  1. HI - I live in North Royalton and have been to a few meetings around.....there is the Northeast Ohio Celiac group ( www.geocities.com/clevelandceliac ) and also the Great Cleveland Celiac Association ( www.clevelandceliac.webs.com ). I liked the Raisin Rack in Canton, but I LOVED the Raisin Rack in Westerville by Columbus. That store was the best I...
  2. Orbit recently released a new kind of gum called Orbit Mist. It sounds like a really great gum, and I'd love to try it, but I wanted to check here before I purchased any. I buy regular orbit gum all the time and am fine with it, but I wondered if this new kind is gluten free!
  3. One thing that SHOULD be written about is the unfairness of the astronomical price of gluten free foods. Of course many companies out there are jumping on the bandwagon and producing it because there is a lot of money to be made! For anything that comes into the limelight, there will be someone wanting to make a buck. I try not to buy prepackaged gluten...
  4. I am planning a very short trip to NYC withy my daughter, and I'm looking for recommendations for gluten free restaurants very close (or in) Times Square. Because of some shows we're seeing, I don't think we'll be able to make it to Rissoteria or some of the others I've read about that are a little further out from Times Square. Any suggestions? Thanks...
  5. Just bought some necco wafers earlier today, which i read were gluten free, and haven't felt well since I ate them! I felt similar the last time I ate swedish fish (which also are supposed to be gluten free). I think it may be the food coloring, but i'm not sure. Does anyone else have issues when they eat anything with food coloring besides me?
  6. Wonderful - thanks for all the info, it will really help!
  7. I know I'm getting really specific here, but does anyone know of any gluten free restaurants in at Reston Town Center (in Reston VA)? I'm traveling to a hotel there for work, and I will not have a car to drive around in. I'll have to walk to this area to eat every night. Thanks for any help!
  8. I need to travel for work and I'm really nervous about it too. I'm going to have to do tons of calling beforehand - to the hotel and to the restaurants around it, so that I know how much food I need to bring with me!! That will be funny, at the airport having TSA open a huge suitcase full of gluten free food ...
  9. I believe there is a Raisin Rack in Westerville, right near Columbus. I've shopped at one in Canton, and it was GREAT for the amount of products they had. Little expensive to be sure, but at least you can pick and choose. Check it out!
  10. Has anyone (who is especially sensitive) found a good quality gluten free/dairy free multivitamin? I've tried several that are marked gluten free, but I always develop this weird left side pain when I take them. If I stop taking them, pain goes away. Start again, and pain is back. The same goes for the Citrical I take. Anyone found any good vitamins...
  11. thanks so much for the quick reply!
  12. I purchased some Seagram's Ginger Ale for a party the other day, and just remembered that i forgot to check to see if it is gluten free or not. I've been looking through the search tool on here, and am not having any luck. Does anyone know if this brand of ginger ale is gluten-free?
  13. My family went to Carrabba's last night and enjoyed a pretty good gluten free meal. However, I really think that waiters in these types of restaurants should have more specific training regarding allergens. Our waiter saw that me, my daughter and my husband were all looking at our own gluten free menu. My son, who is not gluten-free was reading a regular...
  14. I want to try the Carol Fenster sorghum mix for baking (1-1/2 c. sorghum, 1-1/2 c. potato starch, 1 c. tapioca flour, and 1/2 c. corn or almond flour) and wondered if anyone has had success with it? Especially interested in hearing how it works with regular cookie recipes or cake recipes. (After adding xanthum of course)
  15. I broke down crying during a trip to Amish country, right outside an awesome bulk foods store, because there was SO much I couldn't have. All these elderly people were looking at me like what's with her???
  16. I know how you feel - I went to a retirement party last night with hors d'oeuvres and could not eat a single one of them (since I can't have dairy either). However, I could eat the grapes that were a garnish on the cheese plate, so I think I might have taken ALL of them Oh, and I had a few pieces of pepperoni. I looked like I wasn't joining in and it...
  17. Thanks David!! That's fantastic because my family loves stollen as well -
  18. I'm trying really hard to find a good tasting gluten free Lebkuchen recipe for the holidays this year. Anyone have a good one that they've tried? Can't believe this will be the first holiday I can't have any regular baked goods!!!
  19. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has a pretty good article about Celiac Disease and gluten on the cover of their health section today. Also lists some area stores. I was shocked, but pleased, to see such good coverage.
  20. Can I ask a question here: I had fairly high/positive results for gluten intolerance through Enterolab, and those results also showed gluten induced small intestinal malabsorption (at the moderate level). My question is: Because I have this malabsorption, does this equate to having villi damage (which might mean Celiac)? Enterolab was my only...
  21. I would definitely mention it too. My daughter is a high school senior, and on her medical paperwork this year, I put a note about her situation and said that "she MUST be able to leave the class and use the restroom if necessary, NO QUESTIONS." Now that the teachers know this (and the other students don't), she's got peace of mind that if she feels sick...
  22. Good things: no more BLOATING!! no more mid-day crashing - have energy all day sleeping better chronic throat clearing is gone BM's (no need to say more!) no more carb craving - I eat at mealtimes and I'm satisfied all in all it's has been wonderful
  23. My bag has a funky taste too. I was really disappointed and couldn't figure out why it tasted like that. I might try another bag from another store and see what that one is like. If it tastes the same I don't think I'll buy anymore of that brand. Are there any other certified gluten free oats available, other than Bob's Red Mill?
  24. Thanks so much. It will be fun to experiment. Mixes are good, but I was a HUGE baker until about 3 weeks ago, and my tries haven't been very successful. It will just take time! Now if I could just get the perfect pie crust recipe I will be very happy!
  25. I'm looking for a really good gluten free cookbook - one that has lots of dependable recipes for breads, cakes and cookies. Does anybody know a good one?
