  1. So... I decided to try reducing the amount of gluten my daughter was eating. I haven't laid down the law to my husband or enforced a "no gluten" policy at school (yet), but I think it's helping! She had a really loose #2 in her underwear this weekend (what a mess) and I told her if the poopie doesn't hurt, PLEASE use the potty. And tonight, she did!...
  2. Depending on where you live, avocados might be kind of pricey... but they're healthy and they have a lot of calories.
  3. I do feel OK about being the expert I figured out the casein intolerance and took him to the ER when the nurses kept saying, "Oh... I'm sure [the high fever and vomiting] is nothing to worry about..." That's when a spinal tap revealed meningitis. When I was buying a couple more jars of "summer vegetables" I was surprised at how many baby foods have...
  4. By the way... I'm sorry it took so long for you to be diagnosed! Looking back, I had a lot of the symptoms of hypothyroidism by the time I was a teenager. It makes me sick to think about how many doctors I saw without getting a diagnosis. I was an athlete in high school and I'm sure I looked like the picture of health. I remember having a physical...
  5. Bananas give my mom horrible, stinky flatulence. She only eats them when they're just barely ripe (still a bit green) and never before she has to leave the house.
  6. I did give him probiotics for a little while after the hospitalization... "BabyLife," which has bifidobacterium. I've read that's the primary bacteria in the intestines of healthy, breastfed infants. Do you know anything about the different strains? I'm open to trying a different brand. He hasn't had any of the common allergens (at least in his own solid...
  7. Hi Jackie, That's a tough one! I'm constantly amazed at the poor nutritional quality of hospital food I have two suggestions... 1) Take a stockpile of your own snacks. It won't be enough for meals, but at least it could help tide you over while you're waiting for something other than crackers. 2) Since you have a little time before...
  8. My son is seven months old (almost eight). He has a severe intolerance to casein, but I eliminated dairy from my diet and all of his symptoms went away. I was worried that he might have more allergies/intolerances, so I waited until he was six months old to start introducing solid foods. I was looking forward to exploring new foods with him when the time...
  9. Good point. I think the really tricky thing is that if you have more than one autoimmune disorder (which is common), the symptoms can conflict. Lots of people with gluten intolerance get diarrhea; in me it has the opposite effect. Also, not everybody has the same symptoms or the same severity Hypothyroidism can lead to high cholesterol, but that...
  10. ps - Besides feeling cold, here are some other symptoms of hypothyroidism: - Constipation - Depression - Anxiety - Dry skin - Heavy, irregular periods - Fatigue - Hair loss - Slow heart rate - Low blood pressure - Weight gain, difficulty losing weight
  11. Sounds like it's time for a new doctor! Even without insurance, it only costs about $50 to test your TSH. I'm trying to find a new doctor too. The one who found my hypothyroidism moved to another town (thanks for the warning) and his "replacement" spent less than 30 seconds asking how I was feeling on my new medication. "Just tell me what kind of...
  12. Feeling cold all the time is a common symptom of hypothyroidism... which (if it's an autoimmune condition) might improve when you go off gluten. Have you ever had your TSH level checked?
  13. Exactly!! You can take hormone replacement for hypothyroidism... you can stop eating gluten and celiac disease gets better. These are both highly treatable conditions. I hadn't quite thought of it that way, but you're exactly right. There are MUCH worse things to have. I bought a celiac book... and the list of ingredients with gluten is...
  14. Hi Cheryl, No problem! I recommended that book to my mom too. I have learned SO much about autoimmune disorders in the last couple of months, ever since I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. With all of the health problems in my extended family (diabetes, arthritis, anemia, lupus, etc...) I can't believe nobody had realized that these might be...
  15. What about using a 100% unsweetened cocoa powder? I don't know if you can find chips or a bar with no other ingredients to hold the chocolate together. Even Sharffen Berger's 99% baking chocolate has soy lecithin. The natural foods co-op in my town carries powder from, Rapunzel, Dagoba, and Green & Black's. My husband likes to use it to make hot chocolate...
  16. Hi LIS, I've really worried about being like my mom. Her own mother had type I diabetes and died in her 30s. My mom, thank God, is still alive at age 61, but her health has been bad for as long as I can remember. She recently had to go on insulin because her diabetes is so out of control... she's also obese, has fibromyalgia, arthritis (knee replacement...
  17. That's how I used to feel about dairy products too. If someone had told me five years ago that I would be giving up dairy products, I would have told them they were CRAZY. Then I lost a baby... for no apparent reason... when my chances of loss were supposed to be less than 1%. I went in for a routine ultrasound and there was no heartbeat. I hope you never...
  18. ps - In case you didn't know, celiac is also considered an autoimmune disorder.
  19. Hi Cheryl, I don't know much about scleroderma, but I do know that reactions to gluten (and sometimes other foods like dairy and soy) can set off all kinds of autoimmune disorders. They run in my family too. I found a good book about this... "The Autoimmune Connection" by Rita Baron-Faust and Jill Buyon. It isn't so explicit about the gluten issue...
  20. No official diagnosis... but I've been off gluten for about seven weeks and I feel dramatically better! In July I had a routine physical and found out I have autoimmune hypothyroidism (a pretty severe case). My level of alkaline phosophatase... another liver enzyme... was about ten points out of range. I just asked about it on another thread a few days...
  21. I think it's great that you're getting this checked out. I don't doubt that your daughter is having some food intolerance problems... hopefully she's going to feel a lot better within the next couple of days! I just wanted to add another idea... could she be getting her two-year molars? My three-year-old is VERY active, but while her molars were coming...
  22. Some of my three-year-old's favorites... - Bell pepper (green, red, etc...) - Carrots - Broccoli - Hard boiled eggs - Nuts (we've never had a choking incident) - Popcorn - Yogurt (dairy or soy) - Celery with dip - Dried fruit (raisins, apricots, etc...) - gluten-free waffles - Cheese (including cottage cheese...
  23. It sounds like you had a good doctor who was willing to look at more than just the standard celiac blood tests for your diagnosis. This is all very helpful information! I didn't realize there was such a connection between the thyroid and liver. Did any of you notice symptoms that improved when your liver enzymes went back to normal levels? I'm just...
  24. Hi Sarah, How regular are your periods? Maybe this is totally out in left field, but what if you've been pregnant once or twice and had an early miscarriage? My breasts were really sore the first time I got pregnant... I could hardly stand to take a shower and the water pressure wasn't even that high. I didn't take a pregnancy test until AF...
  25. I've given birth twice in the last three years (with a loss at 17 weeks in between). In both full-term pregnancies I gained 50 pounds. Normal is supposed to be 15-25 pounds, but my caregiver never commented on it. I'm tall (6'0"), pretty careful about my diet, have never tested positive for gestational diabetes, and I'm not overweight. So... I guess ...
