ARCHIVED Banana-spice Cookies*lee-lee* replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips i have a question. i've never used Tom Sawyers flour...does it have xanthan gum in it or should i add some if i'm using Bob's Red Mill All-Purpose mix? or will the baking powder and soda do the trick? i'm fairly new to baking (was never much of a baker before the days of celiac) so forgive my ignorance!

i always refused to take vitamins when i was younger because i would always, without fail, get sick within a few days. cold and flu like symptoms. i just decided last month to try taking a multi-vitamin and see what happens. so far, i've been totally fine. i can't explain why 15-20 years ago i would get sick but now i'm fine but i just figured i'd share...

the first book i read was Celiac Disease - A Hidden Epidemic by Dr. Peter Green. i found it very informative and helpful, as many posters have reported. i also read Gluten Free Living for Dummies. i found it helpful when i was first diagnosed. as far as cookbooks, i mainly use this forum to get ideas but i did get a cookbook by Carol Fenster for Christmas...

ARCHIVED What Is The Deal With Walmart?*lee-lee* posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications ugh, i'm getting annoyed with Walmart. here's my rant: i've emailed them a few times to inquire about the gluten content in certain items and i always get an immediate automated reply giving me links to their site (that are no help) and the direction to reply to their email if my question hasn't been answered. why do i have to send 2 emails to get...

ARCHIVED He's Using The Regular Toaster For Her Bread! (vent -- Long!)*lee-lee* replied to Sailing Girl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs have you tested her again, since you've started to suspect she's getting glutened while at her dad's house? you might get a positive result this time and that may help your case with the courts and with your ex.

i just found this article/blog in one of the newspapers from my hometown. it has some details about how the staff is trained. they even have to pass a test after they watch a training video! Open Original Shared Link

glad to hear you had such a positive experience. i must have gotten a bum pizza or something when i tried it a few weeks ago in Burlington VT. i didn't have any issues with CC but i thought the pizza itself was lacking a bit - dry and just kind of blah by the time i was halfway done. maybe i'll have better luck in a different town. seems like everyone...

i know my sores are cold sores, as a form of herpes. when i had my first outbreak over 10 years ago, i had to go to the dentist and regular doctor because it was so bad. my lips were covered and then they spread to the insides of my mouth and even on my tongue. the doctors confirmed they were legit cold sores and prescribed Denavir (OTC Abreva wasn't on...

that's awesome! i definitely mourned the loss of my beloved fettuccine alfredo until i discovered the Bertoli sauces are gluten free. one of these days i'll try and make my own sauce from scratch...

i usually get 3-4 cold sores on average per year. what's strange though is that i specifically remember purchasing Abreva last January so i know i had a cold sore this exact same time last year (before i was gluten free). the only thing different i've eaten lately is the new Strawberry Chex on Saturday morning. i hope i didn't get glutened from them because...

i woke up yesterday to feel my lip tingling...i've been getting cold sores for 10 years now so i knew what to do. i applied Abreva periodically all day only to discover the one cold sore turned into a cluster of them by nighttime. UGH! then i ran out of Abreva late last night so i'm off to get more. does anyone else get cold sores and what do you use...

this is interesting...i didn't really get my period until i was 15 but when it finally regulated to every month, it was terrible. extremely heavy with terrible cramps. it was unbearable so my mom took me to the gyno and i was put on birth control. that helped tremendously and i've been "regular" for over 12 years now. i wonder what will happen when i...

ARCHIVED Strawberry Chex*lee-lee* posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications i was at Walmart this morning and the new Strawberry Chex were calling out to me. the ingredients appear to be gluten free so i decided to give them a try. OMG they are so good! a welcome change from the plain Rice Chex. i emailed General Mills this afternoon just to make sure they truly are gluten-free (i'll post their response when i get it)...

i had joint pain (in my hips) for a year before i went gluten free. i tried so many things to make the pain stop and nothing ever really worked so eventually i gave up and just tried to live with the pain. it wasn't until 4+ months into the diet did i start to feel some relief. i would take Advil occasionally at night to help take the edge off but it was...

ARCHIVED Scared To Death Of My Biopsy*lee-lee* replied to GFinBC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms i was freaked out too before my biopsy, but it was a piece of cake. here in the states, they use an IV sedative. i don't remember anything after they put the bite plate in my mouth until i woke up in recovery about 40 minutes after the procedure was over. aside from being a bit groggy for the rest of the day, i was totally fine. i went home and took a...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Setting On Breadman Bread Machine*lee-lee* replied to Wildcat Golfer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips yes, my grandma only makes gluten free bread in her Zojirushi machine. she's 80 years old so she's not much into trying to program it differently so she just pushes the gluten free setting and lets it do its thing. she says it takes about 3 1/2 hours. the Breadman (Ultimate Plus, model TR2500BC) is totally customizable. it gives you the option to...

ARCHIVED Is Your Whole Household Gluten Free?*lee-lee* replied to TJ060306's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs it's just my boyfriend and i and we don't have a gluten free house. specialty gluten free foods (pasta, bread/flour ingredients) cost so much more than the regular stuff so monetarily we decided to allow both in our house. we each have separate cabinets for our food and our own cooking utensils. we also have separate toasters. this arrangement works...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Setting On Breadman Bread Machine*lee-lee* replied to Wildcat Golfer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips i just got the Breadman Ultimate (2500BC) for Christmas. i've made 4 loaves so far, 2 using the gluten-free setting and 2 using my own settings. the first loaf i made i followed a recipe that came with the machine and it came out fine. then i used my grandmas recipe but the gluten-free setting didn't cook it quite long enough. i had much better luck adding...

ARCHIVED Target Sells Rice Chex For $1.68!*lee-lee* replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications celiacs love rice chex! but stock up now while the price is low. my local Walmart did the same thing a few months back...at first they were $1.66 a box. then the price went up to $2.00 and now it's $2.98. still cheaper than the grocery stores but the price doubled in a matter of a few months.

ARCHIVED I'm Mad At Nature Valley's Granola Bars*lee-lee* replied to 626Belle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications Belle - i did this too for a few months when i first started the diet. i had always liked the NV granola bars and i was just thankful to have something i could throw in my purse to snack on if i wasn't at home. one day i looked a little more carefully at the ingredients and saw the dreaded word...MALT. oh how i mourned the loss of one of my favorite snacks...

ARCHIVED Supportive People In Your Life*lee-lee* replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease my boyfriends niece is 8 and i explained to her one day that i couldn't eat regular stuff like pizza and cake. she's pretty smart so i explained it was something called gluten. now every single time i see her, she reminds everyone in the room that i can't have gluten! it's adorable and hilarious that she remembered such a strange word and what it means...

i was devastated when i realized how difficult eating out was going to be. i've never been much of a cook and used to eat out at least 4 times a week. now, aside from the thought of eating out being scary, i think about how much money i'm saving. i think i've been out to eat 3 times in the past 6 months. when i do go out, i always think "boy i can make...
