ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed- How To Explain It To People
Mother of Jibril replied to Trachellium's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the group! I've been off gluten for three months now, but I'm still working on this. Honestly, I don't go out to eat very much. It's so hard to find things that don't have gluten, dairy, or corn Plus I'm getting more and more sensitive to cross-contamination. Ugh. After I was glutened by some french fries (at a place where the only... -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Casein Intolerance Question?
Mother of Jibril replied to desccc's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hmmm... I don't see how that could be true. I have one of the celiac genes (DQ8), but I also have another gene that can cause intolerance to both gluten and casein (DQ7). I don't think they cancel each other out! In fact, just the opposite. Plus... I was still having some abdominal pain, cramping, and gas after I stopped eating dairy and gluten, but... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-related Infertility Means Celiac?
Mother of Jibril replied to mhb's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That's very frustrating I belong to an online discussion group for people going through pregnancy after a loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, infant death)... I know how hard it is for people in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, etc... to get aggressive medical care, even when something is clearly wrong. It's not normal for your periods to stop at age 29. ... -
ARCHIVED Hla-dq Results Interpretation
Mother of Jibril replied to clr18287's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
ps - Welcome to the group! Also... can I ask which lab did your genetic test? It's interesting to know the alpha genes. -
ARCHIVED Hla-dq Results Interpretation
Mother of Jibril replied to clr18287's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes... the B1*0302 gene is DQ8, one of the main genes for celiac disease. You're also have pretty rare type of DQ6, which is a gluten sensitive gene. Wikipedia has a useful chart: Open Original Shared Link There could be several reasons for your negative blood panel... 1. You don't have celiac disease. Having the gene doesn't mean you automatically... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-related Infertility Means Celiac?
Mother of Jibril replied to mhb's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It's my understanding that celiac disease (and other autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto's, type I diabetes, Addison's disease, etc...) can be associated with premature ovarian failure caused by your immune system attacking your ovaries Have you ever been to a reproductive endocrinologist? Fertility can go downhill really quickly... I would look for a... -
ARCHIVED Undigested Food
Mother of Jibril posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ok... so maybe this is no big deal, but I am curious. My son is nine months old and starting to eat finger food. He's off dairy, gluten, and corn (no more eczema!) and so am I. Casein was doing a lot of damage to his intestines... I took him to the pediatrician when he started having blood in his diapers. That was back in April. I've read that infants... -
ARCHIVED Autoimmune Disease. Seizures W/ Celiac
Mother of Jibril replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My sister developed a seizure disorder when she was in seventh grade. She started zoning out in class... and then at the dinner table. Very strange. Her eyes would be open and she would keep chewing, but if you said something to her she wouldn't respond. My parents took her to a neurologist and they gave her an MRI, but it didn't show anything. Since... -
ARCHIVED Lactose - Casein Intolerance
Mother of Jibril replied to odcdinah's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Dinah, Yes. A day or two later is common with any kind of food intolerance including casein. That's what can make it so tricky to tell if you have one -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Help Me Sort Out What's What?
Mother of Jibril replied to DarkIvy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You're absolutely right that a lot of people just don't get it I went through a severe depression two years ago after losing a baby when I was four months pregnant. I was OK for the first couple of months, but then I started having problems with insomnia (for the first time ever) and things quickly went downhill. I could hardly get off the couch.... -
ARCHIVED Canned Mushrooms - What Gives?
Mother of Jibril replied to 006's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Actually, that's only true in southern China and southeast Asia. In northern China people eat a lot of wheat. You could be right, however, that the company can't guarantee gluten-free from all suppliers. There could be cross-contamination from other products. -
ARCHIVED Traumatic Or Early Birth And Celiac
Mother of Jibril replied to B'sgirl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son has a severe intolerance to casein and his birth was very gentle. He was born at 39 weeks, 5 days... very healthy, 8lb. 4oz. I didn't have an epidural or any other drugs... only pushed for about 15 minutes, no interventions (no forceps, no suction, etc...). I suspect he inherited my DQ7 gene, which can cause both gluten intolerance and casein... -
ARCHIVED Greek Food
Mother of Jibril replied to tkm831's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They shouldn't be. Gyro meat is beef and lamb. Tzatziki is made from yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, and mint. But... you never know. Best to call ahead if you're going to a restaurant. -
If a biopsy proves that a rash is DH (based on IgA deposits), that gives you an automatic celiac diagnosis regardless of any other symptoms. Eczema (AD) is itchy too. If I eat even the tiniest bit of casein, my breastfeed son gets eczema with little red bumps right across his cheeks My three-year-old daughter also had eczema as a baby (on her legs...

