  1. Most dieticians are not well versed in celiac disease and the gluten-free diet. They may be concerned that they will give poor advice and get you into trouble and are not willing to take the appropriate amount of time to do the research when they can be earning money on someone with far less medical ramifications if they make a mistake. As big as they...
  2. I had to go out on disability because we did not know the root of my problem at that time. It was a hard road because I was the primary breadwinner at the time due to my education level and field of expertise. I simply could go no further. I had to have my husband drive 45 minutes each way twice a day to get me to work and even then I could hardly do what...
  3. Walmart in Georgia carries Progresso soups for $1.50 per can. That is a significant savings over the grocery stores here.
  4. We use armour around here and have found it works better than any of the others for us.
  5. I called and spoke with customer service. I shared our concerns that foods were disappearing from their shelves the we would normally drive to their specific store to purchase. I also told him that they were known as a store where we could purchase the foods we can safely eat and that they were the only one in our area where we could. The representative assured...
  6. The small town we will be living in (if I can ever get my house ready and sold) only has a Western Sizzlin' Steak house, not a Ryan's or Golden Corral. I contacted them this week for a gluten-free list. Each WS is franchise owned and is allowed to set up their own menu and use their own recipes, so you have to check with each one separately. The contact...
  7. Try doing a search on the site. I am almost certain there was a discussion on this topic a month or so ago. Good luck!
  8. In case you guys have not noticed, they have also stopped carrying Dixie Lily white grits and Herb Ox bulloin cubes. I shared my frustration the last couple of times I called. I have had to start special ordering several items and have not had much luck getting them in.
  9. My husband has been a manager at Domino's for several years. We checked with corporate to be certain the wings were okay. Here is how to do this: When you call in, ask for a manager. Explain that you want to place an order for the wings but have an allergy to wheat. Ask the manager to request that the person handling your order wash their hands just prior...
  10. Isn't speed-dial wonderful?
  11. I checked on these recently and they are gluten-free.

    ARCHIVED Captain D's

I was lamenting just the other day that we could no longer eat at Cap'n D's. We might just try a couple of your suggestions next time we are on the road.
  13. Unless they have changed their formulation in the last few months, Tone's has a dried mushroom that you can add to the starter recipe above. Rehydrated, these are also good for use in other kinds of recipes.
  14. Check the ingredients on any pre-packaged items, but we use their fresh meats all the time and have had no problems. Wal-mart meats contain additives, but Sam's do not usually. It is easy for a family of our size to purchase the larger packages at Sam's and separate them into meal-sized groupings for the freezer. If I had to buy meats from most of the regular...
  15. A friend of ours works at a BWW and wanted to know if he could bring us some food home one day. I was unsure, but I will print this response and share it with him. At least he will now be able to answer questions for their customers when he is asked.
  16. Both of us run low grade fevers with a gluten incident. If it was a major incident, my daughter's temp will jump up into that 104-105 range for a few hours. We are also far more suseptible to getting anything that comes along for the next few weeks. That may also play a role in it.
  17. Act II and Kroger brands are gluten-free. You might want to be extra careful of those with all the extra butter flavors and such as that is generally where you will get additives.
  18. Ms. Ford, most of our products are gluten-free, but our honey glazed hams do contain gluten as there is wheat flour in the honey mix. The products listed below are the only products we make which contain gluten. Honey Glazed Hams (Wheat flour in honey mix) Honey Glaze - Packets Honey Barbecue Flavored Products Precooked Beef Patties, Cheeseburger...
  19. I don't know about the Dove causing a celiac disease response, but I react more to certain Dove products than to others. It is usually a skin (DH) type reaction, though. Are you certain that there is no way you got cross-contaminated in some other way?
  20. I found it!!! Here is the short version of the gluten-free mix I use. 2 cups gluten-free flour (I use B. Hagman's - 2 parts brown rice flour, 2/3 part potato starch, 1/3 part tapioca flour) 1/3 cup ground flax seed 3 Tbs Sugar 2 tsp Xanthan gum 1 tsp salt I also add several tablespoons of bean flour to give it a smoother, more consistent texture...
  21. I would have added my "mix" instructions except that I have already packed them up to move! I went back and did a search of this site to see if I could find my old posts containing them. I could not find the small batch listing. Remember when making biscuits you may have to adjust the amount of rice/bean flours according to your personal tastes or local weather...
  22. Somewhere in that ProActive info was there a real statement on their gluten-free status? I could not get past all the names in the list to read it!
  23. Cranberry-grape juice has that twang that wine carries but without the strong taste of cranberry juice or the alcohol of wine.
  24. I have tried several different brands but without the barley malt (and some of them do not even have salt!), they have no flavor. If someone finds one with real flavor, let me know.
  25. I don't usually have a problem at McD's, but this week was the exception. I don't know why, but we reacted. Hope it is the exception to the rule!
