ARCHIVED Does Dh Always Equal Celiac?
jparsick84 replied to GravStars's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I was told by an ignorant doctor that DH doesn't mean Celiac. However, the brilliant dermatologist who diagnosed me (took one look at my skin and said "I think you have DH. Let's do a biopsy to find out!") told me that DH=Celiac. He might have just been saying this so I would accept the gluten-free lifestyle for life, but since eliminating gluten, wheat... -
ARCHIVED Chicken Bouillon Cubes
jparsick84 replied to Amanda C.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you're a poor college kid like me, Swanson's beef and broths are both gluten-free and affordable. That's pre-made broth, though, not bullion. -
ARCHIVED Berry Pebbles
jparsick84 replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The new Berry Pebbles is NOT gluten-free...I checked the last time I was at the store and was rather disappointed. On the up side, if you're ok with oats Kix cereal seems to be ok. I've been eating it for about a week now with no reaction, but it does have oat flour. -
ARCHIVED Stores In Williamsburg, Va
jparsick84 replied to sander60tx's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Yes, Ukrop's is really good about gluten-free stuff. And Busch Gardens is really good about letting you bring your own food into the park (the whole family-friendly image). And if you go to Busch Gardens, make sure to take in some of the shows - they're really spectacular! -
Hey, I just wanted to see how many other Celiac librarians were out there. I'm actually a MLS student, but will be graduating on December 13, 2008. I know sometimes it can be really challenging in our field. This winter, I got sick at work (public library) because someone brought in a cake and left it on the staff "eating" table and some crumbs must have...

ARCHIVED Does The Spouse Really Understand
jparsick84 replied to Mally-bug's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Being the second autoimmune disease in the family, I have to say I was expecting more support on my issue. Nearly every male in my family has diabetes so everyone understand the No Sugar with diabetics. But I think the issue with Celiac disease is that it's just too hard for them. If one of the diabetics accidentally gets a plate with a few sugar grains... -
ARCHIVED Baked Lays Potato Chips - Are They Gluten Free?
jparsick84 replied to Emilysmomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is true. While I've never had a problem with the regular potato chips, Cheetos, or Fritos, I did buy a bag of Baked Lays the other day and got sick. When I finished the bag a week later (wanting to double check if that was it), I did have a reaction but only a weak reaction (i.e., just a few bumps on my elbow instead of bumps all over my feet and rump... -
ARCHIVED Did I Do The Right Thing?
jparsick84 replied to onelildream's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The best advice I ever got was "If it hurts, don't do it!" I was diagnosed DH (just skin biopsy, no internal tests) in Virginia, but when I moved to Florida and tried to find a doctor, they told me that a DH diagnosis doesn't mean I have Celiac (untrue, by the way - if you have DH, you have Celiac disease. DH is a symptom of Celiac disease). They also... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Guy From Tallahassee Fl
jparsick84 replied to CeliacMe's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yes, I think there's still interest. It may be hard to rustle up people during the summer, but I know of at least 5 Celiac students at FSU, so maybe we should plan a date once the students come back to town? And if anyone just wants to get together for dinner one night this summer, PLEASE contact me! (I'm dying for some Outback...) ~ Jennifer -
ARCHIVED To Date A Celiac
jparsick84 replied to darlindeb25's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thou shalt keep the bread basket far away from my plate at restaurants. Thou shalt ask before cramming your face if eating pizza/fried chicken/beer/<insert favorite gluten item> in front of me hurts my feelings. Thou shalt not complain how long it takes at the grocery store to find gluten-free foods. Thou shalt use "Soooo...I brushed... -
ARCHIVED Depression, Gluten, And Work: Connection?
jparsick84 replied to Ashley's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with what everyone else has said. Ultimately it's your decision, but being so young, it would be easier for you to change jobs. If it were just the hands washing issue, you could probably get away with wearing gloves at work, but if the smell of the waffle cones is giving you a headache...you can't really take an oxygen tank to work. (Well, you... -
ARCHIVED A New Weight Loss Support/accountability Thread
jparsick84 replied to lonewolf's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This sounds gross, but when I'm craving salty stuff, I'll shake a little salt into my palm and lick it off (just like a tequilla shot). I'll wait a minute, see if I'm still craving it - if so, another small shake. If not, then yay! I subdue the craving without the calories...Strange, but effective. Of course, I have low blood pressure, so this is safe... -
ARCHIVED Packing Gluten-free Lunches Wearing Me Down
jparsick84 replied to dbmamaz's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is SUCH a great idea! -
I've found that making my own Chinese food at home is actually better than any store. Sunbird makes little spice packages that help make your meal taste like "the real thing" so you might want to look into making your own Chinese food. I've been making fried rice for a year now, and just tried making egg drop soup last month. Last week, I tried lo mein...

