems struggle and so much of your body get involved. It's not just your intestines. Anyway, the more damage, the longer it may take to feel better. I've been gluten...

Do you just want the down and dirty about symptoms? Or do you want like a life history with all of the years of doctor shoulder shrugs and guesses. misdiagnosis and strange cures? I'd be willing to "talk"....no bright lights and torture needed, I just need to know how much and what type of information you are looking for. Thanks.

Hi there! I know just how awful DH can be! Mine cleared up pretty quickly when I started the diet. I DO, however, get flair ups by taking Ibuprofen....or if I eat anything salty. We switched to kosher salt (no iodine) and that helps. I can't have any salty chips or snacks, tho' because I get those itchy blisters! You may want to watch out for those...

Hi!!!! I'm from the Martinsburg area. I know what you mean about not having support groups. That's why I like this forum so....this is my support group . If you are having "bumps", or a rash, especially an itchy burning rash anywhere alongside your slight intolerance to pasta, you may want to make certain that it is not Celiac. Sounds to me like it may...

ARCHIVED Avid Gardener Wondering Is There Anything To Watch For Gardening With Gluten?
flourgirl replied to toomuchagony's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know what you mean about bending, and getting tired and achy. Was a time not so long ago that I could work for hours, work all day. Matter of fact, until a year ago, when I wasn't on the job, I was helping my dad put in hay bales. I love to be busy! Now I get so disgusted...I work an hour and I have to stop. On a good day I'll get a couple of hours... -
ARCHIVED Avid Gardener Wondering Is There Anything To Watch For Gardening With Gluten?
flourgirl replied to toomuchagony's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi! Good to meet a fellow garden lover! Flowers (annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, any kind of flowers) are a passion of mine. I'm happiest when I'm playing in the dirt !!! As far as I know, there is no gluten worries to be found in plants, flowers, dirt, soil ammending products. I don't know for sure about pesticides and fertilizers, but I would... -
If you have options about another doctor, that would be my first choice. I found a female doc that I just adore. She admits when she doesn't have enough info., and does not get offended when I bring books and information to make suggestions about what tests to do and when. She has sent me to "specialists" who, in my opinion were a waste of time. THE area...

Because Calcium is one of the things we malabsorb with intestinal damage, we all should be taking supplements, at least in my opinion. As we heal, we'll absorb more, and I hope that means a halt to this part of the mess. My teeth are a wreck right now. Have been losing enamal for a number of years. Had one dentist tell me that I brushed too much and too...

Hi again. Iodine can be found in lots of seafoods...watch those, and any foods processed with lots of salt. I find that I have to avoid anti-inflammatories; like Ibuprofen. Those make me blister up. The longer I'm on the gluten-free diet, though, the blisters are fewer and smaller. Hopefully soon it'll be only a bad memory. Keep on healing!

ARCHIVED Dr. Suzanne Lewis & Celiac Disease Center
flourgirl replied to Dolcenotte's topic in Doctors
I think you are fortunate to be seeing an associate of Peter Green! He has a book published about Celiac Disease. I would advise anyone to read it! I don't believe that there are many out there who have a real grasp about this disease and all of it's manifestations, so I think you are going to a great place. Wish we all had those options. Good luck. -
I don't know where they get the idea that DH is limited to such places. Many of us have had it almost any place. Mine started on the calf of one leg, soon I had it on both legs, belly, arms, within days it was also on the tops of my feet, bottom of my feet, hands, neck and face. Before it started going away I had it absolutely everywhere top to bottom...

No answers here. After dropping so much weight pre-diagnosis, I got used to being very thin, and I confess I enjoyed the small size. Now that I'm gluten-free, in the last month Im blowing up like a balloon. I can't say that I overeat, and I do get exercise. My muscle tone is finally shaping back up. For the first time in my life I'm accumulating fat...

ARCHIVED Frustrated And In Denial
flourgirl replied to lmtnarny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi! Sorry to hear about your suffering! Many of us have been in your shoes....you've come to a good place for help, answers and commiseration. I'm confused about your doctor's attitude. Is it because you have no insurance, or do you have insurance that does not cover the cost of tests? In any case.....money should not even be a consideration when it...
