ARCHIVED Sugar Cravings!
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Right... maybe I should have labeled this thread "Chocolate addiction, anyone?" But seriously... what convinced you to cut back on sugar? And how did you do it? -
ARCHIVED Celiacs And Other Food Intolerance
Mother of Jibril replied to ligeia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Actually, I've found this forum to be REALLY helpful for lots of things... like learning more about autoimmune disorders and my son's intolerance to casein. I'm not officially diagnosed as a celiac (I was already off gluten when I took the blood test), but I do have one celiac gene and one gluten-sensitive gene. When I took gluten out of my diet it... -

No problem! I'm still learning too My husband was also confused. (He's 49, but has been blessed with nearly perfect health. I don't even remember the last time he had a cold.) He said, "I noticed you've been taking a lot of medicine for the last couple of months." "Yeah, thyroid medication plus a few supplements." "Well when are you going to... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free In San Francisco?
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Very nice My experience in the Midwest has been quite different. I stopped eating pork products about fifteen years ago, but I still get problems with people who don't realize that ham, bacon, sausage, etc... are all PORK. It's so easy to get a salad with a few bacon bits or a little piece of ham in your scrambled-egg breakfast. The thing is... a... -
I'm not a picky eater. Even after cutting pork, alchohol, dairy, gluten, and corn out of my diet, there's still plenty to eat. Fruits, vegetables, eggs, beans, nuts, meat (mostly fish), rice... all these things are great. So here's my question. Yesterday I was with a friend and I had a fruit smoothie. Before I ordered it, I checked to make sure...

ARCHIVED Hello

Welcome to the group! My son has a severe intolerance to casein (cow's milk)... turns out he got it from me. I'm learning a lot of good things here! -

Just wanted to add one little point... I've also read that it's possible to heal an autoimmune thyroid problem with a gluten-free diet, but it depends on how much your thyroid has been damaged. Casein (the protein in cow's milk) can be a problem for people with autoimmune thyroid disorders too... and other foods. Gluten is a GREAT place to start,... -

Three safe ideas to get things moving: - Prunes - Vitamin C supplements (you can't really overdose on it, because your body will just excrete whatever you can't use... this has given me diarrhea before!) - Magnesium supplements... I've read that you can start with 200mg and work up to 600-800mg. If you start getting diarrhea just cut back -
In three weeks I'm going to San Francisco for a conference... my first dairy-free, gluten-free, corn-free trip. I'm going to be staying at a hotel right next to Union Square. Keeping in mind that I've never been in that city before and I'm going to be dependent on public transportation, does anyone know of some good restaurants in that area? I'll eat...

Goat cheese does have a really specific taste. Either you love it or you don't. Sometimes feta cheese is made from sheep's milk instead of cow's milk... that could be a good substitute. I never would have thought of making pho in a crock pot! I'll have to keep that in mind. The catch is that my favorite pho has tripe in it. Yeah... thin slices of... -
Hives and itching are the least of your worries when it comes to allergies. My guess is that the "coma" feeling means your brain is not getting enough oxygen. If it gets really bad you could go into anaphylaxis and that could be fatal. I've seen it happen with a 17-year-old college student who was severely allergic to seafood. All it took was a TRACE...

Considering how quickly you get that reaction, you could have a true allergy! Very dangerous. And the more you expose yourself to an allergen, the worse the reaction gets. Have you ever been to an allergist for a skin test? I would go ASAP.

Mother of Jibril replied to gayle and madison's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sure it makes you worry... wondering about the long-term impact on your daughter. My eight-month-old son had meningitis this summer (thankfully the viral kind, which is rarely fatal) and I definitely worry about whether there will be any long-term effects! I also have a daughter who's three years old. Her preschool has the three, four, and five-year... -
Another idea... rice cereal (Bob's Red Mill makes a gluten-free, dairy-free version), which is like oatmeal. I mixed mine with hazelnuts, raisins, pure maple syrup, and almond milk. Yum! Rice Dream has a tiny amount of barley. I haven't tried it since I've been off gluten, but apparently a lot of celiac/gluten intolerant people have a bad reaction...

