ARCHIVED Potty Training?
tpineo replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Part of the way we were led to a celiac disease dx with our daughter was because she was a bright, cooperative 2+ year old child who was having trouble with toilet training. Once we made the dx and got her on the gluten-free diet the toilet training was no problem. So my only advice is make sure your child has been gluten-free long enough not to have GI... -
ARCHIVED Soy Protein
tpineo replied to emikatmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The ingredients in candy corn are usually gluten-free but most candy corn companies say their candy corn is not gluten-free due to cross contamination. Jelly Belly candy corn is gluten-free (I called last week). Brachs, Here's Howie, Giant Eagle (made by Here's Howe), and Wegman's candy corn are not gluten-free due to cross contamination. Tania Greenville... -

ARCHIVED Nursing Home Meals
tpineo replied to JT-PDX's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would get a doctor's order for gluten-free foods- they have to comply with a doctor's order. I would also try to use as many pre-packaged gluten-free foods as possible to reduce cross-contamination. Tania Greenville, PA -
ARCHIVED Should I Buy A Cooler?
tpineo replied to lipreader's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I use a small cooler/lunch bag for every day but use a huge cooler for trips to the health food (gluten-free) store to stock up (we aren't close to much gluten-free shopping) and for vacations. Tania Greenville, Pa -
ARCHIVED Children's Book?
tpineo replied to lipreader's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
"Eating Gluten-free with Emily" is better for younger kids (2-5). "No More Tummy Aches and Cupcakes" is better for school age kids. Tania Greenville, Pa -

"i know how confused you are. im looking at the back of a kraft product and am very confused." Kraft is one of the companies that will list gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats) on the label. They will not "hide" gluten in natural flavors, malt, modified food starch, etc. If it is in one of those things the label will read, "modified food starch (wheat)... -
ARCHIVED 3 Yr Old Son Just Diagnosed With Celiac
tpineo replied to robbiesmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The only mainstream gluten-free cereals that I am aware of are: Post Fruity Pebbles Post Cocoa Pebbles Malt O Meal Fruity Dyno Bites Wegman's grocery store brand cereal has some gluten-free cereals which are marked on the front of the cereal. One is Corn Bursts (like Corn Pops). Rice Krispies contain barley malt and are NOT gluten-free. Other... -

Centrum for kids is gluten-free. (They have Sponge Bob on them). Tania Greenville, PA -
I received the following from Dairy Queen last month. Please note that they say you have to check with each Dairy Queen about the soft serve. I had them bring out the bag the soft serve stuff comes in to verify that it came from ADQ. Milk shakes aren't on their gluten-free list. Tania Greenville, PA Dear Ms. Tania Pineo, Thank you for contacting...

ARCHIVED Gf School Supplies
tpineo replied to tpineo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I buy some things for the whole class (like the gluten-free play dough-it is a huge container). For the things that come up once a year -like cereal or pasta for a craft -I usually just bring in some for her. Most of what the preschool she attends has is okay because this is her second year and they make sure to order the basics from crayola or another... -

We have a support group that is about 5 months old and each month I request samples from gluten-free companies. Many companies have been very generous and it has been a great way to sample foods and decide what to buy in the future. However, we have contacted all the established gluten-free companies (i.e., gluten-free Pantry, Kinnikinnick, Ener-g...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Kitchen Or Not?
tpineo replied to key's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For me the time issue (not cooking 2 meals) wins out for why we have a gluten-free kitchen. We have 3 non-celiacs (me, husband, and daughter-6) and 1 celiac (4 year old daughter). I believe that when you get good at gluten-free cooking the other kids won't suffer. My older daughter gets to have gluten treats at school during the day and is fine with everything... -
ARCHIVED Baby Wipes
tpineo replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I contacted Pampers and Huggies recently because we wipe hands with wipes in the car before we eat, thus possible cross-contamination. Pampers stated that their wipes (all baby wipes and Kando kid wipes) are gluten-free. Huggies stated that their wipes (baby wipes and Pull Up Just for kids) may contain a trace a amount of gluten and thus they will not... -

ARCHIVED Am I Alone In Feeling This Way?
tpineo replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you don't have it yet Kids with Celiac Disease by Danna Korn is a great resource book. I definitely felt like you do when my daughter was first diagnosed but it really does get easier and become second nature. (I stockpile her favorite items and have a second freezer for frozen items.) The expense gets a little better as you weed out certain items and... -

ARCHIVED Starting A Support Group
tpineo replied to Rikki Tikki's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Sally, I just did this- 1) Contact your local papers- most will run an announcement on the community page for free. 2) Inform the GI docs, family docs, internal med docs in your area and they will pass info on to patients- this works better if you give them a flyer to pass on. 3) Call the companies- they are generous and will donate samples. ... -

ARCHIVED Distended Stomache?
tpineo replied to lainie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter was diagnosed at 3 and it took a few months to see the difference in her stomach. She regained her energy, started toileting normally, and gained several pounds within a few weeks of being gluten-free but it took longer for her stomach to look "normal" again. Hang in there - the first few months are the hardest when you are constantly unsure...
