ps - Without knowing the alpha chains, it's impossible to know exactly how common your genes are. In fact, I made an assumption that you're DQ2.2 instead of DQ2.3, since (according to Wikipedia) only 0.08% of Caucasian Americans are DQ2.3. You're definitely a DQ6.3... that's found in less than 6% of the same population, making it the 8th most common DQ...

You have DQ2.2. The good news is that DQ2.5 is the more dangerous version for celiac disease... but DQ2.2 doesn't completely rule it out. It's also linked to HLA-DR7, which puts you at risk for psoriasis, cardiomyopathy, and Graves disease (hyperthyroidism). DQ6.3 is a actually a good gene to have. It's still gluten-sensitive, but it offers protection...

ARCHIVED Gluten Ataxia
Mother of Jibril replied to Amber M's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree... knowing that you have gluten intolerance is just as important. Even if you don't have celiac (an autoimmune disorder that damages your intestines) there are dozens of other disorders that have been linked to gluten intolerance. The DQ7 gene, for example, puts you at risk for gluten intolerance, casein intolerance, thyroid disorders, grass and... -
ARCHIVED What Does This Sound Like To You?

The copper deficiency could explain a LOT. Check out this case study: Open Original Shared Link When you start taking a lot of foods out of your diet, you really do need to plan ahead so you don't get to that hypoglycemic stage I keep little bags of snacks around the house... nuts, dried fruit, pumpkin seeds, chocolate... so I can quickly and... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Gene Inheritance
Mother of Jibril replied to parker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Let me back up for a second there... I suppose gene mutation is possible. Otherwise, how did the human population end up with all these different DQs? But... I don't think the same mutation would happen twice in two different kids unless you have identical twins. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Gene Inheritance
Mother of Jibril replied to parker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wikipedia says that serotyping for *0201 is 98% accurate, but for *0202 it's only 87% accurate. So... I would say that your husband and two of your children have *0201, one of the major celiac genes. I don't think a gene can mutate from parent to child. -
ARCHIVED Looking For gluten-free/non Dairy Appetizers For Thanksgiving
Mother of Jibril replied to Redsd's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
How about vegetables? Carrot sticks, celery, broccoli, etc... Hummus makes a nice GFCFSF dip. At parties I find that the healthy/vegetarian stuff disappears really fast. Orange wedges would be nice. Pomegranates are in season and look SO beautiful cracked open. You could use them as part of an edible centerpiece. Small bunches of grapes are yummy... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Know What To Eat And Lots Of Questions
Mother of Jibril replied to clnewberry1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the group! A negative result on a celiac panel doesn't rule it out. Also, allergies are different from intolerances. A skin prick test is for allergies... a IgE reaction that causes your body to produce histamines (this happens quickly... within minutes or a few hours). An intolerance is a delayed IgA or IgG reaction that causes your body... -
ARCHIVED Potatoe Chips

