  1. Hi, guys. It's Donna again. I started this post in a fit of frustration one day. I must admit that I have truly enjoyed the bantering back and forth on the topic. While I am not always feeling well enough to answer, I have checked in regularly. I had a much better Christmas this year. I suppose after seeing what can happen with one meal that is cross...
  2. Thanks for the input, guys. I was just really frustrated when I wrote the post earlier. You all have said what I knew but did not want to deal with. And, yes, my daughter is in denial. You would think she would catch on with my status being as bad as it is. Maybe this last time she finally has caught on. At least she is commenting about how frustrating and...
  3. Boy do I understnad your problem!!!!! My daughter was 11 when she was diagnosed. It was a major battle. My gut tells me you may have multiple things going on with your daughter. She may be going through that initial stage when your body is adjusting to the new diet and trying to figure out what is happening. My daughter and I both went through a period of...
  4. Every time I accidentally get into come gluten, I go through a period of time when my hair comes out in wads. The year prior to my diagnosis, my mother (a hairdresser by trade) got quite frustrated because my hair would not hold a perm and was straiter on one side than the other. Every time she tried to work with it (I was almost paralyzed on the left side...
  5. I can almost guarantee when my 13 yr old daughter has gotten into something while out with her friends. She bloats up, becomes irritable, wets the bed again, and can't breathe. Then comes the itching and a breakout. The really bad thing is that some extended family members don't even believe in celiac so when she is at their house they won't even attempt...
  6. There are three of us in my household with asthma...a couple of us really badly. Once on the gluten-free diet, it took several months, but the asthma is stable and rarely rears its ugly head anymore. I can almost guarantee when my 13 yr old daughter has gotten into something while out with her friends. She bloats up, becomes irritable, wets the bed again...
  7. Well, here I am at 4am writing this post. Once again I am so tired I can hardly function, but neither can I sleep. My legs won't stay still and my mind won't slow down. Every little noise drives me nuts. At least my husband doesn't snore anymore since he has one of those machines for his sleep apnea. We are back in the same bed again...this time a king size...
  8. This sounds awful, but it isn't once you get used to it. Have any of you tried magnesium sulfate injections for the leg pain. I use them mixed with lidocaine in an insulin needle then place lidoderm patches over the worst pain spots around my knees and the sides of my hips. Sometimes it is the only way to get the muscle spasms and pain to stop. The endocrinologist...
  9. It's Donna again. I just had to take a few minutes and get my brain and fingers in order. I was fully disabled at age 40 with all the complications that the endocrinologists, the internists, the rheumatologist, and the gastro doc could not figure out before my 11 year old daughter became so ill she missed a month of school. She was the youngest fibromyalgia...
  10. It is my understanding that the white flecks occur as a result of a specific vitamin deficiency...I am just in a brain fog right now and can't remember which one. Sorry, but tonight is one of those nights when I am so tired I can't think but I also can't sleep. Apparently I can't type either because I had to try that last sentence three times before I got...
  11. I have a love/hate relationship with these postings. It is so good to hear that I am not alone, but sharing all the symptoms can sound like a pity party. It took me several months of strict adherence to finally get rid of all the sad feelings and diarrhea, but I began to see the changes after about 3-4 weeks. It also took me a while to figure out all...
  12. The food combining concerns can be personal or religious, but they have worked for several folks I have talked with. Once diagnosed with celiac disease/DH, I had to spend several months on simple vegetables and grilled meats. For the first time in decades I had to eat white rice instead of brown or wild. As I gradually added things back into my diet, I found...
  13. The good news is that my neurologist says that our neuropathy will get better over time. My is so bad that I am permanently disabled. I'd just like to get out of this wheelchair and walk even if I can't go back to work. One lunch out set my neurological problems back the whole 2 yrs worth of getting better. Yuck. The pain is a whole other story. I have...
  14. I am so sensitive that I have to be a cross-contamination freak. I have called the regional or national offices of several restaurants over the last year and a half. Some of my comments were negative, but I go amazing responses from the positive comments. They were almost funny...as though they could not believe that someone would actually call to tell them...
  15. Perrigo Labs makes their OTC meds in a gluten-free facility. They supply all of Kroger's OTC store brands and many of those at Wal-mart and Target. Look for the logo on the bottle that looks like a rounded edged rectangle with a comma thing hanging off the right side. I call them every few months to reverify that they are still gluten-free and I just called...
  16. I too am yearning for a good cereal. I miss my frosted mini wheats! On our limited budget, I cannot afford to feed a family of five (with 3 on the gluten-free diet, we keep a gluten-free kitchen) with the expensive versions. At least the others can periodically have some of Kroger brand's corn pops. I can't since some of the newer research may be indicating...
  17. If you are using an OTC version, go to your local Kroger and get their generic version manufactured by Perrigo (in a gluten-free facility). The Perrigo logo looks like a rounded edged rectangle with a comma thing hanging off the right side. You may also find this manufacturer's stuff at Wal-mart or Target, but you have to look for the logo since not all their...
  18. When I called about Hall's, the same company makes Luden's and they are gluten-free. Donna
  19. Because I have numerous long term problems triggered by an undiagnosed celiac, I am on many medicatons. If you talk with your doctor and pharmacist, they should be able to determine whether a med is gluten-free. My doctors will usually check the PDF for the name brand then either the pharmacist or I will contact the manufacturer to verify. If the product...
  20. You can buy the baking flour in bulk from Bob's Red Mill and then add the yeast, xanthan gum, etc. It is a little more difficult, but significantly cheaper than buying the individual bread bags. If you like the individual bags, Kroger carries them in their specialty department. If your local Kroger does not carry them, ask them to special order. They can...
  21. I have used our local Longhorn's (Hiram) as much as the budget will allow. One of the managers there had a friend who was a celiac patient and he was so careful that he caught the salad before it hit my table...the waitress had forgotten about the croutons. He even explained to her that she could not just remove the croutons and bring the bowl back. Would...
  22. This was great information. Thanks so much for the education and for listening to us as well. Donna
  23. I have found that most people want to help if you ask, but you need to make sure that they understand that plain means plain on the meat, etc. I ran into a problem with a gluten-free meal at our last church Christmas dinner. They had really tried, but all four of us who have celiac disease were sick afterwards. We think it was probably the garlic powder on...
  24. I live out in South Paulding, but used to work just south of the Big Chicken before becoming disabled. Unfortunately, I am old enough to remember the old sign...when it was the only fast food restaurant around. Because of my disability, getting to either Life (which I used for years) or Whole Foods is just not feasible. I have found that a good mixer and...
  25. DON'T!!!!! My parents were in town in August and insisted on taking us to Olive Garden. It took seven and a half weeks and two hospital stays to get the symptoms under control. The waiter, chef, and manager were very nice and appeared very helpful but I knew within minutes there was a problem. Donna
