  1. I wasn't born in June, but I was supposed to be! I don't think that counts, though. My two boys were born in May and July, and their celiac disease showed up before age 2. --Sarah
  2. I had morning sickness (constant queasiness, but no vomiting--I hate it so much that I have gotten very good at controlling it mentally, I think!) from about the six-week mark until the end of the fourth month with both of my pregnancies. Then it subsided and I felt fine. But I have to say, my morning sickness and my motion sickness problem REALLY synergized...
  3. I, likewise, still looked about four months pregnant even after 9 months gluten-free. Eating anything triggered major bloating. I decided to take a supplement called SeaCure (pure hydrolyzed whitefish protein, gluten-free per manufacturer) for one month, and now the only time I bloat is for a few days after a gluten "accident." SeaCure was developed as...
  4. I just had a nasty reaction to Arrowhead Mills soy flour. I opened a new bag yesterday, and it was the only suspicious food I ate all day. I know they DON'T use separate lines for their gluten-free flours. I am really MAD about this--especially since I am sensitive to eggs and have found that soy flour really improves the quality of egg-free gluten-free...
  5. WOW, what a timely thread! I am in the middle of dealing with a major "accident" this morning, and I am about 90% sure that barley was the culprit that cross-contaminated my freshly-purchased bag of soy flour. When I realized that I have celiac disease, I was virtually wheat-free already for the sake of my breastfeeding baby, so all of my reactions were...
  6. I definitely get migraines immediately after a wheat gluten accident--often before I have finished the cross-contaminated meal. It wasn't noticeably this way before I went gluten-free, but now I can most definitely link my migraines to gluten accidents. I also get mood swings setting in about three days later. It's odd, though--I am about 90% sure that...
  7. JEN, Does anyone else in your house eat gluten? If so, does that peanut butter jar belong to YOU ONLY? If some regular bread crumbs happen to have gotten into the jar, that would cause you to react. Peanut butter, butter, jelly, mustard, mayonnaise...these are prime suspects for cross-contamination if there are gluten-eaters in the house. Just a thought...
  8. Lisa, I am gluten intolerant, as are my two children. My father also shows symptoms, but he won't even consider getting tested because he would have to give up all of his favorite foods. I think my mother should be tested as well, although she does not show classic celiac disease symptoms; it's just a gut feeling I have that she may have it, too. I...
  9. For anyone considering supplementing vitamin B-12 orally, I have read that methylcobalamin is a better choice than the ubiquitous cyanocobalamin because it is in an already assimilable form. Cyanocobalamin, on the other hand, requires sufficient intrinsic factor to convert it into its active form, and many people have low levels of this substance.
  10. Thanks for the tip!
  11. I haven't personally, but I do notice some itchiness "downstairs" after a gluten accident that makes me wonder if I might get a bit yeasty at those times. I can't remember whether yeast infections are usually accompanied by a strong odor or not, but you might want to check with your gynecologist to see whether you have an infection of one sort or another...
  12. Heather, It's hard to say about the reflux. My friend (who should be writing to you soon--I gave her your e-mail address) has a 10-week-old with pretty serious reflux, and she has cut just about everything out of her diet and is not yet seeing any improvement in his condition. My boys had milder reflux that cleared up when I eliminated dairy (I didn...
  13. Paula, If I am remembering 7th-grade science correctly, here are the theoretical odds: Parent 1: TWO copies \ ------> 100% chance of inheriting TWO copies Parent 2: TWO copies / Parent 1: TWO copies \ ------> 50% chance of inheriting TWO copies Parent 2: ONE copy.... / ------> 50% chance of inheriting ONE copy Parent 1: ONE copy...
  14. hapi2bgf, Americans generally get enough omega-6s in their diets, but omega-3s are found almost exclusively in fish and flaxseeds. Maybe you could take a supplement; I know there are several brands available, and it might not be a bad idea anyway since we celiacs often have trouble absorbing fats and probably need to take in larger amounts of them. ...
  15. Steve, On the Enterolab website, it says that there may be a connection between Crohn's disease and yeast sensitivity. It might be worth investigating!
  16. I haven't found one. My son reacted to Rice Dream "ice cream" (which I read somewhere does NOT use a barley enzyme in the processing), and I have been reluctant to try others. If you find one, please let me know!
  17. Kelly, I am SOOOO jealous that your mother is willing to run "gluten-free bootcamp" for your kids! My parents would probably try to keep my kids gluten-free during a visit (although I suspect they would insist that "a little bit won't hurt") but my in-laws are convinced that the only health problem my kids have is MY "hypochondria"! Since my kids are...
  18. Kelly, I seem to remember reading that if you have dermatitis herpetiformis, iodine will trigger a flare-up of the rash. Have you heard this?
  19. HEATHER!!!!! Oh, my heavens!!! This is the last thing you needed right now! I just called my friend who has experienced pancreatitis firsthand and asked for some advice to pass along to you. Here's what she said: 1.) Ask if the doctor checked your lipase levels in addition to your amylase levels. If not, request it. 2.) Eat NO fat AT ALL...
  20. snapturtle, I used to be the same way, although I always just assumed I was really small and tense inside. Then I was bulldozed by a nine-pound baby, and suddenly sex became surprisingly enjoyable! If I had it to do over again, though, I would investigate the cause of the pain. I seem to remember someone on this board (maybe tarnalberry?) mentioning...
  21. Ouch! I remember something similar happening to me last year as soon as the weather turned cold (before I went gluten-free). It cleared up for me after I went gluten-free. The same thing had happened a year earlier, at which time I increased my intake of essential fatty acids with good results. How is your intake of essential fatty acids? Both omega...
  22. Kerri, I have a friend who I strongly suspect is gluten intolerant, although she is not (yet?) ready to find out for sure. She had multiple miscarriages but DID finally successfully carry an infant all the way to term! One thing she noticed was that she tended to conceive while she was either fasting for medical reasons or voluntarily on a CRON (calorie...
  23. Leigh Ann, Another point to keep in mind is that undiagnosed celiac disease might just have been responsible for your GERD! It IS possible that you may be able to reintroduce some of the foods that give you trouble now at some future point when you have the celiac disease under control. As far as food goes, I make lots of stews and other one-pot meals...
  24. travelthomas, Thanks for doing the research! I really doubt that any studies have addressed protein secretion into any bodily fluids other than breast milk, although it would be a fascinating research topic. I can speak from personal experience that food proteins definitely DO transfer to breast milk, although I speculate that if a mother's gut were...
  25. Kel, When doctors say you're not "allergic" to wheat, they mean that you do not have an IgE-mediated reaction to it (like hives or anaphylaxis). However, celiac disease is mediated by IgA and IgG, NOT IgE. If you make anti-gliadin IgA and/or IgG antibodies, you MUST avoid gluten in all its forms to remain healthy, even though you are not classically...
