  1. Happy birthday and may God bless you today!

  2. Just checking in on you. When I get glutened, even slightly, the first places that will itch are in my scalp and around my ears. Then my face, neck, and down my arms and legs. It starts at the top and marches downward!
  3. From cdford: My neurological problems were so bad prior to my diagnosis that I was bedbound and unable to even feed myself or go to the bathroom without assistance. After being gluten-free for almost 5 years, I can now use a walker around the house, cook some days, drive on good days, etc. Some of my damage was permanent, but a lot of the absolute...
  4. I still have not found a good source for corn meal (already milled, store bought). I have figured out that I can create an acceptable alternative by milling corn in my flour mill. I set it on the most course setting. The resulting flour requires a little extra baking powder, but is otherwise quite usable. Thought any of you watching might want to have...
  5. DH is always a possibility, but having been camping it could also be poison ivy/oak. They look and feel similar if you have not ever had them at the same time.
  6. Probably not the Nexium. I have taken it and am super-sensitive.
  7. Glad y'all don't have a problem with TT, but I sure do. I was using Northern for a while and could not figure out why "those places" stayed raw and itchy. Saw the notice on Clan Thompson's site and changed brands. No more problems after the initial stuff healed.
  8. Oh yeah, guys...I live in a small town and we don't have options outside the standard Winn Dixie, Harvey's, or Wal-mart. Any "gluten free" specialty foods would have to be mail ordered at significantly higher cost.
  9. I just found out that Dixie Lily is in bankruptcy. That means no more DL or Arnett Mills products will be available. Their products (grits, corn meal, etc.) have been removed from all our local stores. They were the only company I knew of that had "corn only" facilities. I am almost out of corn meal and can't function without cornbread in south Georgia. ...
  10. Here is the response I recieved from IAMs when I querried them about gluten status of their foods. Hope it helps. From: Iams Customer Service <Customer.Service@Iams.Com> To: "'cdford@integrity.com'" <cdford@integrity.com> Subject: A message from Danette @ Iams 1-1886900757 Dear Donna: Thank you for taking the time to write. I...
  11. $3.00 s/h??? I placed two orders from different companies this last week and the s/h totaled more than $40!
  12. For those of you who are active, you might want to consider whether your partner has showered since coming into contact wtih gluten. My spouse worked at a pizza place for several years and we finally realized that he had to shower prior to being with me or he shared that wheat dust that had transferred from his clothes or hands got onto my private areas and...
  13. The docs were so sure I had MS that they did MRIs regularly for six years just waiting for the scales to show up. Turns out that, like many celiacs, my nerves had been affected. The neurological damage from celiac disease mimics MS closely. The good news is that it gets better the longer you are gluten-free. In my case the damage was so bad that I will probably...
  14. last I checked, Metamucil was gluten-free. There are also several generic versions that are gluten-free. You are new at this, so my best advice is to make sure you check with the manufacturer on everything. If you are on other meds, talk to your pharmacist and have them make a note on your file to verify every time they fill an order. Most are pretty good...
  15. This stuff is sooo expensive. Does anyone know of a company that makes a gluten-free generic ppi?
  16. Something that most people do not think about is your sleep habits. Research has shown that those of us who do not sleep well are more likely to gain weight. I am working on this aspect of my life right now since I am not losing weight even though I am exercising regularly in the pool or hot tub and being careful about my diet. I can feel the muscle getting...
  17. There are good reasons to use each. We have a larger family and find that milling and mixing our own is MUCH cheaper. We do keep some packaged mixes and pre-mixed flours around for when we travel, when my daughter has to cook on her own quickly, or when my daughter is headed on church trips or to the grandparents, etc. where someone else might have to cook...
  18. I know I did not dream that there was a post discussing eating at Williamson Brothers Barbeque in the Atlanta area, but I cannot find the post using a search. Can someone point me in the right direction or message me with info on what we can eat there? Thanks!
  19. Sorry, but a better diet and exercise does not always do the trick. It is sometimes hard to find meds that we can take or that work for any one individual. I am one of those that the docs are shaking their heads over. Just can't get my cholesterol down no matter what we try. It is that way with my entire family. Apparently there is a genetic component to...
  20. I had seen many, many doctors for a slew of different symptoms over decades. It was not until I was fully disabled with neurological problems and my daughter was finally diagnosed that anyone even thought to check for celiac disease. By that time, much damage was done to multiple systems. I am just glad that I have a chance to get better now. I sure did lose...
  21. For gluten-free doughs, I have never used the dough hook. I have always used the regular beater since our doughs are not as stiff as those using wheat as their base.
  22. I have had my kitchenaid for about three years now and it is still going strong. I use it regularly.
  23. I bought Bette Hagman's books and used them to start out with. If your budget is tight, search this site, especially the message board, for recipes and where to purchase items. As a quick reference, I'll add the following items: For bulk flours already milled, try Bob's Red Mill (can order by the buckets) or Authentic Foods (come in bags). For bulk...
  24. According to how you plan to bake and what your budget is, there are several options. (And if I can get my kitten to stop trying to type for me I'll list them.) 1- A heavy duty stand mixer is a must no matter what you do. It is required for most baking processes and certainly if you plan to bake in the oven instead of a bread machine. 2- A good quality...
  25. Processed foods are going to be your main source for fructose unless you have been using it as a white sugar substitute. If so, try using sucanat with honey instead. It works even better and is almost a one for one substitute for white sugar without the nasty long term issues of white sugar. Breadbeckers is a good source for this. You can also use plain...
