ARCHIVED People Who Think They Might Have Celiac
cdog7 replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Weird. Once in a blue moon someone will tell me they wonder about some nagging symptom, but they're obviously not too bothered or they'd have done it already. Usually I just acknowledge that yeah, sure, maybe that's a gluten thing -
Arrgh, I feel your pain! It really is maddening, and scary. I encountered a lot of this kind of ignorance from doctors when I was trying to get diagnosed, and honestly it still enrages me. If it is possible to switch doctors, I think it might be worthwhile. It's of course worth trying to get a diagnosis, but you and I know how difficult that is made for...

ARCHIVED How To Cope With "not Knowing"?
cdog7 replied to Gluten Glutton's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
True, most of the more groundbreaking celiac research has only gone on in the past few years! So someone who went to medical school and established a practice during that time most likely didn't learn about it, unless they really went out of their way. Like you said, it's been off the radar screen, and hopefully that's starting to change. Recently I saw... -
ARCHIVED How To Cope With "not Knowing"?
cdog7 replied to Gluten Glutton's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can relate to this! I tried very hard to get a diagnosis, in part because I had been so horribly sick for months that I was missing work and barely functioning. Other people in my life needed an explanation as much as I did. My biggest obstacles were bad doctors -
ARCHIVED Do You Have Friends Who Do Gluten-Free But Not Seriously?
cdog7 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OMG I so relate to this. I have a friend, who is a great person, but she never takes her 'gluten sensitivity' seriously at all. She's never looked into it further than what her doctor initially told her, never questioned her blood test results, always been 100% convinced it's no big deal and she can eat whatever she wants. Every time we go out I think she... -

ARCHIVED 'gluten Intolerance' In The Long Term
cdog7 replied to cdog7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks, both of you, I appreciate that. Since I do react to both wheat and barley for sure, maybe that's an indication that it is celiac, or early stages of it? I do hope both conditions become better understood, both in research and by everyday doctors! Well, don't we all. That actually does make me feel better hearing that being gluten-free reduces... -
ARCHIVED 'gluten Intolerance' In The Long Term
cdog7 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Background: A couple years ago I was suddenly horribly ill all the time. All the classic celiac symptoms, with the only exception being that I gained a lot of weight fast and was ravenously hungry all the time. I had chronic fatigue, chronic joint pain, brain fog, bloating, diarrhea (you know, our special bulky kind). My mother has celiac disease. Seems... -
ARCHIVED When A Loved One *might* Be Celiac
cdog7 posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm just wondering how far you should go to try to get someone you love tested, when you suspect they might be celiac, but their potential symptoms are not totally obvious. I'm celiac and have been gluten-free for years, and while I'm all for spreading knowledge, I also don't want to become pushy or unrealistic, or impose my circumstances on others needlessly... -
Thanks again, Skylark! This is immensely helpful.

@Skylark, but you've found probiotics helpful? It angers me how almost no trustworthy information is available to us on these matters, as far as the enzyme issue goes. I searched and searched for something explaining why they don't work, some study showing they are either effective or not, and only found sites that seem connected to their sales.. I...

Thanks, yeah I certainly don't expect anything on the market to 'cure' me or allow me to eat gluten! But I'm just looking for any possible way to increase my 'safety net' such as for those occasions when I dine out or share a meal with others. It seems to me there's almost no way to truly ensure zero gluten ever gets into your food

ARCHIVED Shampoos, Soaps, Etc.
cdog7 replied to dkelm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I've heard different sides of this -
Hello folks. I've heard a lot about how beneficial probiotics and digestive enzymes can be for us, but I'm not sure I'm taking the right ones, or how often I should take them. Are there certain types that are especially beneficial for celiacs (maybe even help out in cases of accidental gluten ingestion)? I purchased an enzyme labeled "Gluten Defense"...

ARCHIVED Did You Have A Trigger That Started Your Symptoms?
cdog7 replied to afreeclimber74's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In my case, my symptoms developed while going through my divorce proceedings. My ex had been abusive, and I was terrified he'd try to do something nasty (nastier?) before it was done - I just wanted out. So I always figured it was stress-triggered. But it's interesting that you mentioned Cipro, as I do remember having a bad infection about a year before my... -

ARCHIVED Fevers With Gluten Reaction
cdog7 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello all! I'm one of those whose blood test was negative, but endoscopy showed some 'light damage', and the gluten-free diet resolved all my many debilitating symptoms. I took this to mean I should stay gluten-free! Both my docs agreed I'm gluten-intolerant but weren't definite about saying it was officially celiac -
It's really easy to get diagnosed 'gluten intolerant' (and IBS for that matter) by a doctor who is essentially throwing up their hands. In other words, this doctor does not know if you have celiac or not, because the current tests for it are really only helpful when positive (negative=inconclusive, not you definitely don't have it). But all they can be sure...

Wow, thanks everyone for the responses! I only just now saw most of them, haha. Yeah, our office is small, but a part of a larger company. We do have one HR manager here, but she mainly handles paperwork

Thank you, Sandsurfgirl! That's just what I needed to hear. Sometimes I just think I'm going crazy, like overreacting, because of course that's how these people harassing me seem to feel. I really do think they have no concept of this disease, though I've tried explaining it in the past
-
Trouble is, I've embraced it and laughed with them in the past, and it's just escalated. In other words, I think it did pave the way to becoming a doormat. Turning the other cheek just egged them on somehow, maybe I'm just not a good enough actor. Anyway, I can't go on being a doormat, however I got here. But I do still appreciate the idea! I think that tactic...

Thanks, Tiffany. I think at least one person won't do it again now. I talked to him and he was very apologetic. Now if only the main offender would stop! But I suppose a lot of offices have one of those.. I just couldn't take feeling ganged up on! It's stressful enough in here..
-
I have no idea how I'm supposed to be anymore. My office has gone from just ordering lots of pizza and bagels for the staff (which I was fine with, I just couldn't eat them obviously), to actually teasing me repeatedly about not being able to eat with them. It's not like I've been whining or trying to deprive them of anything, but they do know I'm a celiac...

I lost about 20 lbs. after going gluten-free. My experience with doctors was similar - they would not consider celiac because I had gained weight. I think I gained weight because I felt like I was starving literally all the time, and would eat and eat and eat (and have about 6-8 bouts of monkeys flying out my butt every day). They only grudgingly let me take...

So Potbelly Sandwich just added an allergen statement on their website (www.potbelly.com), on their nutrition info page, which includes a listing of which menu items contain "wheat (gluten)". The chili supposedly has none, but I've eaten it a couple times now and both times felt like I had a gluten reaction. Anyone know of any chili recipe that contains...