I like Terra Chips Most of them are only seasoned with sea salt, but do check the ingredients. -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Interpret My Test Result?
Mother of Jibril replied to driedupfish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Let's see... I went off gluten about a month after I was diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism, but here are the symptoms that seemed to be most closely connected to my food intolerances... - lots of pain in my lower abdomen - bloating, fluid retention - constant flatulence - constipation, rectal bleeding - stinky, oily, floating feces ... -
ARCHIVED Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
Mother of Jibril replied to kimis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've read that there lots of possible triggers for Hashimoto's... viruses, bacteria, puberty, pregnancy, trauma, food intolerances, etc... The strangest might be microchimerism; apparently, fetal cells have been found in the thyroids of people with Graves disease and Hashimoto's. That could explain why these disorders are 10X more common in women and why... -
ARCHIVED Itchy, Puffy, Bloodshot Eyes
Mother of Jibril replied to Laurenlovespink's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hopefully, you've been using the same brand of makeup for years... not the exact same packages! Allergies and autoimmune disorders can both flare, depending on the season, what you're eating, how much stress you're under, etc... It's not necessarily an environmental allergy causing the problem. It could be a food intolerance/allergy like gluten intolerance... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Really Understand Casein Intolerance
Mother of Jibril replied to RollingAlong's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think the confusion comes from casein vs. lactose. Celiacs tend to have problems with dairy because they stop producing lactase (the enzyme that digests lactose, the main sugar in milk). Foods that are low in lactose... like hard cheese and yogurt... are fine. This can be a short-term intolerance. Once your intestines heal, you might be fine. Other... -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Results ?
Mother of Jibril replied to magicchance's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm a bit confused myself... DQ2 is one of the main genes for celiac, although to know your risk you'd have to know the alpha portion of that gene. There's a big difference between DQ2.5 and DQ2.2. It is possible, with that gene alone, that you could have celiac disease. Have you done any other tests? If "0603" is your other gene (DQ6), that's actually... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results In!
Mother of Jibril replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's how I felt when I got my genetic results too... it explains SO much! Have you ever considered giving dairy-free a try? It might reduce your sinus congestion. Also, some people with pollen and grass allergies are intolerant to related foods... pears, peaches, plums, berries, melons, citrus, etc... What happens is that your body mistakes those... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Interpret My Test Result?
Mother of Jibril replied to driedupfish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What has your diet been like... lots of gluten, gluten-lite, gluten-free...? I had exactly the same value on my ttG after being gluten-free for six weeks. I can't say for sure that I have celiac disease (that my intestines were being damaged by an autoimmune reaction to gluten), but I do have one of the genes for celiac and I had a VERY positive response... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results In!
Mother of Jibril replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IMO, this is where you get your money's worth from Enterolab; the results on the genetic test are just as reliable as any other lab. A LOT of physical and mental health problems in my extended family can be traced back to the DQ genes. DQ5 puts you at risk for IBS, Chron's disease, and Guillain-Barre syndrome. DQ7 puts you at risk for gluten intolerance... -

Saturday I had Peruvian food It's based around seafood and potatoes... great for a Gluten-free Casein-free person! I had lots of items to choose from. If you like seafood, sushi is another great option. Just skip the soy sauce or bring your own.

ARCHIVED Casein-free Replacement For Cheese
Mother of Jibril replied to kempy99's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My breastfed son is VERY sensitive to casein, but dairy products from other animals (goats, sheep, etc...) have different proteins. I use a bit of goat cheese when I have pizza... it doesn't bother him! -
ARCHIVED Food Allergies Other Than Gluten
Mother of Jibril replied to Dedrasmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Exactly... food allergies are IgE reactions that cause you body to create histamines. Food intolerances are IgA or IgG reactions that cause your body to produce antigens. Both are dangerous! It's just a lot more difficult to test for food intolerances. -
ARCHIVED Food Allergies Other Than Gluten
Mother of Jibril replied to Dedrasmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What kind of symptoms has your daughter been having? If the reaction is severe... especially if it interferes with her breathing... then it's totally appropriate to see an allergist. If her reaction is not severe or if it's a delayed reaction (a food intolerance is different from a food allergy), then you'll get much better information by trying an elimination... -
ARCHIVED Starbucks New Signature Hot Chocolates
Mother of Jibril replied to LLatham's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can ask them to clean the steam wand and use a clean pitcher when they make your drink. I think that was the conclusion on the thread you mentioned If you're really sensitive to CC, better to stick with something simple like tea or plain coffee. -
ARCHIVED Hla-dq Results Interpretation
Mother of Jibril replied to clr18287's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I do think there's some truth to the idea that cravings indicate your intolerances.. I would LOVE a nice toasted cheese sandwich if I knew it wouldn't make me sick That's the one thing I really miss. BUT... tomatoes and chocolate also have lots of antioxidants. What if that's why you were craving them? Personally, I would try putting one food at a time... -

Wow! OK... so here's a link to the HLA-DR page on Wikipedia: Open Original Shared Link I've read a little bit about DR4... it's linked to both DQ7 and DQ8 (lucky me... I have both of those) and it puts you at risk for lupus, RA, type I diabetes, and MS... so that explains a lot Some thoughts about your eating habits... 1. How did...
