  1. I haven't had my PTH or Vitamin D levels checked... but I wouldn't be surprised if my Vitamin D is low. I don't spend a lot of time outside. About two years ago (for religious reasons) I started wearing more clothing, so the only skin that's really exposed is my face, neck, hands, and feet (if I don't wear socks). Would it be a bad idea to start taking...
  2. Good point about gulping... I let down really fast. I have hypothyroidism and I've read that it can increase your prolactin levels (the hormone that stimulates breastmilk). I agree there are other things that can cause pain/crying and they're worth exploring. You mentioned that your daugther is bloated and gassy. Does she have other signs of intolerance...
  3. I went to Macalester College and then the University of Minnesota for graduate school. I was SO stubborn about dairy. Even though I felt like I was going to die every time I had a BM, I just could not envision a world without cheese. I stopped drinking milk for a while, but I slowly started eating cheese... then yogurt, and finally (after about six...
  4. My son is seven months old and has a severe intolerance to cow's milk. I wasn't even feeding him formula! The reaction was to the proteins getting through my breastmilk. Everything was fine for about the first three weeks. Then his poo started turning green. By six weeks he was projectile vomiting, crying all the time (for hours until he would fall asleep...
  5. I just posted a note about this earlier today... I grew up in Wisconsin and freely admit to being a cheesehead! All of my grandparents were raised on dairy farms. I also lived in Minnesota for ten years while I was going to college and graduate school. Ironically, my son is intolerant to casein I'm hoping I can have some dairy products again...
  6. In July I had a comprehensive physical. My doctor did a lipid panel, metabolic panel, CBC, and TSH. Thank goodness, because my TSH was way out of normal. Anyway... the only other level that came back abnormal was my alkaline phosphatase. The lab that does the testing considers "normal" to be 33-115 U/L, my level was 125. The doctor brushed it off...
  7. Have you ever had your thyroid (TSH level) checked? Hypothyroidism often causes weight problems because it slows down your metabolism. It's easy (just a blood test) and pretty inexpensive.
  8. Iodine is bad for people who have autoimmune thyroid conditions. The thyroid is a magnet for iodine... it can cause further damage to an already-damaged organ.
  9. I'm thinking of trying my three-year-old daughter on a gluten-free diet too, but I just wanted to give you another suggestion when thinking about your step-son's behavior... My daughter is VERY active. She has been since the day she was born. My mom calls her "the Energizer Bunny." I found a great book about this... "Living With the Active, Alert...
  10. Tell me about it! I'm from Wisconsin... all of my grandparents were raised on dairy farms. My immediate family (just four people) would go through several gallons of milk a week. I'm doing better the longer I go without dairy, but there are days when I crave a piece of cheese. I don't mind having soy milk or almond milk on my cereal... soy yogurt...
  11. I think it's the cocoa mix that has traces of milk. I asked if they could use soy milk and they said, "Sorry... we can only make our regular hot chocolate dairy-free."
  12. I wanted to try one of the new signature hot chocolates (they used to have this super-rich chocolate drink that I LOVED)... but I found out they can't make them dairy-free
  13. Hi Meigha, I'm so sorry that you've been struggling with fertility problems. Although I'm also intolerant to gluten, have a severe case of autoimmune hypothyroidism (which I'm pretty sure I've had since I was a teenager), and lost a pregnancy at 17 weeks, I also have two living children who were born before and after the loss. I know it's really...
  14. Wow!! I am especially stunned about the "short 5th finger"... I was diagnosed with a severe case of hypothyroidism in August. Looking back, I definitely had symptoms by the time I was a teenager. My dad just found out that he has hypothyroidism too. I also had a pregnancy loss at 17 weeks. This is a really unusual time to have a loss... the...
  15. I've been off gluten for about a month and half... I love the Tinkyada rice pasta! As long as you don't overcook it, I don't think you can tell the difference from regular (semolina) pasta. It even reheats nicely if you put leftovers in the refrigerator. I've also been trying some new bars for on-the-go snacking (I used to eat Clif bars, but they...
  16. I'm sorry you did not get the response you wanted from your mom, but try not to give up hope too soon... it just might take some time for her to come around. My mom suffers from a lot of health problems that I think are gluten-related... diabetes, fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic pain in her knees and back, IBS, depression... she's also had her gallbladder...
  17. Hmmm... good point. My daughter has been looking forward to Halloween all year. We don't celebrate Christmas and I cook all the food for Thanksgiving (my husband could care less about it... he's from West Africa). Sweet potatoes, cranberries, and turkey are deliciously gluten-free. I've improved my diet a lot in the last five years and my husband...
  18. My daughter is three years old. She had eczema (on her cheeks and legs) as a baby. She also seems to have a leaky gut. Last week I had a moment of panic... she wears pull-ups at night and in the morning I noticed her pee was orange! I started thinking about UTIs, and then I realized she had eaten a bunch of Cheetohs the day before. Anyway... she has...
  19. I'm just getting used to the whole idea of cross-contamination Friday I ate at Qdoba's... I even checked their tortilla soup mix in advance to make sure it didn't have gluten! And then I went to Starbucks and had a hot chocolate with soy milk and hazelnut syrup. Ugh. The constipation is back and today I have a headache. Since you've been a...
  20. Hi Christopher, I went to an allergist (an osteopathic doctor) with complaints about digestive problems. My son's digestive system can't handle cow's milk... after I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started reading about the suspected causes of autoimmune disorders it dawned on me that maybe I was having a reaction to one or more foods too. Nothing...
  21. I did know that antibiotics show up in the meat of conventional farm animals... that's one reason I eat organic. The A1/A2 milk issue is new to me, but it makes sense. I have tried goat's milk a few times and it doesn't seem to affect my son... I love goat's milk cheese and it's nice to have a treat once in a while The doctorj website could...
  22. Since I was a kid, I've had some kind of rash on my buttocks... both sides. I remember my parents telling me "not to scratch" a lot, but the last few years I only notice when I have a blister that pops or it hurts when I'm sitting on a hard chair/bench. Could this be DH? Everything I've been reading says that DH is "intensely itchy"... this rash is just...
  23. Is it possible to have digestive problems (cramps, bloating, gas, constipation, etc...) that dramatically improved on a gluten-free diet, but not have celiac disease? Last week I had a celiac panel done (tTG, EMA), but it came back negative. I wasn't really surprised... I had already been off gluten for five weeks. I had been planning to try the diet...
  24. If you're consuming some gluten and your daughter is sensitive to it, I wouldn't be surprised if that's why your daughter is having a reaction. I had to stop eating dairy products because my son has a severe intolerance to casein. Within a week he was much better, after a few more weeks he was completely back to normal. I had no idea such things could...
  25. If your daughter is short of breath within 24 hours after ingesting dairy, that sounds an allergy (IgE reaction). You could take her to allergist for a skin test... it should be easy to diagnose. My son has a severe intolerance to casein. He was fine when he was born, but by the time he was six weeks old he was vomiting, crying all the time, and had...