ARCHIVED Kind Of Confused, Could Use Some Expert Help
Mother of Jibril replied to brendab's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That has definitely been my experience... after giving birth my autoimmune problems flare up BIG TIME. All the symptoms of hypothyroidism (feeling cold, depression, anxiety, hair loss, constipation) and celiac (weight loss without dieting, abdominal pain, gas, terrible bloating), plus joint pain...especially in my shoulders and knees... which makes me worried... -
ARCHIVED Eye Problems?
Mother of Jibril replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
So... after a few a days, I can say that the eye drops are GOOD. Ahhhh... I didn't realize just how bad my eyes were feeling! I also picked up some gel yesterday. Thanks for that tip And... I remembered another potential reason for my dry eyes... ocular rosacea (which happens in 50-60% of people with rosacea). Some people get dilated blood vessels... -
ARCHIVED Erythrasma - Need Advice
Mother of Jibril replied to SurreyGirl2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had stretch marks around my hips and breasts when I developed very rapidly as a teenager. I don't think that's a sign of a weakened immune system. But... have you considered that your son might have another food intolerance (like casein, for example)? Or maybe he's just under a lot of stress? That can really wear your immune system down. Three... -
ARCHIVED For Those That Avoid Corn
Mother of Jibril replied to ShayFL's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I stopped eating conventional (non-organic) meat after I saw the movie "Life and Debt." I decided I didn't want to be part of a system that exploits people and animals in such a horrible way. (The segment about chickens is at the end of the movie... but the whole thing is very thought-provoking). And... now I have even more reasons to avoid that kind... -
ARCHIVED Vitamins
Mother of Jibril replied to DianeBinNY's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's easy to feel discouraged when you're starting a new diet and a new lifestyle Since you live so far north, I would recommend trying Vitamin D... especially if you've noticed that you feel more upbeat in the summer (I do ). Check out this website: Open Original Shared Link I agree with Momma Goose... before you go trying lots of supplements... -
ARCHIVED What In The World Could It Be?
Mother of Jibril replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
To answer your questions... I agree that medications can often cause more problems than they're worth. BUT... since I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism I had to start taking synthetic hormones. It's not really a drug. It's just a replacement for what my body would have been making naturally if my immune system hadn't destroyed my thyroid. Being... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab
Mother of Jibril replied to angelschick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For me, it took eight days between the time I ordered the test and the time Enterolab received the swabs with my cheek cells. After that, it took another 2 1/2 weeks to get the results. -
ARCHIVED What In The World Could It Be?
Mother of Jibril replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Welcome to the group! I have a few thoughts for you... 1. Have you seen a doctor about your concerns? A rash could be an allergic reaction, but flaky (dry?) skin is not... that sounds more like rosacea, hypothyroidism, a vitamin deficiency, etc... 2. Diet is very important, but not the only thing that affects your mental health. Changes in mood... -
ARCHIVED Employment Issues, Celiacs And The Ada, Any Ideas
Mother of Jibril replied to Smiling-Eyes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been thinking about this since you posted the question Even with the ADA, it's really a complicated issue! I'm blessed to be a faculty member at a large, public university. Small employers are not required to make a lot of accommodations because of the "unfair burden" clause. That being said... after giving birth in February I was given... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Help Me Sort Out What's What?
Mother of Jibril replied to DarkIvy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Try starting with small things to pamper yourself... a nap, a hot shower, a cup of tea... maybe your boyfriend could rub your feet. Shopping and writing a book can be really fun, but those activities take energy. Also... have you ever had your thyroid checked? That could partly explain the fatigue, depression, and heavy, irregular periods. I tried... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Help Me Sort Out What's What?
Mother of Jibril replied to DarkIvy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi DarkIvy, I'm so sorry for the mess you're in! What a vicious cycle. I was at a really horrible place in my life two years ago, suffering from grief and severe depression... plus undiagnosed hypothyroidism and a vitamin D deficiency. It can feel SO hopeless The most important thing I learned is to get my priorities straight and focus...
