  1. Hello! My 8 year old son was diagnoses in May '08 and I still feel like we're trying to figure out the food out! I remember reading on this site that you can't expect to figure it out over night ... it's a huge learning curve! We eat a lot of Gluten Free Van's Waffles (there are 'normal' ones as well so just check the box). I believe there are other brands...
  2. I would say that our house is 95% gluten free. My husband does have wheat bread that he makes toast out of (he uses our old, gluten toaster) or makes sandwiches out of. Othan that, our house is gluten free. I found that I was VERY stressed and paranoid about the crumbs when I was preparing one child a gluten waffle and another a gluten free one or one...
  3. In my our family, three of us are gluten free ... my 8 year old son (diagnosed with Celiac disease), my 5 year old son (postive genetic markers and had some bad emotional / behavioral issues and constant fatigue), and me (also positive genetic markers, depression, RLS, etc.). My 5 year old and I tested negative on the blood work, but I would't eat or give...
  4. I looked it up and according to the Wegman's ingredients list for the light sticks it does not have gluten. But, in my buying guide (Cecelia's Marketplace 2008) it says it has gluten. Maybe it changed? Ingredients: Butter (Cream, Salt), Water (Ingredients Not Found in Regular Butter), Contains Less than 2% of food starch modified (Ingredients Not...
  5. Nichelob - I wonder if they've changed some of their products. I thought their light butter sticks contain gluten. I'll have to check it out. I do like their recipes on their website!
  6. I'm so sorry you're going through this! I'm right there with you!! I've had several times now where I've given my son (8) foods that I thought were gluten free and they weren't. The first time was right after he was diagnosed and I gave him Rice Dream rice milk 1-3 times a day. We took that out and he was great! Then recently he went back down hill complaining...
  7. Oh my ... is it just the reeses bells or do you think it's the mini cups as well? I'll have to run check because we have the mini cups and my son has been eating them! I've been searching for weeks to see what's been causing him to have symptoms again!! Margaret
  8. I'm sorry you got sick from Rice Dream!! I'm with you ... someone must be sadistic to think it's okay to put 'gluten free' on the box! I gave it my 7 year old son for 2-3 months before I happened to read a post on this website saying 'make sure to not use Rice Dream'. I couldn't figure out why he kept having symptoms!! I'm so thankful for this website! ...
  9. Rosie's Mom - I forgot to add this in my previous post! Before we figure out and then cut out the Rice Dream rice milk, his nurse and pediatric GI were also telling us that he had Functional Abdominal pain. I told the nurse that I didn't buy that and there had to be some different cause. She then said that some people just feel food going into their systems...
  10. I'm so sorry that your daughter is still having pain! My son (8 years old next week!) was diagnosed at the end of May 2008 and has had continued stomach pain since then ... all except for about 3 weeks. I was giving him Rice Dream and finally figured out that was a 'no-no.' We then had 3-4 good weeks before it started back again. With him feeling so much...
  11. Sara, My son (8) had a big problem with 'brain fog' before he went gluten free (he has Celiac). He didn't have a problem focusing in class, but would space out on the couch for long periods of time. Sometimes he'd say funny things afterwards like 'Mom, sometimes I look around and think 'What's going on?'' He did tell met that his brain feels a lot less...
  12. I think you're smart to question the results. I've heard many times that the tests can be negative in children. My oldest son (8) has Celiac Disease which was diagnosed via blood work and a biopsy. He was diagnosed after a year or more of chronic stomach pains, fatigue, and joint pains. His blood work was not horribly high, but the doctor said that we...
  13. I'm so excited to hear that! There is one that's supposed to be built less than 1/2 mile from our house! Thanks for sharing that info! Margaret
  14. I'm going to strongly agree with the Rice Dream. I gave it to my son for 2 1/2 or 3 months without realizing that it had the low levels of gluten / barley. We used it to cook with and for my son's cereal since we were also trying to keep him off of dairy. We stopped the Rice Dream and within a week his stomach pains were gone. We had tried to figure it...
  15. I have only posted on this board a few times, but read it almost every day for new ideas and for general information. My son (7 1/2) has Celiac Disease and has been on a gluten free diet for 4 months. He continued to have stomach pain although it was better than prediagnosis / pre gluten-free diet and most of his other symptoms had disappeared (leg...
  16. Hello all! I'm also in Raleigh. My oldest son was diagnosed with Celiac in May so we're just starting to get into the swing of gluten free living. I attended a North Raleigh support group meeting right after my son was dianosed and also a Cel-Kids picnic / meeting a couple weeks ago. There are several members who attend both. I hope to attend the September...
  17. I greatly appreciate the replies! I absolutely agree with everyone who has said that we won't know until we try! My husband and I decided over the weekend that we would make the house as gluten free as possible. We bagged up the wheat flours and put them up, I put away / threw away any gluten snacks, stocked up on gluten-free snacks / foods, and rearranged...
  18. Hello all! I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed 100 times before, but I could definitly use some opinions from others who have been through this. A little background, my oldest son (7) was diagnosed in May 2008 with Celiac Disease via blood work and endoscopy. We decided to have my middle son (4 1/2) tested and it turns out he has two genetic markers...
  19. Lia, I'm not sure I have any insight for you as my son (7) was diagnosed right before Mother's Day. I feel like I've been on a rollercoaster ride of emotions! At first the diet went well, but then he started having pain again and it almost seemed worse than before. The nutritionist and his pediatric GI suggested we take him off of all dairy for a 2-...
  20. Hello all! I've read many of the posts on this forum in the last 3 months and it's been very helpful. My son (7) was diagnosed 1 month ago with Celiac Disease (through biopsy and blood work). He had been experiencing stomach pain for a year and more recently he also had pain and weakness in his legs and slightly discolored teeth. Although I'm glad that...
