  1. zomg Sweet Life has gluten-free stuff?? Oh I wish I knew when I lived there! (I wasn't gluten-free yet...just avoiding grains in general) Gawd they have the most awesome cakes ever. We used to get them for office birthdays before I went gluten-free. drool
  2. I agree. We just saw this year's Christmas Special and it made me cry. I hope the new doctor on 2010 is as good as the current one. He's my favorite!
  3. L-Tyrosine is a great help, too. My naturopath recommended it and it helped me immensely. I took 500-1000 mg/day. As I spend more and more time gluten free, I find I don't really need it so much anymore, which is great.
  4. I, too, would feel irresponsible if I didn't test my son for some aspect of celiac. My brother has it, one of his daughters has it, and I'm pretty sure I have it, although I couldn't find a doctor to test me before I went gluten-free and won't go back on gluten to get tested. Too many neurological problems! My mom reminded me over Chistmas that it took...
  5. Boy I know what you mean with all the frustration. I'm no stranger to food intolerances, but the amount of memorization and research that has to go into every single little gluten-free meal, snack, or whatever is enough to drive anyone mad. I've only been doing this for a month and I'm sure it gets easier. It must. But yeah I hate being "that girl" too...
  6. Oh wow thanks for the tip! That looks like heaven to me. I can't wait to take a trip up there. And I love the list of celiac-friendly restaurants on their website. Very handy! Do you have any that you recommend closer to Beaverton? My coworkers always go out to lunch for birthdays and I want to find one this year that I can eat at before my birthday...
  7. Thanks! I'm in Beaverton and I have tried the Fred Meyer's in town. I love their gluten-free sections and they actually have employees who have tried the foods and can make recommendations. The FM in SE Portland even had chocolate Glutino cookies and chocolate peppermint soy nog for xmas. Oooooh so yummy! Freds blows Safeway out of the water when it...
  8. Dang it I hate it when I reply to a post and forget and reply again. It's so embarrassing!
  9. For me it's my weight and my level of alertness. I gained weight on gluten, so if I'm losing, I'm doing well. I even graph it out on the computer to remind myself that when I feel like I'm losing ground that I'm actually making progress. When I accidentally gluten myself, I gain for a few days, then go back to where I was pre-gluten and slowly lose again...
  10. Well, tallforagirl, the leaky gluten bags were right next to the leaky gluten-free bags. If both leak, and some of us are super sensitive to gluten, it does sound dangerous, doesn't it? Sure if they're in nicely sealed plastic surrounded by a nice cardboard box, it might be ok, but these were both leaky paper sacs. Bad news imho. I certainly won't be...
  11. The gargle was just salt water. And I used hydrogen peroxide once (diluted, of course.) The belated xmas dinner was fabulous last night! It was 100% gluten free. I must have my family under some spell because they forgot to buy rolls! haha We even had gluten-free gravy. My brother-in-law-to-be did an amazing job with the potato starch!! I haven...
  12. Haha, ok I'll bite. (no pun intended) I'm new to gluten-free eating but I have one that was probably mostly my fault for cooking it wrong: Bob's Red Mill Brownie Mix First I tried using a mixer to mix them. zomg! Big mistake! The entire batter instantly melded into a giant solid ball of chocolate and clung to the top of the mixer. So I got out a...
  13. If you go off the Klonopin, taper really really slowly! I was on 1mg/day for a year my Narcolepsy (actually cataplexy) (also very gluten-related) and it took me 6 mos. to taper at 10%/wk. When I did more, the panic attacks, edema, etc. were unbearable. Of course, it was because of the taper that I tried a gluten-free diet to control the edema and happened...
  14. Well I spent the night at my sister's to see my parents who are visiting from out of town. I was worried about CC in her kitchen or someone's feelings getting hurt if I made a request, but my family was so awesome and supportive! They made sure they did every little thing per my instructions and asked lots of questions to make sure they got it right...
  15. If I understand the diagnostics, a positive biopsy would show up in advanced stages of Celiac. A lot of damage has to be done before they can find atrophied villi. They also might have happened to take it from a healthier part of your intestine and missed it. If you have positive antibodies, that should be enough indication that you need to go on the diet...
  16. That's great that you have support from your Dr. What a blessing! I'm kind of doing this on my own. My Dr.'s office is too skeptical of such things. But I don't care. I feel soooooo much better gluten-free I'm NEVER going back! Screw 'em! Haha!
  17. Omg that doctor sucks. Don't go! What a lazy bum! I hope the diet works for you. and rotfl @ happy pooh year. hehe gross.
  18. yeah sounds like mucus. fatty stools look like someone coated them with oil and they're super sticky. they look greasy. oily. when I went 100% gluten-free, I was excreting mucus for a couple days. just mucus, nothing else. It was weird. like my intestines were coated with mucus and when the gluten went away, my intestines decided to shed it all and...
  19. Yeah I wash my hands before I put Carmex on my lips. Just in case! My son still eats gluten, and one day I made a comment about the gluten in his food. He said "No, we don't have any gluten! It's all gone!" Oh wouldn't that be nice? A gluten-free world? The little bugger contaminated my marshmallows. Darn him. His gluten days are numbered, I...
  20. OMG I'm in Beaverton, OR and I still can't get my car out of the parking lot after a week and a half. My parents have been in Portland for 3 days and I still haven't seen them. I haven't seen them for over a year. My son wants to go to the zoo. My local bus line just started running again today. I just got some Christmas presents in the mail today, a...
  21. I used to get bad foot cramps my entire life. My toes would cross each other it was so bad. Sometimes it went all the way up my calves and hurt the tendon in the back of my knee joint. I'd have to wake up in the middle of the night and stand on the cramps to make them go away. Taking calcium supplements helped a lot. Since going gluten-free, I haven...
  22. I want to make a cake for my son for his birthday next week and I want to make it gluten-free so I can eat it too. It would mean a lot to me. But I can't tolerate rice. Does anyone know of a good flour mix that doesn't contain rice or gluten? Soy, corn, sorghum, and potato are A-okay. Thanks in advance!
  23. Thanks so much for sharing. I will certainly try this as soon as I'm comfortable baking again. (I have like a baking phobia or something...years of avoiding grains not knowing it was mostly just gluten...lol)
  24. My rice reaction happens within 5 minutes of eating it. Puts me right to sleep. It's like some reaction happens in my mouth as I'm chewing. More like a 'real' food allergy (what IS real, anyway? lol) All of my food sensitivities are this way except for gluten. My gluten reaction is like the typical Celiac thing. Maybe I could eat rice if I didn't have...
  25. My boyfriend and son are great about it but my mom, though well-intentioned, is easily hurt by anything. She's gone on and on about how hurt she was when my sister-in-law got mad about her using the wrong butter at their house to butter her toast 2 years ago (they have Celiac, too.) To be honest, I don't think my sister-in-law actually even got very mad...