ARCHIVED Differnces Please
Mother of Jibril replied to kezee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Figuring out intolerances is a very individual process. I'm going to give you a brief description of my timeline (so far), but keep in mind that this is just my personal experience. After my son was born in February I started having a lot of abdominal symptoms... pain, gas, bloating, and constipation. In April we figured out that my son has a severe... -

Mother of Jibril replied to kezee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A skin test for allergies is not very expensive and it is very accurate. They scratch the surface of your skin with potential allergens (food products, mold, dust mites, etc...) and if you're allergic there will be an IgE histamine response that creates a welt on your skin (like a mosquito bite). The thing is... only 1-2% of people have a real food allergy... -

If you're intolerant to "dairy," I would assume that means casein. Casein is in ALL cow's milk dairy products. Lactose intolerance is a different story... as far as I know, it's uncomfortable (causes bloating and gas), but it doesn't damage your intestines or cause your body to produce antigens. Casein intolerance does. I eat small amounts of goat... -

Mother of Jibril replied to kezee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you're intolerant to cow's milk then casein is the culprit. The reaction damages your intestines and reduces your abilty to produce lactase (the enzyme needed to digest lactose)... so it's a double whammy! When you're lactose intolerant... which is MUCH more common... your body isn't producing enough lactase, but that's typical when you're past the age... -

I just want to clarify two things that confused me for a while... 1) Wheat does have gluten. So do lots of other grains. You can have an allergy to wheat without having a gluten intolerance. Or you could have both. Allergies are IgE reactions. An allergist can do a skin test if you think you have problems with allergies (hives, breathing problems... -
ARCHIVED Does Stress Aggravate Your Digestion?
Mother of Jibril replied to celiacker's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Stress can have a LOT of negative physical effects on your body. It forces your adrenal glands to work very hard and that can mess up the balance of all your other hormones (reproductive, endocrine, etc...). Chronic stress can also lead to new autoimmune disorders in your thyroid, joints, nervous system, liver, pancreas... having celiac disease puts you... -

A couple of thoughts for you... - I joined SPALS after my loss and it was SO helpful having other women to "talk" to who understand what it's like to lose a child and go through a subsequent pregnancy. You can check it out at Open Original Shared Link. If you want to join you have to send an e-mail to the group administrator and ask to be added to the... -
ARCHIVED Constipation- Question
Mother of Jibril replied to jasonD2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Lots of discussion about constipation today Have you ever had your thyroid checked? One classic sign of hypothyroidism is constipation. At a minimum, you should ask to be tested for TSH and thyroid antibodies. Autoimmune thyroid disorders are genetically linked to some types of gluten intolerance. Magnesium and vitamin C supplements can... -
ARCHIVED Bloody Stools
Mother of Jibril replied to Treen Bean's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is really veering into TMI territory Even being off dairy, gluten, and corn, I still only make #2 three or four times a week. The good thing is that it's no longer rock hard or painful to pass. That's my definition of constipated. It probably does vary from person to person! -
ARCHIVED Bloody Stools
Mother of Jibril replied to Treen Bean's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How much blood is it? If it's only a little... and you're constipated... my guess would be hemorrhoids. About a month ago I got glutened and the pain of #2 was so bad... I not only saw blood when I wiped, I actually popped a blood vessel in my left eye from straining! -
ARCHIVED Why Did I Have To Figure This Out?
Mother of Jibril replied to Spruey Stuey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah... the last two years have been REALLY tough I'm so sorry that it took you 20 years to get some answers! My mom has been suffering from autoimmune problems for a long time and doctors kept telling her "it's all in your head." It didn't help that she didn't have health insurance for about a decade. I really have been changed forever too. That...
