  1. Oh, I'm concerned only with the curve. I know on normal charts he was considered obese as a one-year-old. On the breastfed chart, he was in average range (if at the upper end). Again, it's definitely all about the curve here--whichever one we use, he's dropped.
  2. I'm glad you found your GI--he sounds wonderful! And it sounds like your son has improved a lot under his care, too! Sorry to hear that your pedi was so unhelpful. I did read that 2 inches is normal, and appreciate that. (I guess the drop in both curves is the problem.)
  3. That's interesting! (I'm hypothyroid, but under treated, I gain weight--I didn't realize it was different in kids.) They tested for many things back then, and I'll have to check on thyroid. When we go back for the weight check next month, we will ask for a complete thyroid panel along with everything else. Thank you! My son is probably around the 10th...
  4. They didn't do a bone growth x-ray. The hope was that he found his curve last year. But, this year, it's been pretty apparent he's just not growing a lot. (I think he grew only two inches?) I read about that--that's one way to determine if might just be a late bloomer? There is some evidence of that in the family (my dad was 6'1", but was shorter than his...
  5. No he wasn't tested. They made it sound like there was only a test for lactose intolerance. Would these other issues also contribute to delayed growth?
  6. Hi--I have posted before about my son (in 2010), and the issues seem to be coming up again. Does anyone know whether extended breastfeeding (and I mean until age 5) can actually cause endoscopies and blood work to appear normal? My son nursed until he was a bit over 5. He had dropped off his growth curve slowly but surely from age 2.5 on. He had blood...
  7. Oh, that's interesting. I was negative for Test #2 on that list, but Test #1 was not run. Thanks for that information!
  8. I don't know about Hashimoto's testing (just that my doc said I did NOT have autoimmune thyroiditis--however that was determined). But, I do know a bit about chronic hives. I had them (for the second time) from about October 2010 until October 2011. Ultimately, the only drugs that worked were a combination of zyrtec and a zantac each day. Going cold turkey...
  9. Thank you, everyone. For now, we're going to go with her saying she feels better and notices less malodorous gas. She requires that no one eat her favorite barbecued tofu in front of her (or even take her to that restaurant since she refuses to make do on rice and beans when there). Otherwise, her favorite Thai food place has a gluten-free menu. And, I...
  10. Hello, all. I've been following topics here for a while since we know that something bothers members of the family--whether it's actually gluten or nightshades or just dairy, we're not entirely sure. Anyway, our 9yo has had bad stomach pains off-and-on for several years, and off-and-on constipation since she started solid foods. We thought it was bananas...
  11. Hi, I'm sorry you're going through this! I have chronic hives, too, though not as long as you. I've had them since October 2010, and the previous time was in 2003 (for about 4-5 months). I am hypothyroid--though, supposedly just postpartum thyroiditis. Thankfully, the blood work for everything was normal. I was "diagnosed" with IBS back in 1994 (when I was...
  12. I wondered, too, about the timing. Although, today, the symptoms are pretty bad though tolerable (no gluten, but no Claritin yesterday). I did have a biopsy of the original hive (the derm. thought it was pityriasis rosea, but it wasn't acting like that. Anyway, she biopsied two actual hives, themselves, and they were found to be...hives. I haven't seen any...
  13. Good tip about the Zyrtec. I was just told to take Claritin back in 2003 (the first time this happened), and I kind of went back to it. It's odd how they seem to be getting worse (and seem to come around 8:30pm every day, regardless of whether I've taken Claritin yet that day or not). The more I've read up on this, the more I doubt the allergist will be able...
  14. So sorry to hear about all that constipation! Aside from going gluten-free, I would recommend going dairy-free. I know of other kids who've had constipation issues and they've cleared up after dairy is eliminated. (My daughter, to a much milder extent, has constipation from dairy, most likely lactose intolerance--and we've know this since she first had cheese...
  15. Very interesting! Thank you for all that information. I'm getting a new remedy from the homeopath, going on Day 2 of no gluten (my PCP was very much in favor of that, says she sees lots of cases of gluten intolerance that aren't celiac), and have an allergist appointment on Monday. (Sadly, the hives are too bad to cut out the antihistamine, so I hope the...
  16. Hi, I've posted here before about my now (almost) 6yo who had low total IgA, and went on to have a negative endoscopy. He's still little, but it's thought that he's on his own 5th %ile curve (he hasn't dropped off his curve, fortunately). Anyway, I have had hives since October with some mild lip angioedema as well. When the hives started, I had started...
  17. A friend posted this great article on FB a while back: Open Original Shared Link It talks about how to feed one's infant (breastfed infant). I think it might be helpful because most of the foods are whole foods (not grains). FWIW, with #2, he started with avocado, and spit up/threw up pretty much everything else for a long time. He probably wasn't quite...
  18. Try Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. We made the "Gluten Freedom" cupcakes when we had kids over with dairy, gluten, and egg allergies. They do call for a 1/2 cup of rice flour, but you could substitute in more almond and quinoa flour (almond would probably be more tasty). I read on another site that millet flour is not a good choice (but that's probably...
  19. I've felt better overall without gluten, but don't typically feel worse when I go back to eating it. I don't know if that makes sense. I don't have certain painful intestinal/GI symptoms when I'm not eating gluten (but those symptoms don't happen all the time anyway and can be caused by corn, bananas, etc.). I have more energy for exercise without gluten...
  20. My son had an endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy in June (at Children's in Boston, where they have a lot of experience doing these). He was 100% negative--there was nothing to indicate anything wrong with him. At the follow-up appointment they said that he wasn't THAT small, and if his growth dropped, to see an endocrinologist in a few years (i.e., he could be...
  21. Open Original Shared Link My kids like this, too, but tend not to like it with too much cayenne. We also use one can of black beans only, and tend to add a leafy green like spinach, chard, or kale (either mixed in or on the side). We've had it with gluten-free tortillas, and now that daiya cheese is more widely available perhaps that as well. It also...
  22. Thank you so much for your response. The Children's GI doc definitely wants him to see an immunologist before doing the endoscopy, and she's even finding us one over there, so they should be well coordinated. Since our son is almost 5, we're guessing that the vaccine thing was ok (though, he reacted badly to all that he's had so far--did you find that?...
  23. Hello, I posted a few months ago, and have a new question. My son (almost five) who has low total IgA (45.6, range is 66-120) had his total IgG also tested by the GI. As it turns out, his total IgG is around 460 (reference 600-1000). They want him to see a pediatric immunologist before going forward with an endoscopy (they may well still do one, but...
  24. I really like the Daiya cheese. We've used the cheddar and Italian blend. I like it much better than Follow Your Heart. My kid who isn't lactose intolerant (like the rest of us are) says he thinks it's just as good as "cow cheese". We made a gluten-free, mac & cheese on Friday using this cheese, some almond milk, garlic powder, onion powder, and...
