  1. Hey -- So I know of a few Torontonian celiacs....and I have even bought my dogs boots from one of you!!! I'd like to meet some fellow celiacs from my neck of the woods ... or, if there are any of you doing regular get-to-gethers, lemme know! KDawg
  2. Hey ClevelandGuy: Okay -- in November 2008, I felt very sick and discovered that my liver enzymes were elevated. Six months later I had lost 30 pounds, weighing only 90 pounds, and I had a diagnosis from my liver specialist: Celiac Disease (whatever that was - lol). So, I immediately went gluten free AND I took time away from work. My contract was at...
  3. Recipe a coworker found for almond flour chocoloate chip cookies. So easy, even I can make them: 1. In a large bowl, combine almond flour, salt and baking soda. In a medium bowl, combine grapeseed oil, agave and vanilla 2. Stir wet ingredients into the almond flour mixture until thoroughly combined. Fold in chocolate chips and almonds. 3. Spoon...
  4. I'm sorry to hear you are going through such a hard time and encountered such difficulty at the food-bank. When I was a social service worker, I used to run a food bank and when individuals came in with special dietary issues, I would issue a certificate for the local grocery store so that the person could buy groceries in-line with his/her particular needs...
  5. Hey there: I think that most people would advise you that gluten-free skincare products are the thing to do and that advice is likely very sage advice. My story: Diagnosed with psoriasis YEARS before my celiac diagnosis. I had psoriasis all over --- and managed to get rid of it all, except for the stubborn patches on the front of my shins...those...
  6. Hey ClevelandGuy: I also have thyroid issues, being graves disease and hashimoto's. No, I"m not totally clear on how they can both be present?! In any event, shortly after going gluten-free I did enter into a 'thyroid storm' ... but, really, I was due for one. I usually have a thyroid storm once every 10 - 14 months...followed by meds...followed by a...
  7. Hey Georgie -- sorry to hear you spent three days on the couch. That is so very frustrating - i hate missing my life because I've been gluttened. I fear that the fad quality of this diet may lead to grave consequences for celiacs if businesses want to capitalize on the fad diet without understanding the disease. It may be that there will need to be some...
  8. Banfi Pizza Open Original Shared Link is owned by Gino, a celiac. Great corn pasta. mmmmmm. You can go in and order "Gino Pasta" lol Chapmans Specialty foods in North York: Open Original Shared Link Of course, there is wholefoods KDawg
  9. Hey -- I used to get night sweats, prior to going gluten free. But, the sweats were caused by elevated liver enzymes. I was feeling ill...night sweats..found out I had elevated liver enzymes. My liver specialist tested me for all sorts of things and evenutally I was diagnosed with celiac disease. After several months of going gluten free, my liver got healthy...
  10. Hey - recently I have had several co-workers make similar comments to me and a few of them are cutting back on their gluten intake. I have mixed feelings about this -- while I appreciate that this means there is some greater access to gluten free foods, I"m also concerned that the seriousness of celiac disease is lost in translation. Recently I was on...
  11. Hi K-Dawg,

Was just reading your post on osteoporosis and was wondering how it turned out? I'm only 30 and have osteoporosis in the hips and osteopeonia (sp?) in the spine. Have had several bouts of bacterial overgrowth resulting in a lot of lost weight (which doesn't help bone loss!). Anyways, if you have any advice on what your Dr.'s are doing with you it would be g...

  12. Yes, you do need to be careful re: crosscontamination. There is a vendor (or maybe 2) at St. Lawerence Market (downtown) who sells certified gluten-free chocolate (basement level). I also think that aero is a no gluten added bar, but I"m not postive so check first. Also, re: chocolate and celiacs: Sometime there is added flavouring (e.g. malt flavouring...
  13. OP - Uniliver will list a gluten containing grain. Also, see their website. They have a list of no gluten added products -- you can refer to it for your question re: body lotions, shampoos, etc
  14. OP - if you PM me and send me your email address, I will send you my gluten-free information (if you don't mind me contacting you by email). I am in Toronto, diagnosed a year ago and have collected product listings from various canadian sources; thus, they are somewhat current.
  15. Hey fellow Canadians: I live in Toronto, Ontario and need to travel to Winkler Manitoba in the next couple of days for my step-father's funeral. Does anyone from Winkler know of a safe place to eat? I've got a motel room with a kitchenette so I can buy and prepare some foods also (but a safe restaurant would be ideal). Thanks much! K
  16. is not having much luck with her profile pic :(

  17. Shout out from Toronto Ontaro! Welcome to the board. K-Dawg
  18. Yep, ice burg lettuce is pretty hard to use as a wrap. Like Missy's mom I also use red leaf lettuce or romaine as these types are more flexible. With respect of the bloating you are still experiencing, I think (and this is just my opinion) that you need more time to heal. In the beginning there is just so much damage that, perhaps, it is difficult to...
  19. hey Are you able to eat lettuce? You could always use lettuce as a wrap instead of corn wraps. I do that often. You can use lettuce in place of bread.
  20. Hey Sure thing! The recipe has been posted on the forum and below you will find a link for the discussion thread. I can't seem to find my saved word doc (very frustrating). https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...hl=granola+bars Hope this works! I'm down with the worst cold in the universe so I"m hoping I don't need to type out the...
  21. hey JoAnn: Well, I'm still a work in progress...every so often I want to slip back in to old habits (e.g. taking on too much). But I don't. And I never will. I remind myself that I feel good because I have scaled back and that my health is precarious (I mean, I still have bad days). I'll never take my health for granted again. Like you, I was a...
  22. I also buy and eat some mainstream products that are not produced in a gluten-free facility. I usually call the company to inquire if the lines are cleaned after production of a gluten product. I also use my common sense. For example, there is a brand name chicken burger I'd love to try but ALL their other products are breaded and I doubt the line can be...
  23. PS. I also found one book in particular to be very helpful. It contains meal plans and a discussion on lactose intollerance that may be helpful. Also has lots of other goodies. Honestly, the best book I came across. Gluten Free Diet: A comprehensive Guide by Shelley Case
  24. hey Sandi: Wow -- sounds like we have a lot of issues in common. I can't eat rice at all. I do get the symptoms you described as well as a rash. I was tested and have an allergy to rice (as well as apples and peaches). I find that I also can't eat too much corn, but I can it in moderation. First, have you considered a digestive enzyme? This has...
  25. hey there: I get where you are coming from completely. I also have serveral AI issues and a demanding career. When things got really rough I decided to prioritize my health. I took some time off....rebuilt my strength and energy. Took some control back. After a few months I started to feel healthier and I made some changes, permanent ones. I scaled...
