  1. I'm finding that I have to call ahead to make sure that the first of your expectations (that they know what celiacs is) is met before going in. I found that the staff at my local emergency room don't know, don't care, and are to arrogant to listen. The emergency room dr told my bipolar and very likely celiac (at that time) 17yr old son that "meds are not...
  2. OK first, a lot of us went through a good pitty party at first. It's part of the process. Give yourself a break on that. Second, no way could I or a lot of the others on this site be veggies. Many of us have low blood sugar. We need our protein. Beyond that, at some point you will find that you have matured and forgiven your parents for being real...
  3. Hi, Just wanted to say I didn't read for the Jerry Springer/train wreck trill. I'm still trying to learn and haven't made it past the corn chips yet but hope to make it to a safe glass of wine or pink drink on a date night. Your story is a good warning to me as I never could drink more than three drinks in an evening. Maybe now even one would make it...
  4. Hmmm, given the more severe reaction a person has to gluten after it is taken out of the diet, your question is reasonable. It is also mute. Why worry yourself to death over something you can not control? The best you can do is the best you can do.
  5. Not sure if this is the same or not but both my co-worker and I get pressure on the bladder from swollen constipated intestines when we get glutened. More trips to the bathroom but not higher volume.
  6. Maybe you need to draw a line in the sand. Make it clear to yourself and to your husband what you are and are not comfortable doing. Maybe you will provide gluten free meals in the house but what he puts in his mouth outside of the house is on him. You will not order for him or cut up his meat and spoon feed him. If you are actually enjoying learning...
  7. ........that marshmellows are gluten free ........that corn is hard to digest ........that dollar store allergy pills (from China?) could have anything in them
  8. Are you sure your cold meds are gluten free? My pharmacist (he is well informed about celiacs) suggested I switch to the liquids that are made for children. It worked. Also, are you using gluten free flours? I found that my system will not tolerate gluten free flours yet. I don't itch but I don't go either and then I have to deal with all the side effects...
  9. Hi, I'm so sorry you are feeling frustrated and upset by your experience with the dr. I'm just wondering what you had hoped for from this dr. Maybe defining your expectations with us will help you be calm during your next incounter with the medical world.
  10. Glad you are feeling better! Please remeber that many of us felt great for a little while then had a bit of a relapse. If this happens to you don't worry it gets better again pretty quickly. Take Care
  11. I tried the Honey Nut one. To much corn for me. Today was the first day since then that I was able to go "all by myself, like a big girl" Love the Rice Chex, much easier to digest. I'm taking emzymes though and hope to work my way up to a whole bowl of something corney
  12. I was diagnosed with wheat and brewers yeast allergy intially. No allergy to barley, rye or oats. After taking the wheat (I don't drink beer so..) out of my diet I started reacting strongly to oatmeal. I got DH on my knees and elbows and horrible C. That's how we found my celiacs.
  13. Just thought I'd throw in a few other things that can make you hungry........ corn syrup artificial sweeteners diet to high in carbs diet to low in protein not enough fluids msg some prescription meds not enough sleep to much sleep lack of exercise to little sunshine This could be a long list! The artificial sweeteners are a big one for me...
  14. First, I'm sorry you are having so many health problem. I hope you will be feeling better soon. Maybe some of the others here who are more knowledgeable about the range of symptoms will have a better answer for you but my advice would be to use the elimination diet to determine any food intolerances you suspect you may be having.
  15. Maybe you could date another celiac? You're probable not going to find him in a bar though. Maybe at a gym or a salad bar? Hmmm, where do celiacs hang out for fun?
  16. My co-worker also uses dapsone. He had hive like sores all over his body at one point, even in his eyes, not just on the lids, on his eyes. He takes his dapsone and eats stuff that would kill me like Rice Crispies. He buys a burger at a fast food joint and takes the bun off and throws it away. He is getting sicker but keeps blaming his heart, his sugar...
  17. My first round of "can't digest anything" was during my divorce. I dropped from 140lbs to under 100lbs. The second round and my diagnosis of celiacs was when my 17yr old son was jailed and diagnosed as bi-polar. I swelled up like I was wearing a life jacket and had horrible D from dairy and soy and couldn't pass anything else at all. So for me it was triggers...
  18. You'll drop the lbs faster if you leave the grains out altogether. Berries, greens, protein, fats (olive oil) are better choices for weight loss.
  19. Yep, Jestgar is right. I meant cross contamination. I had been eating nuts that were processed on shared equipment but had mistakenly gone unlabeled. Since then I've tried bringing some of the gluten free treats into my diet and have found that I'm not tolerating flours and grains yet. I'm better when I stick to meats, eggs, fruits, veggies, olive oil, coconut...
  20. High carb foods make me hungry. Protein every 6 to 8 hours and low carb veggies are how I keep my blood sugar level and get rid of that constantly hungry beast.
  21. Wow, I hadn't realized this issue was so hotly contested. I stopped buying meat at the big chain grocery store because the butcher was cheaper and willing to answer my questions. I found that there is dairy or soy in all the lunch meats carried at either store so I gave up and started eating peanut butter on apple slices for lunch. Even the rotisserie chicken...
  22. The depression may be part of gluten withdrawal. It gets better. Just keep at it. Take care
  23. My 18 yr old son is also taking this whole thing oddly. Last year he was having serious mental health issues and went through a lot of medications and a hospital stay before he found a medication that worked for him in January'09. In the paper that comes with each refill, it says that this medicine blocks the brains reception of serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline...
  24. I got a good glutening from walnuts. I haven't bought nuts since then. I'm gonna wait for Christmas and buy the one still in the shell!
  25. You have chosen a good one! Just reading through the "View New Posts" a couple times a week has provided me with a lot of information. I've been incredibly grateful for that information. I'm not freaking out about every ache and pain because I keep finding answers that work. Take care
