  1. Maybe you need to draw a line in the sand. Make it clear to yourself and to your husband what you are and are not comfortable doing. Maybe you will provide gluten free meals in the house but what he puts in his mouth outside of the house is on him. You will not order for him or cut up his meat and spoon feed him.

If you are actually enjoying learning all this new stuff then you really can't use it as a weapon in your next PMS screaming fit. OK maybe that's just me........ ;)

  2. Are you sure your cold meds are gluten free? My pharmacist (he is well informed about celiacs) suggested I switch to the liquids that are made for children. It worked.

Also, are you using gluten free flours? I found that my system will not tolerate gluten free flours yet. I don't itch but I don't go either and then I have to deal with all the side effects of laxatives. And the whole time my imagination is going wild with thoughts about cancer, diverticulitis, a bag.........the grandchildren I will never see.......I got my drama queen gene from the same side of the family I got my celiacs from

Not a diagnosed celiac, but I was recently diagnosed with a high whole wheat, wheat gluten, and wheat gliadin allergy. However, on the same test I showed no allergies to oats and barley (though I did for rye, spelt, etc.). All the research I've done online shows a chemical similarity between barley and wheat. Should I avoid it even if I don't show an allergy to it?

I was diagnosed with wheat and brewers yeast allergy intially. No allergy to barley, rye or oats. After taking the wheat (I don't drink beer so..) out of my diet I started reacting strongly to oatmeal. I got DH on my knees and elbows and horrible C. That's how we found my celiacs.

  4. Just thought I'd throw in a few other things that can make you hungry........

    corn syrup

    artificial sweeteners

    diet to high in carbs

    diet to low in protein

    not enough fluids

    msg

    some prescription meds

    not enough sleep

    to much sleep

    lack of exercise

    to little sunshine

This could be a long list! The artificial sweeteners are a big one for me.

  5. My co-worker also uses dapsone. He had hive like sores all over his body at one point, even in his eyes, not just on the lids, on his eyes. He takes his dapsone and eats stuff that would kill me like Rice Crispies. He buys a burger at a fast food joint and takes the bun off and throws it away.

He is getting sicker but keeps blaming his heart, his sugar, old age.... anything but the gluten. So a word of caution. Even if the dapsone makes you feel better you still have to be gluten free or you will damage your body in other ways.

Hope you are feeling better soon

  6. My first round of "can't digest anything" was during my divorce. I dropped from 140lbs to under 100lbs. The second round and my diagnosis of celiacs was when my 17yr old son was jailed and diagnosed as bi-polar. I swelled up like I was wearing a life jacket and had horrible D from dairy and soy and couldn't pass anything else at all. So for me it was triggers.

  7. Yep, Jestgar is right. I meant cross contamination. I had been eating nuts that were processed on shared equipment but had mistakenly gone unlabeled. Since then I've tried bringing some of the gluten free treats into my diet and have found that I'm not tolerating flours and grains yet. I'm better when I stick to meats, eggs, fruits, veggies, olive oil, coconut oil.

  8. Wow, I hadn't realized this issue was so hotly contested. I stopped buying meat at the big chain grocery store because the butcher was cheaper and willing to answer my questions. I found that there is dairy or soy in all the lunch meats carried at either store so I gave up and started eating peanut butter on apple slices for lunch. Even the rotisserie chicken that I use to buy for supper when I had to work late had soy in it. And I haven't found a broth yet that doesn't have something from the celery and carrots family.

The next time I'm in to the butchers I will be asking if the staff have a breakroom separate from the meat processing kitchen, about wooden cutting boards and about precautions taken to avoid cross contamination from the stuffed poultry they make for holidays.

Thanks for the lively conversation. We learn more when we respectfully question ourselves and each other.

  9. My 18 yr old son is also taking this whole thing oddly. Last year he was having serious mental health issues and went through a lot of medications and a hospital stay before he found a medication that worked for him in January'09. In the paper that comes with each refill, it says that this medicine blocks the brains reception of serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, histimine and glutamate.

His blood test for celiacs came back negative (because he was on the medication?). I've asked him to try being gluten free anyway but he says he would rather just take the meds. He is paying more attention though and has said that even with the meds if he over does the gluteny foods like cheerios he has to take imodium. So now he's a Rice Chex fan.

I have spoken to him about the long term effects on his health but he is feeling better now than he has in 4 yrs so it's just not sinking in.

  10. Have you tried going dairy and soy free? I read somewhere that some people don't even realize that gluten is slowing down their motility because dairy and soy speed it up. I remembered that because dairy and soy give me D and gluten gives me C.

    Hope you feel better soon

  11. It was worth it for me. I had always considered carrots as one of my safe foods. I reacted to celery in the food allergy testing. And using the elimination diet, I found that I am reacting to that whole plant family. It would have taken me a long time to figure that out on my own.

Also when I suddenly became unable to digest dairy I tried replacing dairy with soy but I was still very ill. I didn't know if I was mistaken about the dairy or if something else altogether was going on. The allergy test showed that I was allergic to both dairy protein and soy.

and sweet potatoes ....and wheat.....and brewers yeast.... and after removing all of those items from my diet I was still reacting to barley malt with all those now familiar celiac - gluten responses ........ which led to my diagnosis.

  12. Go low carb. It works. It's gluten free. I never had the patience to figure out my threshold (how many carbs I can eat and still lose weight). I just ate about 10 carbs a day. After the first two days the lbs start coming off pretty quickly. The carb cravings are pretty intense for a couple days then they go away.

When I did the best on this I was using sugar free jello and sugar free kool-aid as carb free flavor but since going gluten free the sugar free stuff gives me headaches. Also I was using american cheese slices and mayo as low carb ways to make the meats less boring but my celiacs made me suddenly dairy and soy allergic and I never could tolerate much vinegar so..... I'd have to go with just meat, low carb veggies, berries and water. It would be hard to stick with for very long.

Maybe I'll give it a shot anyhow. <_<

  13. Hope your baby is feeling better soon.......I just wanted to second the tart cherry juice suggestion. It has a mild aspirin effect. Reduces pain and swelling. I sweeten it with real maple syrup. The syrup aids digestion and has zinc, magnesium and a couple other things in it that help the immune system. I like it best really warm.

You don't want to over do it though, to much might make the D worse.

    Hope this helps
