  1. Well, I know "allergy" is not correct, but "auto-immune disease" doesn't make as tidy a sound bite. I mean, it's like eating out and getting the bill and it says "allergy alert." Technically not correct but better than nothing so long as they got my order right. Plus there are a LOT of people that I've met who give me the blank stare when I say auto-immune...
  2. Ok I know I'm being the impatient one here, but how long does it usually take to get gene results back? They got my cheek swab on the 18th. They say to give them 3 weeks but I'm hoping that's just them trying to give themselves wiggle room when they get swamped with orders. And now that I've posted this I'll probably get it tomorrow. Funny how those...
  3. I just ordered a gene test from Enterolab for $149. It's a lot more merciful on the wallet! You might check it out. enterolab.com
  4. I had a negative blood test 10 years ago, then recently just went gluten-free on my own and voila! Felt infinitely better! I thought maybe I should get retested this year and my doc wasn't interested. He said "if it bothers you, don't eat it." And my Naturopath said "you can if you want that diagnosis on paper, but why bother?" A gluten-free diet...
  5. To be honest, I don't know exactly what antibodies they tested. They just ran a 'standard' thyroid antibody test...standard for their office. My doctor tends to be more thorough than most, but I didn't ask what they tested for. They just told me it's not autoimmune. I take Armour which works great. The only part I hate is the waiting 30 mins to have...
  6. I know. It's hard. Sometimes friends make fun because they care and sometimes they make fun because they're just jerks. Only you can know for sure since we haven't met them. My best friends in high school made fun of me because I was the tall right-handed one and they were all short and left-handed. Totally arbitrary and it was because they were the...
  7. You're a good mom and I bet it's a huge relief to know for sure that it's Celiac. I remember when my niece was so sick--starving to death--and they didn't know what it was. they'd fight all the time...amongst themselves, with the doctors... They were so terrified for her but once they found it it was Celiac for sure, everything got so much better for my...
  8. I think I had symptoms before my pregnancy but didn't recognize it. I was pretty much gluten free until a couple months before I got pregnant. Then during my pregnancy I found I could eat what I wanted without consequence (or so I thought)...until they diagnosed me with gestational diabetes. Then it was back to the low-carb high-protein diet again. I...
  9. What do I check? Everything. Everything I put in my mouth or put on my hands that might go in my mouth.. Everything.. Food, lotion...Every ingredient of every product I buy in the store. Even what my son might touch that might end up on my face or on something I might put in my mouth. And when he sleeps in our bed and starts flailing his arms I think...
  10. I'm 32 and was just diagnosed a few months ago. But it was not sudden. I've had this all my life. Pancakes always made me sick and everyone told me I was crazy because of course pancakes don't do that to people. I remember being really young growing up in New England where maple syrup is king and being scoffed at because the pancake breakfasts put me off...
  11. Pituitary...hm that's interesting. I'd like to learn more. I was tested for autoimmune hypothyroid but I don't' have it. Just low output and high input until I'm on thyroid meds. Then my thyroid is normal. Still, as a Neuroscience major, I'm always interested in learning more about the brain. EDIT: ok I know I had high TSH so it was my thyroid...
  12. I have neuro symptoms, too. Fatigue, sleep attacks, weakness, temporary full-body paralysis that can last hours, non-epileptic seizure-like episodes (alternating with paralysis), feeling like my body splits in half and my left and right halves switch sides or float around, depression, panic attacks, slight balance issues, dizziness, severe brain fog, confusion...
  13. Tallforagirl. I'm only going to say this once. Stop being so judgmental of people who are more sensitive than you. Especially since you are apparently not that sensitive at all. I've had enough! Your replies are inappropriate and they need to stop. I will not argue with you about this. Say what you want in response, I will not reply. That is all....
  14. I guess I'm lucky that I live in Portland, OR, where special diets are the norm. I've never had a problem in a restaurant at any hour. I go to Red Robin for lunch so often they know me by sight and I don't even have to ask for the gluten-free menu...they just go and get it. lol I don't think it's acceptable for a restaurant to go lax on the allergen...
  15. Of course we can give each other elbow room. And I still totally agree with you. I'm one of those super sensitive gluten-intolerants, too, so I totally hear where you're coming from! I know I have more concerns about CC and packaging than others and I really appreciate it when less sensitive Celiacs understand why I have to be a little extra paranoid about...
  16. I agree, Mike. But as for wine, I have not had much problem with it, even the cheap foreign ones. I am very sensitive to gluten but I just haven't had much problem. I have been trying to stick to American wines since I found out about the wheat paste thing, but honestly how does one find out how the wine is made without taking a tour? E-mailing the companies...
  17. Often diagnosis is made from a combination of positive diet results and genetic predisposition. The blood test and bioposy aren't always 100% and every doctor seems to have a different preference for diagnosis. But I agree with ang1e...it sounds like you already have a diagnosis. You're way ahead of me with a positive blood test. You can order the gene...
  18. I make the Ghiradelli butter cream frosting from the recipe on the back of the can but I use Baker's Sugar (it's more refined so the frosting is smoother) and I only use 1 cup of it. You have to let the cake cool before you put the frosting on or it will melt. It is delicious! However, please check that the cocoa powder is corn-free first. Corn is one...
  19. I only have one son and am going through some of the same issues as you are with your 3 yr old. I know that anyone with an immediate relative diagnosed with Celiac should be tested on a regular basis for it, so your kids should probably have a blood test done every few years. My son has not had a blood test done yet but I will mention it at his next appt...
  20. You're totally right that it's not a substitute for a blood test/endoscopy. For me, it helps me because I don't want to go back on gluten to have the other tests done because I get so sick. Plus I'm dealing with more than one autoimmune disorder that seem to overlap the gluten intolerance and I have some questions about the two that I feel a genetic test...
  21. I sent my sample in to Enterolab this week. I don't care what they call it as long as the right genes are tested. I can figure it out from there. The price is right and I don't have to give the info to the insurance company if I don't want to. I'm just hoping they find something because I have some questions I want answered.
  22. I have only ever used Light Mountain with excellent results and no problems. I have somewhat longer hair so I use 2 boxes at a time. 2 boxes of red 1/4 cup honey enough hot water to make it a medium-thick paste (you don't want it too dry or too runny...think mud!) [remember to use only wood and plastic -- NO METAL!] I apply it to my roots...
  23. The Hall & Nimbus one. I did not get sick from any CC.
  24. You could be right. I have no idea. All I know is that if you buy "black" henna pre-made in the package, it's got a nasty chemical in it. Making your own black is a different story.
  25. It's soooo good! Eating their pizza was pure ecstacy for me! It's a tad pricey but worth every penny. And I did not get sick at all. The manager at my local Garlic Jims has a nephew with Celiac so that makes me feel more at ease about CC issues.
