  1. At my Episcopalian church, it took us a few weeks to figure it out, but this is what we did: I have my own wafers (I bring gluten-free crackers from home) I have my own chalice for the wine Father blesses my gluten-free stuff at the same time as the gluten wafers and wine When communion rolls around, I take the wafer from the plate instead of having...
  2. Yes, I do that too, even to my semi-friends. Saying you're allergic to something puts a different picture in the waiter's head, and then he'll take you more seriously. (Being only 23, being taken seriously is a problem for me). "Allergic" means lawsuit if you screw up - "I'll get sick" means later, something the waiter doesn't have to worry about. ...
  3. 2 important points have been made here: 1) that the early 20s-early 30s is a selfish age, with friends, significant others, or anyone It's so true. So many of my "friends" want to go out late to beer bars, or go for pizza - the other night, I left them early because they wanted to go to Waffle House, and despite my telling them that that restaurant...
  4. Jeannine, can you tell us what you did to lose your 16 lbs? Was it simply not eating gluten anymore, or did you cut out all carbs for awhile? I too am trying not to feel bad - I'm overweight from disease, not just eating lots of junk food, but it's still hard. I don't really eat sugar - maybe a handful of M&Ms in the afternoon, or a small piece of dark...
  5. I'm in the same boat. I actually gained 50 lbs before the doctors realized something was really wrong with me. I've just been trying to eat fewer carbs, more veggies and fruits, and get to the gym at least 3x a week. I have some hand weights I use when I'm watching TV - they're only 3lbs, so I go for higher reps (like, 75). I also try not to sit around...
  6. Eating mini-meals is the best advice I ever got. Eating every 3 hours or so keeps the blood sugar levels more stable, so you don't get mood swings, and you can make each mini-meal as big or little as you need. Obviously, my 3 meals are bigger than the snacks, but, say, my afternoon snack is WAY bigger than my evening snack, because the afternoon is when...
  7. Wow, thanks so much for the replies already! Yes, it's very frustrating to read about others who can't gain any weight when I'm trying so hard to lose weight... Does anyone have any work-out/food combos that have worked for them? I usually do about 20 minutes of light cardio a day (power walking), with hand-weight "training" once or twice a week. ...
  8. Eventually you'll have to go off the Dapsone, and then you'll be able to tell if you've been accidentally glutenated by the rash. Mine appears 30-45 minutes after I've eaten something with gluten in it, but my rash itches so that's how I notice it. I would say to just keep an eye on your most common DH sites after eating something questionable. Some people...
  9. YES the heat can affect DH. Try to cool your body down and keep the affected places from getting excessively sweaty (mostly for knees and elbows). Hope this helps... And remember, Egypt is a dry heat, so you may not have any problems...
  10. Yes, and remember that stress does funny things to ones' body. During finals, I always have a bit of DH outbreak that goes away when I turn in the last paper. Also, heat can make it worse - sweat getting into the creases on your knees & elbows, etc.
  11. Yes, DEF. get thee to a dermatologist! I agree that DH doesn't usually stay so localized, but everyone is different. The usual (and only) drug prescribed for DH is Dapsone, which clears it up right away. But if you can make the cream work for you, I would stick with the cream - Dapsone can have some really negative effects if there's no gluten in your...
  12. Eating out in Tally: * La Fiesta (on Appalachee Parkway) is safe for those with only Celiac. Stick to the corn stuff (chips, tortillas, etc). Ask if anything is breaded before you order it, they're up front with you. Tell them you're allergic to wheat, and that nothing you are served must have touched anything wheat. I've never had any problems there...

    ARCHIVED What If?

One of my symptoms is depression. It was never officially diagnosed, but whenever I had gluten I would feel like I wanted to kill myself (emotionally, not physically), that no one cared or understood, etc. The last time I was accidentally gluteneted I laid on the couch all day and couldn't stop crying. So yes, it is entirely possible your depression symptoms...
  14. Pete, It's good to know there are decent men out there who are also Celiac. I myself am 23 years old and had enough trouble dating before my diagnosis, and now I'm even more nervous about trying to date anyone. The last date I went on was to a bar, so no problem cause I had a margarita, but I explained to the guy that I was allergic to beer (since...
  15. Seeing a therapist has done wonders for me. I was diagnosed a mere 2 months before I moved 1,000 miles away from the support of my family to attend graduate school - talk about your pizza temptations!!! I remember laying on the couch one day after an accidental glutenation and being unable to stop crying (gluten affects my mind by making me depressed -...
  16. I'm already a bit of an abnormality, as my Celiac symptoms were always strictly skin-related (DH like you wouldn't believe!). I was VERY lucky to not have the gastro symptoms so common with most Celiacs. In relation to this, I actually GAINED 50 pounds before they diagnosed me. (We realized there was a problem when I was exercising 6 hours a week and...
  17. I was having some of the same symptoms with artificial sweeteners - you said you cut out sugar, but it might be worth a double check that you're cutting out artificial sweeteners too.

    ARCHIVED Feet?

One thing I've found that triggers my DH is artificial sweeteners. It took me a long time to figure this one out, but since cutting out everything with an artificial sweetener (including diet soda ) the rash has significantly declined. And yes, I get them on my feet too - the best thing when you have a new breakout on your feet is to try to wear sandals...
  19. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I took it with me for the 6 hour trip home on the airplane and could NOT put it down! And she has written several sequels, each as good as the first (a rarity in and of itself!). She truly is a master storyteller, playing with words in a subtle but funny way, great characters, and vivid backgrounds. It's about Claire who...
  20. Also, you might want to consider going to see a therapist or counselor. You are losing an entire way of life, and you're going to have to allow yourself to mourn it without wallowing. Eating gluten-free didn't start to get easier until I went to see someone - even just to talk to someone who will just listen, you know? It does get easier, and more...
  21. I totally know what you mean by not getting support from your family. I'm a 23 year old grad student, and was diagnosed 2 months before I left for grad school 1,000 miles away from home. My parents didn't really have time to adjust to my new diet, but they weren't really interested in learning about it while I was home. (My dad thought I was making it up...
  22. Hey guys, Taylor found me on Facebook this morning and sent me the link to check out the board here. I'm so excited to see so many other Celiacs - I'm the only one in my family, and I don't personally know anyone else who has to deal with this, so I can't wait to meet all of you. I moved here from northern VA for grad school about 2 months after I was diagnosed...
  23. DH usually shows up faster - my DH pops up within 30 minutes (which is handy, as I don't eat too much of the bad stuff!) I was told by my doctor that it is possible to have DH and not have the Celiac gene. I was diagnosed purely through the skin biopsy, nothing internal, and since I've been gluten-free for almost a year now, they don't want to go messing...