ARCHIVED Post Fruity Pebbles?
jparsick84 replied to LovelyLisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
While I have had a terrible reaction to Trix cereal, Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles are both ok with my system. -
There's a few things to remember, Amelia: 1) People at this age (20s) are selfish, and there's nothing you can do about it. I went through almost exactly the same thing as you did - diagnosed, then off to school. Only in my case, it's grad school, and all my classes are online so I don't ever actually meet anyone. On the plus side, I have my OWN...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Eat Honeycom Cereal?
jparsick84 replied to krisb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm ok with oats - the problem here is the fact that they share lines with wheat. Anything that is said up-front to share lines with wheat I ALWAYS have a bad reaction. One way you can test if it's the oats is to get the Rob's Red Mill Gluten-Free oats. They have been harvested and made in a dedicated factory, and I ate an entire bowl the other day and... -
ARCHIVED Explaining Celiac Disease
jparsick84 replied to Sillyyakdidi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, I'm surprised at some of the responses on here! In my experience, if I tell someone I'm allergic to wheat, they take me much more seriously than saying that I have an autoimmune disorder. After I tell them I'm allergic to wheat, the next question is usually "Oh, that sucks! So what happens when you eat wheat?" I smile grimly and tell them that... -
ARCHIVED Tallahassee/north Florida
jparsick84 replied to might's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Is the Tally support group meeting through the summer? I haven't heard anything from anyone and just want to make sure I'm not being left out of the loop... Are any of the students in Tally for the summer? I'd love to meet up with you if you are! -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Depression [?]
jparsick84 replied to Eugene's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Feeling depressed is one of my symptoms. I can tell when I've been accidentally glutenated because I start to despair that my life will never get better, and then I can't stop crying. One day it was so bad I couldn't get off the couch the whole day - just laid there in a daze, trying to pull myself out of the funk but not being able to. This is a big... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Dealing With This While In College?
jparsick84 replied to kera87's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm a grad student, and have less time to cook than ever! I tend to do all my cooking on one day of the week, and make large portions so that I will have leftovers during the week. Chili, pepper steak with rice, a large cut of meat with potatoes and broccoli (cut the meat before you put it in the fridge though, or it's way harder to portion it out later... -
ARCHIVED I'm A Weird Celiac - Gained Weight?
jparsick84 replied to jparsick84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes! Since going gluten-free, I've discovered I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners - which includes sugar-free gum, diet soda, and Splenda. I'm sort of hoping that once my gut heals I might be able to tolerate them again later, but I'm not holding my breath. Have you noticed the reaction with other artificially sweetened things? -
I have had my gallbladder out. I was 19 when I started having chest pains, and thankfully my dr. remembered that they can sometimes be linked to having gallstones. It is a laproscopic procedure, which means they just make some tiny cuts in your stomach and use small cameras and teeny clippers to cut it out. It is also just a day procedure - I left the...

ARCHIVED If You Could Have One Celiac Reference Book, What Would It Be?
jparsick84 replied to Breila's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Jax's "The Gluten-Free Bible" Seriously, it has saved my social life more than once. -
I know that we're all supposed to be positive, as it will help us with our new outlook on life, but sometimes I just SO resent this disease!!! I just don't feel like I should have to eat before an event with food. No one else has to do it, not even my diabetic brother, and my family still doesn't get the whole "one crumb is all it takes." I can't stand...
