ARCHIVED What Is Polenta & What Do I Do With It?
K-Dawg posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ok. So I"m grocery shopping (a chore I kind of despise since being diagnosed with celiac disease) and I see this yellow tube. A closer inspection reveals it to be something called polenta. Obviously I"m completely clueless about polenta. Never seen it before in my life (oh what a sheltered life I must lead). Now that I have it, does anyone have any... -
ARCHIVED New York City - Places To Eat? Buy gluten-free Food?
K-Dawg replied to K-Dawg's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Oh my goodness! A big THANK YOU to everyone for all your assistance. I was only diagnosed recently and the idea of travelling was a bit overwhelming but I feel very confident that I"ll be able to eat out AND be able to purchase some great gluten-free groceries. And being a Torontonian addicted to Tim Hortons coffee I'm excited to see there is a Timmies... -
ARCHIVED New York City - Places To Eat? Buy gluten-free Food?
K-Dawg posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hey I'm travelling to New York City in August for a vacation! Could a native new yorker give me some tips on where to eat and where to buy gluten free foods? I appreciate ANY tips! -
mushroom, I'm sorry to hear about what you've gone through. Thank you for sharing. It means we all have to be vigilent. With respect of chatycady's comments, I tend to agree. I have found that recently I"m experiencing some stomach pain and bloating when eating gluten free grains. I had decided, prior to reading her/his post, that I would start to eat...

Thanks Tarnelberry -- this is good information wrt to the type of exercises. I did some light weight lifting today, but I did 30 reps!!!!! I usually do low weight, high reps. I see I need to do this differently. I actually just started taking magnesium yesturday.

Hey -- I sent an email to Blistex saying I lived in Canada (not sure if the products differ in the US) and asked for a gluten free product list. They emailed me a list of products that they state are gluten free (along with the product / formula number). I am copying and pasting it here just in case anyone else is trying to figure out what lip balms are...

I have also upped my D vitamin. Can exercise really rebuild bone? I just figured it made you stronger; thus, less likely to fracture (but I have not researched anything about this) THanks KDAWG

other risk factors, just making things worse: I smoked from the time I was 14 until age 20. I also drink copious amounts of coffee (the jury may still be out on the coffee link, but I"m sure it hasn't helped) So it may be a culmination of many factors.

Hey -- your story hit close to home. I'm 33 years old. REcently diagnosed. I have some bone pain so my doctor had me go in for a bone density scan. I'm awaiting the results. I have no insight to provide beyond what my doctor indicated: The loss of bone density is related to untreated celiac disease. So, this means that the damage was being done prior...

K-Dawg replied to Gerri's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hey Jillian: Welcome to the board!! I live in toronto, but I"ve spent lots of time in the Peg as my mother lived there. She recently moved to a middle of nowhere place (lol) called Roseisle. Hope you find this board helpful! -
ARCHIVED Campbell's - Canadian Products With No Added Gluten
K-Dawg replied to K-Dawg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yes, the lists are completely different. During my first month of living gluten free I relied on US lists. That was one of my many newbie mistakes. -
ARCHIVED Campbell's - Canadian Products With No Added Gluten
K-Dawg posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I contacted Campbells last week and this week I received a list of "Canadian Products with no Added Gluten" and thought I"d share the list. Sorry if this is known information...I"m hoping there are other newbies like me on the forum that can benefit from this info. The list includes soups, V8 Beverages, Prego Sauces and Pace Salsa They state in their... -

I"m sorry to hear that happened to you. How awful. I think I would also have a panic attack. At least you know what it is now and I really hope you get your money back. What a terrible thing to happen. -
ARCHIVED Supposedly Gluten-free Spices
K-Dawg replied to kdonov2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hey, I use McCormicks as well. I like to make a vegetable broth and everytime I make it I get sick and it makes no sense becasue I"m not using anything that contains gluten. The ONLY thing I am using that I don't commonly use is McC's Tumeric. I"m starting to think it is the culprit. Now, it may be that it has been contaminated as we've had it... -

K-Dawg replied to Seamuskitty's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hey there: I was nervous about my endoscopy (had it in April) and I just wanted to tell you that it was such a breeze. Like taking a walk in the park, honestly. Look forward to the update! -

ARCHIVED Stupid ?/products
K-Dawg replied to ME AND ME's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hey, okay, so I was just recently diagnosed myself and asked the same question. I will relay to you what I was advised with the caveat that I"m still very new to this (diagnosed just over 2 months ago). I was advised that it is important not to ingest gluten -- so if you have lip balm, for example, make sure it is gluten free. Same goes for shampoos... -

ARCHIVED Any Celiac(s) From Canada
K-Dawg replied to Gerri's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Shout out from Toronto. Hey everyone. Still consider myself newly diagnosed (end of April 2009). I've recently noticed that my neighbourhood Metro has created an organics section in every aisle where I can find gluten free food -- makes things easier for sure. I'm on the look out for a corn tortilla (allergic to rice). Any suggestions? Sent... -
I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease (April 2009). FOr teh past 8 years I"ve had a terrible itchy rash on my shins....derm's thought it was psoriasis. It just wouldn't go away. Since going totally gluten free it is almost completely gone! This leads me to believe it is DH. I did not expect that going gluten free would solve the problem as I assumed...

Oh, you're email is perfect and exactly how I feel. FYI -- I just had to have the camera shoved down me throat and not the arse so maybe you'll be lucky that way too (although the arse camera is coming, I'm sure - lol) It's a lot to deal with......ugh. Apparently it gets better..... I do feel better and have gained 25 pounds (a good thing as I had lost...

Hey, yes. I agree with you about keeping copies of medical records. I have records of all tests for the period of November 08 - March 2009 (blood work, x-rays, ultra sounds, etc). After March. ,however, I just got too busy (and was too tired) to keep up on it...and let things slide. Now I"m a bit at a loss and the last few months have been a blur and I"m...

PS. I did not immediately stop eating rice...when I did stop I noticed that the hive-like skin rash I"ve been getting almost daily ceased and I"m not getting headaches.

Hi All: Thanks for all the words of advise and encouragment, everyone. I really needed them. I recently found some corn pasta so that made me happy. And via an internet search, I found a place downtown that sells potato pasta. I have always eaten very well -- and for years I have been cooking my own meals due to other pre-existing food allergies -- but...
