I tried Lomotil last month to try to get the diarrhea under control. I tried it for a couple of weeks with no luck. But then again, I was taking milk products at the same time. Should I try it again without milk? The doctor today also said to cut out all sugar. I am so scared now about the dr. mentioning refractory celiac disease that I am desperate...

Just came back from an appt with my gastro specialist. He is sending me to a celiac specialist on August 18/04. Basically, I have permanent diarrhea which will not respond to the gluten-free diet. He is now discussing refractory celiac disease. From everything that I have read, it does not sound good. I am now scared....... Has anyone's dr. discussed...

ARCHIVED Alcohol
Canadian Karen replied to XoHeatherxO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I did have problems, but since have found out why..... See, I love my beloved Canadian Bloody Caesar, which consists of Clamato Juice, vodka, worsteshire sauce and celery salt. I have just recently discovered that Clamato Juice is not gluten free - so all this time, I have been feeding my body unknowingly with gluten..... I almost cried when I found... -

Canadian Karen replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks Carrie! Maybe I will try just maybe 10 chips or so, if I have a reaction, then I know I can't feast on a whole bag!!! Cross-contamination sucks, eh? Karen -
ARCHIVED Bacterial Overgrowth
Canadian Karen replied to celiac3270's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That is quite interesting, celiac3270, thank you for that! I too have continued to have symptoms (permanent diarrhea, bloating, cramps, etc. etc.) even though I have been on the diet for 1 1/2 years. I go back to my gastro this Wednesday, and he has already set up an appt with the "Celiac guru" the ultimate Celiac expert and St. Michael's Hospital here... -

ARCHIVED Anxiety Of Stomach Aches
Canadian Karen replied to pogirl1786's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi. I know exactly how you are feeling..... There have been about 3 or 4 times where my flare ups have been so intense and painful, that I literally thought I was going to die, that this is it, cancer has set in from years of this disease going undiagnosed..... I can remember one particularly bad one, where I had just had my second daughter, she was... -
ARCHIVED What Is Xanthan Gum?
Canadian Karen replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks Terri-Anne! I have a "Bulk Barn" close to me that I can go to. I looked in my health food store but didn't see it. The hardest thing for me is finding the time for the baking - when I get home from work, with four kids, there is basically no "spare time" until they go to bed and then I just flop from exhaustion. You know though, I notice you... -
ARCHIVED Coffeemate
Canadian Karen posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am attempting to go dairy free again, and was wondering is Coffeemate dairy free? I just can't stand drinking tea with no milk - Coffeemate I can handle and I know it is gluten free, but is it dairy free? Thanks! Karen -

ARCHIVED Excessive Gas
Canadian Karen replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Burdee, Sounds like you are really on the right track!! The last time I went to my gastro specialist, he did suggest I cut out dairy for 10 days to see if there was a difference. I noticed no change at all, so I went back on the milk (which I absolutely adore, I drink a ton of the stuff, always have, my Mom used to joke that she needed to buy a... -

ARCHIVED Excessive Gas
Canadian Karen replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What is casien? I have read it here quite often but have never heard of it. Is it an ingredient in something? Thanks! Karen -
One of the most prevalent symptoms I have is excessive gas, belching. There are some days where I am belching almost constantly. It even makes my throat and esophagas sore. I even get a pain in my back between my shoulder blades where it feels like the gas gets caught, and it can be quite painful. Also, when I am at work, after lunch, I have to sneak...

I noticed in some of the recipes posted call for xanthan gum.... I have never hear of it. What is it and where can it get it from? Thanks! Karen

ARCHIVED Tmi Question
Canadian Karen replied to kerri124's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi. I can only think that it had to be something you ate. Do you remember eating or drinking anything that was orange. The reason I ask this is that whenever I have the blue KoolAid or drink any kind of grape drink, the next day, my stools are blue. Weird, eh? Also, mine are quite often mucousy. With celiac, that is quite common. Hope this helps... -

Hi. I thought I would share my experience of what happened during my last pregnancy. I have celiac disease, I also have hypothyroidism and anemia. During my last pregnancy (twin pregnancy), my thyroid levels and iron levels kept going all over the dial. My family dr. didn't know what was happening and we couldn't control them. Finally, after going...
