  1. Lately I've been eating rice cereal, which is like oatmeal or grits (just made of rice). Bob's Red Mill has one that's gluten-free. For the liquid I use almond milk and then I add raisins, nuts (sliced almonds, hazelnuts), and a bit of real maple syrup. Yum! Cinnamon would be a nice addition too.
  2. Yes... I've done a fair amount of reading about this. There are basically three kinds of PAS. Type 1 is rare and usually develops in childhood; the main features are Addison's disease and hypoparathyroidism, both caused by autoimmune organ damage Open Original Shared Link Type 2 is also called "Schmidt's syndrome" and involves Addison's plus...
  3. Mmmm... I tried a brand of coconut yogurt, but it had a weird grainy texture. Homemade yogurt from coconut milk sounds lovely I'll search for the instructions. Yes! Exactly!!! I have no doubt that my dry skin is making the dandruff much worse. I'm seeing a new PCP next month and I'm going to ask to be tested for Sjogren's antibodies...
  4. That's true, but let's consider the reasons that someone would have hypothyroidism that was not autoimmune... treatment for Graves disease that went too far, thyroid cancer, removal of the thyroid, being born without a thyroid, or being exposed to massive amounts of radiation. In any of these cases... I think you'd be aware of the problem! It's the autoimmune...
  5. I also have my doubts about the shampoo... as you say, even if it works the flakes on my scalp are bound to come back Thankfully, I've never had a yeast infection in my genital area (as far as I know... I assume I would know), but my tongue is always coated and the itchy, flaky scalp has been a problem for at least ten years. Yikes. Of course the...
  6. Yeah... I was thinking something along those lines. I'm already off gluten, dairy, and corn. I eat quite a lot of eggs Omelets and hard boiled eggs are so easy... and safe on the rare occasions I go to a restaurant. Plus a lot of the gluten-free goodies have eggs. I guess I could give it a try. Eggs have always bothered my dad. Do you remember...
  7. Hi Michelle, I'm so sorry about your mother! I hope all of the positive changes you're making will help lighten your load physically and mentally. Grief is really draining. I just wanted to welcome you to the group and add my $0.02... the gluten-free diet made a HUGE improvement in my symptoms, but I felt even better once I stopped eating corn...
  8. I wrote in with the same question a few weeks ago... your advice is exactly what worked for me! More nuts and other healthy fats, more protein, B vitamins, and more calcium. I think I was also doing a bit of emotional eating I had just realized that gluten-free was no longer an "experiment" for me but a life-long requirement. Chocolate gives your...
  9. Unfortunately, I do have two ideas... Sjogren's syndrome can cause difficulty swallowing due to lack of saliva (dry mouth, dry throat). Myasthenia gravis can weaken the muscles around your esophagus. Both of these are autoimmune disorders, but Sjogren's is more common.
  10. Friday I had an appointment with my dermatologist. My skin is looking SO much better these days! The rash on my butt and my hands has gone away. The acne around my jawline went away... even my rosacea is looking better. The dermatologist agreed that my face is not as red (although it's still a bit pink)... then she looked at my hair and said, "Wow......
  11. Well that's useful news! Food allergies are nothing to mess around with. However... keep in mind that food allergies and food intolerances are two different things. Food allergies are IgE reactions that cause your body to produce histamines (which lead to rashes, breathing difficulties, etc...). These reactions happen within a few minutes or hours...
  12. This is a tiny point, but yes... At first, iodine might help kick your thyroid up a notch, but as it burns out (from the continuing autoimmune attack) it doesn't have anything left to give! If your thyroid has been destroyed, no vitamin or mineral supplement is going to help. The good news... thyroid medication is CHEAP. It's not like having diabetes...
  13. If you have an autoimmune disorder... and celiac is one of them... it means that your body is reacting to some "foreign" object in your bloodstream. This could be undigested particles of food (gluten and dairy are common culprits), bacteria, a virus, fetal cells, etc... This is what your immune system is designed to do, however... in people with autoimmune...
  14. Welcome to the group! One bite is definitely enough to cause a reaction. And now that you know how you react... I bet you won't be eating any more gluten on purpose!
  15. Don't do it!!!!!!!!!! The major risks of cheating if you have celiac disease are cancer and other autoimmune disorders. Be grateful that you're not debilitated by your symptoms and move forward on the road to health!! And by the way... it's not that hard to make gluten-free pizza. This forum has TONS of great ideas for alternatives to any food you...
  16. I see mucus in my stool when I get glutened By the way... the normal range for IgA is about 100-400. Have you ever been tested for lupus? When was the last time you had a CBC and a metabolic panel? Autoimmune disorders tend to cluster. With such a high IgA I wouldn't be suprised if you have additional problems going on.
  17. I agree that more testing is in order. Problems like vitamin deficiencies and autoimmune disorders can affect a child's intellectual development. Also... have you laid out these ideas for your husband and asked what kind of evidence would convince him that your son has a gluten problem? My husband doesn't question the fact that my son is intolerant...
  18. Another reason to see a PCP is because the "stomach discomfort" could be something else... an ulcer, too much stomach acid (or not enough), stomach cancer, etc... What led you to seek testing for celiac disease? Is there more besides your stomach symptoms?
  19. We do most of our shopping at a local co-op... lots of organic and local products. They just started labeling the shelves with little gluten-free and DF stickers, so that makes it easier to spot things... although I still read the labels just to make sure (plus there's no "corn free" sticker ). I also discovered that one of the ethnic stores (Lebanese...
  20. Oh yeah... keys and coins!! And metal railings on the playground at school. Ugh. No wonder I had a lot of colds... I was putting all kinds of nasty things in my mouth. My daughter has been really healthy, but I catch her doing the same behaviors... We couldn't leave her alone with the playdoh for a long time because she would eat it like a dinner...
  21. I did see that post about keratosis pilaris... very interesting! It sounds exactly like the "arm rash" that other people on this thread have described. I don't think that's what my bumps are though, since I don't have hair follicules around the joints on my hands. The "butt bumps" ARE annoying! The worst for me was taking a bath... it hurt to sit...
  22. What about some chicken soup using rice or rice pasta (Tinkyada) instead of semolina noodles? I bet you could even leave the rice/noodles out... I think the salty broth is the most comforting. Are you able to tolerate dairy? One of the grocery stores in my town stocks macaroni and cheese with rice noodles (gluten-free) in the frozen section. My daughter...
  23. Hey "Missing Licorice," I know this wasn't your question, but I satisfy my taste for licorice with anise-flavored toothpaste (yum!... way better than mint... plus Nature's Gate is free of gluten and flouride). I also love the the "Egyptian Licorice" flavor of Yogi Tea. Licorice is good for satisfying sugar cravings.
  24. Welcome to the group! Two things come to mind... a thyroid disorder and Sjogren's syndrome. The thyroid does a LOT of really important things in your body... it regulates your temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, reproductive hormones, and metabolism. Hypothyroidism can lead to hair loss, weight gain, constipation, feeling cold all the time, fainting...
  25. Well that's some good news at least! The Gluten-free Casein-free is not that difficult or expensive once you get used to it. Here are some simple foods that my three-year-old really likes... - hard boiled eggs - baked "french fries" (cut the potatoes into slices, coat them with olive or canola oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and bake at 375 for...
