  1. ...and Angelina can stay home with all the kiddies
  2. it's candle season (as my boyfriend likes to say) so i lit one last night. (it was Lavender Sage by Yankee Candle.) it was burning for about an hour when i developed a headache. the scent was pretty powerful so i blew it out but i stayed in the same room for a few hours longer. my headache got worse and i started to feel tired and nauseous like i was...
  3. i can't believe people think it's acceptable to not invite you to a wedding (esp if you're a close friend) and use the lame excuse that they were trying to do you a favor. my boyfriend obviously knows the couple better than i do and he speculates the bride-to-be may have been trying to spite him by not inviting me. (we're assuming she had...
  4. ugh, i know what you mean.. my grandmother (who has celiac herself, mind you) made a face at me when i mentioned i couldn't eat the turkey because of the stuffing. she doesn't follow the rules hardly at all unless it's convenient for her and thinks i'm overreacting because i don't do things exactly as she does! i'm beginning to dread Thanksgiving (i...
  5. yeah, i too say the biopsy is invasive. i've never had any surgical procedure before in my life so the sedation was a first for me. i was a bit freaked out at the thought of a huge tube being snaked down my throat and was very thankful when i woke up not having remembered anything after they inserted the bite plate in my mouth. write down all your questions...
  6. i've had severe joint pains in my hips for about 16 months now. i was tested last year numerous times for lymes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, mono, thyroid and probably others that i didn't know about. everything came back normal. i was sent to an ortho who ordered an MRI, which also came back normal. he finally diagnosed me with trocantaric bursitis...
  7. we've tossed around the idea that maybe it was an oversight to not include "and guest" or my name on the outside of the envelope (there was no inner envelope, just the invitation and RSVP card) but i think we decided to not bother asking and my boyfriend will just decline the invitation. he doesn't want to go without me, which i think is awfully sweet of...
  8. i have no scientific answer for you but i can tell you that i had a near immediate reaction one day (before i was diagnosed) to the turkey sandwich on RYE bread that i had for lunch. compared to my usual PBJ on white, which usually took at least an hour to get me running for the bathroom. coincidence? who knows? ironic? kinda. now i don't know which...
  9. i lived in the greater Saratoga area until right around the time i was diagnosed. one of my co-workers mentioned Wheatfields and i kind of blew her off thinking, "duh, a place called WHEAT isn't going to have anything gluten-free!" But i checked their website and sure enough...to think i lived so close and i never took advantage of it! i'm so glad...
  10. everyone reacts differently...you may see some relief in your symptoms as soon as a few weeks after going gluten-free. but more severe symptoms may take months to clear up. stay positive and be diligent in what you're eating. there is so much hidden gluten in food these days, you could be consuming it and not even know it. good luck with the procedures...
  11. ooh that's seriously the best! and in the future when people say "oh remember at so-and-so's wedding..." i can say "nope, i wasn't invited." i feel so much better about the whole thing! there are so many positives to NOT being invited to a wedding! LOL
  12. hi Dawn and welcome to our world!! this board is a great resource. read what you can and ask lots of questions...i'm sure you'll get some wonderful advise. i'm curious about the doctor your saw...many doctors won't diagnose celiac without first performing a biopsy and certainly not before the blood work results come back...you'll need to continue consuming...
  13. ha - good point! or dress to wear to the wedding!!
  14. i sympathize with you. my boyfriend is very happy consuming his gluten and leaving messes all over the kitchen when he's done cooking. he understands about gluten and all but doesn't have much patience for it. i also get irritated with my grandma - she has celiac but only follows the "rules" when it's convenient for her. and then she gets all mad at...
  15. so, i feel a little irritated and i need to vent. i'm kind of having a cranky day so feel free to bring me back into the real world if i'm being silly! my boyfriend and i just moved a few months ago back to the town he went to college in and subsequently lived for a few years after graduation. a couple of his friends still live in the area and one...
  16. oh shoot, did you find a place to eat?? i live clear across the country so i'm no help finding a place but maybe you find a nice local place that you like and call ahead to see if they can accommodate your wife. congrats on your new baby!!
  17. i have one. my parents do not and say they will never have one. i have lived in many apartments so one of my requirements when i'm looking at new places is a dishwasher! (and a washer/dryer hookup - i hate lugging my clothes to the laundromat.) here's a few more i know of off hand: grandparents - YES aunt/uncle - YES grandma - NO BF's bro...
  18. this is so true. my GI refused to "officially" diagnose me in spite of positive blood, the presence of one gene and positive dietary response just because my biopsy was negative. but when i went back to my PCP/GP doc last month, he said i definitely have Celiac and he doesn't need a biopsy to prove that. it took me a while to accept that i don't need...
  19. thank you so much for starting this thread. this is also my first Thanksgiving since being diagnosed and i'm not looking forward to it. i tend to get very anxious at the holidays and always feel like nothing i do is good enough. throw "fussy eater" status on top of that and i'm pulling my hair out by mid-day! i'm really looking forward to reading...
  20. i thought it was worth mentioning that i just bought a couple more boxes of Rice Chex yesterday and noticed there is no mention of Celiac Disease anywhere...not even on the side panel. but the ingredients are the same so we're good! it would appear the stores have not resorted to pulling those dusty old boxes out from the shadows of the stockroom!
  21. great post Jennifer. it does get a bit heated over there...i prefer to lurk but sometimes i can't help myself and have to throw my opinion in the mix. (and i usually regret it afterward. ) i much prefer all the nice people on this board!!
  22. everyone reacts differently but i'm sure it's not completely unheard of to still feel crappy for a few days. maybe you're ingesting gluten somewhere and you don't know it? some prescription meds have gluten. also some people become sensitive to dairy and/or soy. (personally, i can't tolerate much more than a cup of milk with my morning cereal or else...
  23. hmmm. well, i guess i agree with you all. i just think the waitress could have been a little nicer. maybe i'm over thinking it. i tend to get defensive of fellow Celiacs! but yeah, i cannot imagine going to IHOP. i still get nervous at restaurants that have a gluten-free menu!!
  24. sorry in advance for this long-ish post but i just have to get everyone's opinions!! i occasionally post (but mostly lurk) on the Miss Manners etiquette board over on at MSN. one poster who happens to be a waitress at IHOP posted about a customer she had over the weekend:
  25. some of your symptoms remind me of how i felt before i was diagnosed. i was anemic as a teenager and at the beginning of this year i began experiencing stomach problems. i let it go on for a few months and it wasn't until i realized i was popping Imodium's every day that i considered i might have more than an upset stomach. additionally, i was always tired...
