ARCHIVED What Do You Do When You Receive Cookies And Cakes As Gifts?torontosue replied to Amyleigh0007's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I work in a high end hair salon and lots of our clients gave cookies or chocolates that were not safe. I just said thank you and smiled, then put out a plate of these goodies on the front counter for clients and staff alike. Everyone enjoyed them, moaned about how fat they were getting and enjoyed not having to worry about overeating them for the first...

ARCHIVED Canadians - Timothy's Coffee?torontosue replied to torontosue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications Thank you.....that's good to know. I've been drinking Second Cup, because they responded right away, but I prefer Timothys. Sue

ARCHIVED Canadians - Timothy's Coffee?torontosue posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications By flavoured coffee I don't mean those sweetened latte things....I'm talking a cup of regular black amaretto, or coconut....you know, regular coffee? I've written to them twice but not heard back. does anyone know if their flavoured coffees are safe?

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Update And Familiestorontosue replied to torontosue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I suggested cooking at my place and having my family all come here, but I'm in a 2 bedroom apartment as opposed to my parent's house with a huge yard (and the weather was nice). I was also told theat they wouldn't want to eat me 'weird foods'. Ah well, I plan on doing the same thing at Christmas. Maybe if I do it often enough she'll realize I'm serious...

Well, I posted in the Thanksgiving thread that I was just gonna bring my own food and try not to make a production about it, make sure I was first served so there would be no cross contamination.....well.... let's just say my mother didn't agree with me, and made sure to make a HUGE production out of it, rant about how hurt she was that I didn't trust...

ARCHIVED First Thanksgiving Gluten-freetorontosue replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I'm going to bring my own turkey breast and stuffing. I always do the cranberries anyway, and this year i've said I'll bring dessert, so I'm making a pumpkin swirl cheesecake. I figure there will be veggies to eat that are safe. I plan on bringing it straight to the kitchen and not even mentioning to anyone else that I'm doing it, my mum knows of course...

ARCHIVED Graham Cracker Crust Replacement Ideas?torontosue replied to torontosue's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Thanks all for the ideas. I'm going to be in the neighbourhood of a different health food store today and will look there and see what they have. The ginger snaps are easy tofind, so if I can't get graham crackers I will use those. And yes, it IS a pumpkin cheesecake. LOL

ARCHIVED Graham Cracker Crust Replacement Ideas?torontosue posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips I'm supposed to be bringing a cheesecake to a Thanksgiving day celebration I'll be attending this coming weekend. I've gone over the recipe and realized it's all good and made with gluten-free ingredients with the exception of one important thing....the Graham cracker crust. Went to the health food store today to see if there was such a thing as a gluten...

ARCHIVED Swollen Joint From Celiac?torontosue replied to Lisa16's topic in Related Issues & Disorders It's interesting this topic has come up. I just logged on to post a similar question. It's been about 2 weeks for me, my left knee has near doubled in size and walking is brutally painful. Doesn't help I have a job where I'm on my feet all day either. I'm pretty sure it's from a gluten exposure, I've never ever had knee problems in my life, I didn't have...

ARCHIVED Bulk Xanthan Gum In Canadatorontosue replied to theceliachusband's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff I got a HUGE container at my local health food store. It's EnerG brand and says its 227 g. considering most recipes only call for a small amount, I figure it should last a good long time.

ARCHIVED Can A Cream Effect My Insides?torontosue replied to torontosue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease The creams I was using were facial skin moisturizer and an anti-wrinkle eye cream. If anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated.

ARCHIVED Can A Cream Effect My Insides?torontosue replied to torontosue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Well I'm glad I didn't buy the $90 bottle then. And thank you all for your replies. This made me investigate a little further and I've also discovered my eye cream says 'wheat protein' in it's ingredient listing. Guess it's time to go shopping for a new beauty regime? I wonder if this is also why my knee has flared up this week as well.

I've been suffering from gut issues all week. Bloated, crampy, and yes, the dreaded running to the bathroom WAY too often. Couldnt think of what might be causing it as I've not eaten any out of the ordinary foods lately, and everything has been prepared at home by me. Then this morning as I was getting ready for work and making sure to pack my Imodium,...

ARCHIVED Does A Hot Dog Have Gluten?torontosue replied to TammyK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I was at Costco the other day and had to go thru about 4 different hot dog brands before finding one that didn't contain wheat as a filler. I don't know if this is just common in Canada, but I see more with then without.

ARCHIVED Does A Hot Dog Have Gluten?torontosue replied to TammyK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease A lot of nuts do have wheat in their coating. I was accidentally glutened eating almonds this way, thought they'd be a safe snack, half way thru the small bag I noticed it on the ingredient list. I'm not sure if it's to help the salt stick to the nuts or just to keep the salt from sticking together in the production line, but it's safer to eat raw nuts....

ARCHIVED How Do You Make Normal Sized Cakes?torontosue replied to JennyC's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips I do a double layered round cake using the one bowl chocolate cake someone here posted. Maybe someone can help you out with the recipe. It's really easy.

ARCHIVED Another Question From A New Celiac!torontosue replied to jewlesD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease If it's available to you, you might want to try a few different brands of gluten free bread. I know the first one I tried gave me a reaction similar to being glutened. Felt heavy, bloated and sharp crampy pains. After three attempts I gave it up and disposed the remainder of the loaf and tried a different brand, with no complications. I'm not sure exactly...

ARCHIVED Do I *really* Have To Get A New Toaster?torontosue replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease The only thing I replaced were the wooden spoons, I figured those were more porous and who knew? Besides, a few wooden spoons didn't cost that much. The rest of my kitchen stuff I cleaned really thoroughly. I didn't get a new toaster, but I use a toaster oven so it was a lot easier to clean that out, just scrub the rack, clean out the bottom as well as...

Yup, at least 3 days recovery here. I guess it depends on how bad I've been glutened.

ARCHIVED Need Chicken Wing Recipetorontosue replied to torontosue's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Well I FINALLY did my wings this afternoon.....and I have to say they were pretty good! Good enough to keep me happy, though the kid did say they tasted more 'flour-y' with the use of the rice flour. I found they weren't quite as crispy, but I used the bake in the oven once they've been fried technique someone suggested and that did seem to help quite a bit...

Nope, only been gluten-free for 2 months, but oh what a change in those 2 months. I didnt realize how bad I really felt til I started to feel good, if that makes any sense. I didn't realize I had the brain fog and the exhaustion. I just thought I was tired from work and looking after 2 teenage boys! The D was bad and I sure do NOT miss that. But nope,...

Sorry to hear you were glutened. I haven't had the doctor not listening to me situation yet. It was actually at the ER that I was diagnosed when I went in with that same intense pain you mention. I guess I was lucky, I must have had the one doctor in the whole medical community who knows Celiac. I had a similar reaction to a bag of almonds not too long...

Was REALLY craving wings today.....so much so that I nearly cheated and hit my local wing place thinking, well what's the worst that can happen??? Luckily my 14 yr old kid talked me out of it. So, I've never made wings without first coating them in a spiced flour mixture, the recipe I used to use had them sit til the flour got all sticky then RECOAT them...

For as long as I can remember I've always bruised easily. It's only gotten worse in the last few years, the joke is look at me too hard and I'll end up bruised. Now I know it's most likely a side effect of being celiac, but that doesn't stop the fact that I'm virtually always covered in bruises that I don't even know how they got there. Just wondering...
