  1. the Jazz Kitchen restaurant in downtown disney - just outside the park was great. It was one of the best meals I ever had - gluten or gluten free. They had a menu marked with items that could be made gluten free and the manager discussed everything with me before my order was given to the chef. A very pleasant experience.
  2. Triumph cards are nice because they are laminated. I used another one and it got torn and tattered from going in and out of my wallet! I really like using them with the Dining Guide.
  3. The Triumph Dining Guide lists gluten free items at chain restaurants. Of course, it is stillour responsibility to check, but it is a place to start. I have dined there twice since receiving my guide. Have also used it at another place I had been avoiding.
  4. Adobo - 2 locations in Chicago - Old Town and Wicker Park - also has gluten free menus and very tasty. No plain broiled, no garnish, etc. Delicious food. Flat Top Grill will also accomodate gluten free diners. They have several locations. This is the typical, choose your own ingredients and have them hot grilled. You put a special marker in your...
  5. I have both the dining cards and the book. They are well worth the $$$$. I have recently dined at Smokey Bones and On the Border in Aurora, IL. Used the book and card in combination. It was great. Enjoyed food that had flavor instead of the plain, dry chicken breast, plain baked potato that I had at a conference luncheon. Showed my son the cards...
  6. I got some very good - laminated cards from Triumph Dining. Think I first saw it on the celiac updates site. They are abut $10 for a set of 5 or 6. Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and American - maybe one more. In English on one side and the other language on the other. There is also a Triumph Dining Guide with restaurants arranged by states and then...
  7. The concept that gluten intolerance could be outgrown was common for those diagnosed before 1954 or 56 - I forget the correct date for when the connection was discovered. I was diagnosed in 1947, but my parents were told that I would outgrow it. I was one of those kids on the "banana diet". My older cousins remember my having a mashed up banana in an ice...
  8. I read another thread that questioned the connection between mono and celiac disease. I'm also wondering about celiac and menstrual/gynecological connections. Although I am well past menstruating, I remember the horrible cramps. I also had endometriosis (twice) and fibroid tumors.
  9. I have been seeing gluten free products in the more mainstream groceries here in Illinois. Cub Foods and Meijers have a small selection and I even saw products advertised in the Jewel Foods (Albertson's) weekly flyer!!!! Again, not every store and not as great a selection as the specialty stores, but hopefully that will mean that prices will start coming...
  10. I agree that it is genetic and triggered. I was diagnosed with celiac as a toddler in the late 40's. My parents were told I would outgrow it. The connection to gluten was not made until the 50's, by which time I seemed "normal." However, I have always had a "sensitive" stomach and really did not like bread, pizza, pasta.... would eat small amounts but...
  11. There is a restaurant in Downtown Disney - I think it is the Jazz Kitchen. It is Cajun & Creole food - they have a menu with the items that can be prepared gluten free. I had one of the best meals ever there and did not get sick. They were very good about everything. Have fun
  12. There is a great store in North Aurora on butterfield Road just east of Route 31. Special Order Market has it's own bakery on premises and has a website - specialordermarket.com You can see what they have in stock as well as stop in to see what has been baked. You can place an order through e-mail and just pick it up. They are great.
  13. There is a Carraba's on Collins Avenue about 4 blocks from the Fontainebleau Resort. They are an affiliate of Outback and have a gluten free menu. I was there at the beginning of June with a group from work and they liked it so much we went a second time. In fact, we got there before six one evening and ordered drinks. The server brought six mojitos instead...
  14. RE Vietnamese restaurants. I found one in Chicago's Loop that will marinate meat in "fish sauce" instead of soy sauce for me. Very tasty and with rice noodles. Also the Pho - noodle soups are usually made with rice noodels and the meats are not marinated. Of course you'll have to check but I've had really good luck with the owner. The spring rolls are...
  15. I was diagnosed - not sure how - in about 1947 - when I was about 18 months old. And I was on the banana diet! I don't remember it, just was told that I had a mashed banana in an ice cream cone - yeah, I know I shouldn't have had the cone, but my mom was told to avoid fat. My parents weren't told about gluten and they were also told I would outgrow it...

  17. Just returned from a week trip to San Antonio & Corpus Christi, Texas. Checked the internet for suggestions on restaurants from Celiacs in those places. Ate at a fabulous Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. Also ate at chains where I know they have gluten-free menus - Outback, P. F. Chang. In other restaurants I selected a few entrees that sounded...
  18. I'll be in Corpus Christi and San Antonio in March. Looking for restaurant recommendations. Have found a PF Chang's in San Antonio and know how to order plain grilled foods. However, half the fun of traveling is eating local cuisine. Any suggestions for places that can accomodate gluten-free. Like spicy foods and seafood. Can recommend several good...
  19. I never liked bread, pasta or pizza that much - so I really don't miss them that much. What I really miss is being able to bake cookies and biscuits. I used to go through 20 lbs. of flour between Thanksgiving and New Year's! I didn't eat that much of it - gave most of it away. This is my first holiday season since being diagnosed and I didn't trust...
  20. P F. Chang's is another good restaurant in Chicago. I have also been happy with the choices in Thai restaurants. They have rice noodles and you can ask for meat, shrimp marinated in fish sauce instead of soy sauce. There is also a very good Vietnamese restuarant in downtown Chicago - To Pho on Wabash will prepare gluten-free meals. Again, ask them to...
  21. Having just been gluten free since March 04. Am still confused about vinegars. I know balsamic and wine vinegars, as well as cider vinegar is okay. But I'm confused about distilled vinegar. I read some where that it is ditilled from grain. But sometimes I see distilled vinegar on a product that is supposed to be gluten-free. What's the story?
  22. I was diagnosed with celiac as an infant - back in the late '40s. My parents were told that I would grow out of it. As I understand it, the connection to gluten wasn't really made until the 50's. As a child I don't remember having any problems. Nor did I have any as a teenager, young adult or until recently. It seems as if it was in remission for 50...
  23. I will be attending a conference in Anaheim in early November. Does anyone have suggestions for restaurants?
